Yep, $590 is way over the top. Should be about $70-100 max to check codes. I would be asking them for a more specific break down of their labour cost. Having a mechanic who does not know how to check codes does not entitle them to charge you extra time.

On Sunday I drove off the beach at Stockton and the bell went off and the lights on the dash came on. So next week into Coopers to get the fault cleared. Hope it is only sand or dirt. Tried Baz's method and it did not clear it.

Interestly even with the dash lit up ABS works but TC does not.

Try giving underneath a good was with clean high pressure water and then air. Might clear sand.

Well, the extra info arrived as follows:
"11,4 Shuttle valve switch electrical failure
    Diagnostic disc used Archive 24
    Followed fault explorer
    checked connectors C0500, C0501, C0506 - OK
    checked circuits C0506/6 - C0501/9 - OK
    checked circuits C0506/3 - C0501/8 - OK
checked ground circuit C0500/1 - OK
carried out shuttle valve switch test and test failed
No further information in workshop manual or on T4"

This was accompanied by the first page of the Technical Service Bulletin LT206-005V327 dated September 2006 (which by the way is for a DIsc II not Defender).

Still doesn't seem like $590 worth...

Great work Stevo, the pictures in the other thread are a great help. Presumably, the different modulator in the Defender could have the same problem, but for someone with little or no mechnical ability, can I remove the ABS modulator to play with it and drive without it ? Just wondering how to repressurize the brake fluid after tinkering...

no once the modulator is removed you cannot drive it,I amnot sure if you can bleed the modulator without using the testbook or rovacomlite. what is the wabco number on the modulator?? could get on the wabco site and see what the differences are it may just have different solenoid valves inside but everything else is the same, never seen a defender modulator
