Turned out to be the main lead from the battery to the fuse box was dodgy - this was playing hell with the immobiliser/alarm/everything when it kept cutting in and out.

but in this case all the electrics still worked, all the lights still on engine would crank over etc, only thing that didnt come on was glow plug light.

yep sounds like the immobiliser... my D1 does it also on very very hard bumps... they type i really should slow down for

If only I were going fast I would expect these things and except the fact that I was going to fast and maybe slow down, but 80km\h on a bitumen road is just silly

You're certainly not alone, it would seem.
Had the same thing happen to me with a rather LARGE bump up the Cape a few years ago in the Fender. ..
Same deal .. stop, turn off. Then all is well.
