Just for the record, there is not a company out there that makes all its own filters, including Wix. Some of it is due to patents. One of the big differences is, Fleetguard does not pro rate its warranty. I don't know of any other company that can say that.
big bump!
so how do I source a synthetic media oil filter?
Is there a designation on the packaging?
and can someone explain the BPV (back pressure valve?) amounts?

LF3487 is the Z9 equivalent, don't think they do a Z89A/ERR3340 size syn media filter.
It'll say 'Microglass' somewhere on the blurb if it is.
The ADBV is for anti-drain back, the BPV setting is the pressure at which the by-pass valve opens when the pressure differential across the media is too high, eg when the oil is cold (or the filter blocked)
The syn media filters flow a lot more than the paper ones.
I'm currently running an LF3487 on the Tdi.

Ben explained it once or twice before, I'll see if I can find a link.
Basically we (as in not filter engineer people) tend think of a filter as a sieve, but that's not how they work with liquids.
Part of it is that the synthetic medias are much more consistent in their structure than a cellulose type one so are much more open for a given capture, and the way they work explains the rest and I have KRAFT ATM![]()
Naa, the top of the diff does, but an angle grinder fixes that
It's still close though, and some might not be comfortable with the clearance but I've never split a filter in eight years or so, although one or two have shown the tiniest of marks at the base of the filter. (That's with 20-25mm of bump stop compression. I use standard bump stops too)
Remote filter adaptor could be an option too I guess I recon the 89a is just a bit on the small size for a diesel
