    Question Gear box what fits

So as the title states. The old four speed rangie gear box behind my isuzu motor is making some interesting noises. Not often but it has me thinking not all is well with the box of cogs. So starting to think along the line of a 5 speed unit. So the question is what would be a suitable gear box ? Seems to be a few options and me being a land rover newb don`t know them.

In terms of landrover boxes, none really, the 4 speed is the strongest then the R380 5 speed. If money is know problem then you could always get a kit off The Grubb and install the 5 speed isuzu box. Allow $5k to do this, and thats doing it all yourself. This is the best option, but costly and a lot of work, or you could just stick another 4 speed in

r380 or the heavy duty version of the lt85 if you can get one there is a version of the lt85 thats a direct bolt up to the isuzu. I think from memory you have to change the clutch plate though

my money says your better off with the lt95 in the long term in terms of reliability

By memory, Hall's isn't a 4BD1, its the 3.6 or 3.3L Isuzu, so maybe the regular R380 would be tough enough, or the LT85 since it can almost (open to argument of course) cope with the 3.9.

Well thanks for the reply`s so far. The ute has the 4bb1 which is the 3.6 motor. Also has a different bell housing, so any gear box is a custom fit. Would like to reduce the revs when get`n along at or near 100 k`s . If I`m sticking with a four speed I might as well open up the one I have now and renovate it. Have given it a oil change. A small, 1/8 " washer came out with the oil. Now the $ 1.50 question is did the washer come from the gear box or was it inadvertently put inside some how? Taking in to account the gear box being of great age, this is a likely option.

    G'day Hall,
The only washer about that size in the gearbox is the one under the split pin that holds the brass foot on the reverse crossover lever, it is 8mm ID and about 17mm OD. Anything else is foreign. What ratio are you running in the transfer case. In my opinion you are better off sticking with the 4 speed LT95 as it is almost bulletproof and will outlast any of the 5 speeds especially with a TRB intermediate shaft. You should be looking at another 15-20years with a rebuild. Make sure you use good quality bearings on the mainshaft, layshaft and centre diff when you rebuild it.

Find another box from a late rangie 83 84 there abouts will have the .996 to 1 high range and it will then cruise at 100k at around 2000 rpm with a 33 inch tyre and standard 3.54 diffs great set up IMHO

    A list of engines here - [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List"]List - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/Fileisambig_gray.svg" class="image"><img alt="Disambiguation icon" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5f/Disambig_gray.svg/30px-Disambig_gray.svg.png"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/5/5f/Disambig_gray.svg/30px-Disambig_gray.svg.png[/ame] of Isuzu engines

My County has the 4BE1 motor fitted, seems a bit more sporty than the 4BD1 motor as it revs a bit higher, often wonder what a turbo would do to it

The 4BE1 is shorter stroke than the 4BD1. Should be quite a lot smoother and sweeter but I've never driven one. The 4BC2 I drive occasionally (still in the NPR) is a whole heap sweeter at high rpm than my 4BD1T.
