Thread: Our Defender/County 120?

I'm going to acquire a Dana 60 out of a wrecked F Truck. Have found one in the Sydney area but asking price is $2500! I really have little idea how it will all go together as yet Steering, brakes etc. Will be no problem getting it shortened. It has been suggested by a diff builder to modify the F Truck hubs to take the Landy rims? Looks like the 15" rims may have issues with brake caliper clearance if I use the yank set up.

Have just located a F250 Dana 60 front for $1250 If I can get this all in under 3K I'll be happy
It's in Brisbane I'll get some freight quotes on Monday.

I seem to end up with threads everywhere
Have the D60 sitting here, have put it aside for now. Many issues to resolve including the prop shaft uj angle and x member. The tie rod will also be a pain I'll chip away it it latter.
Plan B is use a Patrol 3.545 center+ housing with trussed rover torque tubes and swivels. I'll swap the side gears for 24spline and see how the HTE shafts and Ashcroft AEU 2522 CVs go as already have them. IF they break I'll go the 30 spline and Longfield cvs. Gonna be expensive if this happens
For now I have crudely pegged a stock 3.54 rover centre and just have to go easy on it. No more playing hard.

    Front diff options

I have sorted doing a D60 into the front of the Defender, it involves a lot of modding. I spray weld a patch into the cast iron to clear the rear steering track rod. Replace one tube entirely(heavy duty and longer) You have to have minimum 50mm bump stop increase on drivers front. Also custom radius brackets etc. All fabrication is tig except the spray welding....
It is practically all bolt in mods though. So you can convert vehicle back to stock with spanners...

It is a Sals low pinion though, means your wheel travel can be a little better than stock before you run into UJ clearance issues, Im sorting this with CVs in a custom tailshaft but currently running a stock defender 2 uni tailshaft with 52mm shortened...

PM me if you want more details, i have another housing almost finished.

i have a spare drum brake salisbury now that i will look at using in the front, grafting 80 series swivels/outers on with longfield c.v's down the track and getting a dana center prolly 35spline side gears and can get custom 4340 heat treated axles made for well under $300 a pop, well its just a thought at the moment.....

hey chief, not more thoughts on it yet, and i dont want to think about it until i have crossed many other things off my list first - mainly my rover truggy build (otherwise i'll get excited about it and start another project that will take too long to finish!!), maybe early next year....

Just an update.... I have ditched the Dana/sals front as need wheel travel and need to keep this rig low as possible.

Now building up a Nissan 4.8 auto petrol GU high pinion 3.545 ( very close to 3.54:1 ratio)
into rover torque tubes and swivels with HT shafts using AEU2522 CV's. This is done by changing to 24spine side gears in the Nissan ARB locker.
See how the Rover shafts and CV's survive before I go looking for more strength. I'm only running 35" tyres so should be OK.
Pretty much every thing remains standard this way.

Ashcroft cv joints and it'll be bullet proof
