The first couple should give you a reasonable amount of info on the Td5.

I can add two more things that I have found on mine that were missed in the check (and I don't recall reading here)...

- Check the windscreen wipers. Make sure that the slow and fast cycle come on immediately when selected, even after the intermittent cycle.

Check all hoses for chafing, in particular the PAS hose that does the u turn near the LH front of the sump where it rubs and will eventually break through. Replaceable, but don't forget to add the cost of the PAS fluid...

Thanks for all your great posting people's! I'm looking at purchasing a 2003/4 d2 and due to budget constraints is there a worry about looking at one with over 200,000kms? I would check the service history first obviously.

Would like to know what you all thought?

Hi mate. I bought a 2003 td5 auto with 200k on the clock and fitted it out for a round oz trip. Done 60k since, the cape, the gulf, the kimberley and plenty around Darwin. Been a great machine- except for annoying electrical faults (window motors, latches, ABS system) But that is not to worry about- i like to fiddle and service and fix my own car, an attitude I reckon is kind of essential to own a d2- at least to the extent that you'll pull door trims off and have a look at least. And, credit where it is due, this forum and the people on it are pure gold in terms of helping minor things from becoming major $$$. I don't reckon k's are a major issue, given a good service history of course- I've read on here of heaps of low k's d2a's that've had problems mine hasn't with heaps more k's and probably harder ones too. I would stay away from ECU chips, they breed problems elsewhere. The trim will start to squeak and rattle too after you've done the required k's over corrugations, but most cars will- the squeaks in troopies i've been in were way worse. My one absolute comment is- get a car with a diff lock (03MY on), i reckon pretty imortant if you want to go remote. Hope this helps!

Thanks for that Beanie. I am willing to take off the door trim and have a go at most things. How is your motor going? Using oil anything like that?

Motor is great, smooth and powerful, and simple to maintain if you do it yourself. Doesn't use any noticeable amount of oil- i probably have to top it up 100ml or so every 2000. I think that's reasonable. As I said i would stay away from chips though. By the way, my motor has survived a couple of potential disasters- the first, a near drowning where the air filter was wet. I lost power, and a whitish vapour was coming from the exhaust until I changed the filter for a dry one. The second was a torn air filter (the filter had clogged with bulldust and the engine had sucked it to pieces, letting an unknown amount of dust through), These incidents were 30k ago and absolutely no problem since- that makes them tough in my experience at least.
