thannks for the replies. I am not needing steering wheel controls or anything fancy but YES there will be USB and bluetooth (heck I dont eve erquire CD as I dont own them nor do I intend to )
Its been many years since I installed a head unit. If I got an aftermarket one (say Sony or Kenwood) how is the install done - screws for a bracket into the sides of the console chassis and then slide in player with tags that move out and lock in?
Cheers
Michelle,
If you don't want a CD/DVD player then there are a few that come without and as I indicated before Axis Car Audio (Blauplunkt) do one that comes complete with USB, SD, SDHC and a single pin jack for phones, iphones, ipods etc... one model AX1102BT, just google the model number for distributor details. There are also a lot from overseas on ebay etc... but they seem to be problematic and there are other posts on here that support their inferior quality. The reason I was looking was my current CD player skips on even the slightest vibration so was chasing something without the player but had Bluetooth, and all the current input modes.
Cheers,
Peter.

The chassis for the OEM head unit is essentially held in by metal tabs folded back and a bolt/tail on the back of the unit is guided into a braket further back into teh dahs to hold teh head unit level when installed. My Alpine unit also just had metal fold back chassis to go back in.
Releasing the unit is either a couple of tangs to go into 4 holes (or similar) or just small spring loaded locking mechanisms accessible when the face is off.
Cut up a coat hanger into 4 longish straight bits.
Insert them into the holes either side of the unit, fingers in the tape deck and out it comes.
My aftermarket unit came with a metal frame, which made it too big by a millimetre or two.
Other thing is the rubber insert at the rear which is a PITA to line up, must say I wasn't exactly gentle with mine
Mine has a bit of movement, still need to pad out the sides, as it still goes walkabout on long sections of corrugations
Pretty simple job all up
Let me know if you want pics, I still have some floating around from the install I think.
I got a Jaycar unit (QM3789) that can play DVDs, CDs, reversing camera input, input to rear DVD player, bluetooth (phone only), and plays mp3s. Whilst it has a couple of foibles (eg button labelled source is for on/off only), I now have some 3000 songs on a couple of usb and SD cards in the ash tray. Haven't used a CD since I bought it, so you may want to consider a unit that is MP3 / MP4 only, as these are less prone to mechanical failure / dust etc, if touring.
How does the digital radio sound with the Sony unit...especially AM? Also how did you run the digital aerial?
I am leaning towards this. I like the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X996 but I am not sure its DAB for Oz. The Sony certainly gets good reviews for sound qual, albeit the Kenwood is raved about...
Cheers
