    D2 Music players?

What have people done for sound upgrades in their D2s? Not fancy pants speakers etc but just the players themselves; what suits well? They seem a funny shaped slot that holds the current tape deck and I am unsure what kind of moder n unit will look like it fits

The standard head unit is 1 DIN, which is a standard size. It has a cosmetic front that makes it appear to be 1.5 DIN, which is a non-standard size.

As to what DIN is, this definition is pinched from wiki answers:

International standard ISO 7736 defines a standard size for car audio head units. The standard was originally established by the German standards body Deutsches Institut fur Normung, and is therefore commonly referred to as the "DIN car radio size". It was adopted as an international standard in 1984.
Head units generally come in either single DIN (1 DIN), which is 50 mm high; or double DIN (2 DIN), which is 100 mm high.
Here are a few threads covering upgrades.

It's also worth having a look at the Communications, Car Audio, and Electronics sub forum.

Is that the definition from "The Grumpy Old Bastard's Dictionary of Newfangled Words"?

    haha

any of the stereo's available at autobahn/supercheap etc will fit, apparantly there is a loom connector available (ISO) which i did not know about, ended up soldering all the connections.
only issue might be if you have steering wheel controls, these maynot work.

If you do have steering controls (Volume Up/Down & Mode Change) then you will need to ensure the new unit has the correct adapter for them to continue to work. It's been a while since I chased this up but from memory Clarion, Pioneer and Axis are a very few that have the capability. Gave up on the change out because it was all too hard & wanted to stay standard so went instead for one of those FM transmitters that plugs into the Cig lighter, Jaycar, $15.00 and works fantastic. Also takes the single pin jack for most phones in addition to either SD card or USB stick.
    Hope this is of use.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

The factory wiring loom has ISO plugs. There is an adapter loom between the ISO plugs and the factory head unit. When you swap the head unit, you can just pull ISO plugs out of the stock head unit and plug in an "ISO -> which ever brand head unit" adapter loom.

I found that the off the shelf loom I bought for a Sony head unit didn't have the wiring for standby power, so still had to do some modifications.

This is the Sony to Iso Aerpro as an example.

APP8SP : SONY TO ISO HARNESS 16 PIN :: New Products

If you find the correct part for the head unit to iso adapter from the Aerpro site you can search Supercheap catalogue to see if they stock it:

Aerpro Wiring Harness - APP8SP, to suit Sony, 12 pin plug - Supercheap Auto Australia

Providing your head unit has an input for a remote you can use one of the Pac Audio SWI steering wheel control interfaces.

iPod Integration for your car and More by Pac-Audio - Connecting you to the future

I've retrofitted the steering wheel controls to my D2 and have used the SWI-PS. It's a bit fiddly to install but works well. I can change volume, select source and skip back and forwards through tracks in my music library, and stations on the radio.

    cheers

If you're using Aerpro adapters, have a look at what side the latching mechanism is on, as it took me about an hour to realise mine was on the wrong side....
Some corrective surgery with a combat knife, one cut and several streams of profanity later and it fit fine

Must have been a special one just for you I used an Aerpro harness and it was fine apart from the missing standby power connection.

You do realise that you can remove contacts from the connector body quite easily? For most connectors all it takes is a small flat bladed jewellers screwdriver.

Repco and Autobarn sell the adaptors to go from the discos DIN connections (not to be confused with the Single DIN size of the hole it fits into.) They are DIN on the car side and then you select the one to suit your new brand of stereo. Cost about $25-.

There's a third party adaptor also available for the steering wheel controls but as she doesn't have them it's not an issue.
