I'm looking at buying a '02 TD5 disco 2 which has come up pretty cheap. I'm told there are some minor problems (leaks, door latch, ect.) which I am not worried about, but there is apparently a transmission issue, where the dash 'M' light is on and the 'D' is flashing on the transmission. The current owner says it is driving fine - Can anyone help diagnose?

I have been reading around the internet and I am thinking that it might be something that isn't too serious but some confirmation/disagreement would be great.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, and if you have experienced this first hand please share.

    Thanks,
    Trip.
Walk away and find something without these sort of problems, There is most likely a very good reason this one is going so cheap

where the dash 'M' light is on and the 'D' is flashing on the transmission.
Do you mean the dash "N" light?
I cannot recall an M light anywhere.
If so it is most probably that the XYZ switch is out of adjustment, and the fix is to loosen the clip/bolt on the cable and align the dash and selector by putting it in neutral and moving the cable until both the dash and selector say N. It then should be correct in all gears.

I haven't had one flash so I don't know for sure that it is the problem but probably.

I think the "M" lights up when you are in low range and have selected a gear other than "D", If you get the "M" and "S" lights at the same time there is usually an issue with the transmission

I checked all the fluids and gave the rest of the truck a once over then packed it ready for 5 days fishing in Sharks Bay, A bugger of a job but someone has to do it
The Missus is in Perth for a few days so I am going on my own so the pack up didn't take anywhere near as long as it does when she comes along

What happened to your Discovery 2 today?

Sucked out the PAS & ACE fluid out of the reservoirs and refilled with nice new fluid. Don't know if the previous owners have ever changed it but it was black like Coke.

Funny in hindsight - went to change the ACE filter for same reason plus I've been getting what sounds like the Pressure Valve making a hissing sound (bit like a quick air release). No issues removing old one, super easy job. New $60 filter would not go in and I accidentally bent it trying. So I ended up cleaning the old one in petrol and putting it back in. Who was it that said the Land Rover is a money pit? Oh yes, everyone! Good thing it's cute or it'd b out on its ear!

M comes up when you press the mode button while in low range. The same button that puts the transmission in sports mode when in high range.

The original was tight but easily went in and out. The replacement wouldn't go in at all. Really...not even a bit. I held both of them up against themselves & they seemed the same. I was in a hurry to get the job done as I had to pick the kids up from school. So u got it in as far as humanly possible then at my wits end tried pushing it in with the screw in cap. That's a bad idea for the record!

I wouldn't buy another one, I'd clean the original. 200ml of petrol and a toothbrush & job done in a few minutes.

Disclaimer: my signature below said that I'm learning to become mechanical not that I was a mechanic!
