What happened to your Discovery 2 today?

Ventured the deepest I’ve ever been into an engine before. I changed the injector washers and o rings of my 15p TD5.

I know a lot of you are mechanics but I’m learning and gaining more confidence and life skills. Job done in 4 1/2 hours. It took me ages to work out how to remove the injectors without a $400 injector removal tool. Ended up using a rocking pry bar. Very successful and only took seconds. A good $30 for 4 bars investment.

Thinking about buying a 2nd hand transfer case and rebuilding it. That should be an experience and a learning curve.

    Do it!!

Read up as much as possible, beg, borrow, steal a dial gauge and magnetic base and a spring/fish scale (I find the old way of a piece of string and a fish scale the easiest for setting up the centre diff bearing preload) and go for it.

The best advice I can give anyone doing mechanical stuff is cleanliness, cleanliness, cleanliness and have a clear plan prior to starting the job and take your time.
Don't let anyone or anything rush you.

Good on you John for having a go, I haven't been a mechanic for 30 years so i consider my just handy now and doing my 15p head was a bit of a stretch being my first o/c motor i've been inside but i got there in the end.
The plus side is all the new tools you can afford when not paying out for labour, i would have bought about $500 of tools and the Nanocom since i've had my D2.

The transfer case shouldn't be that difficult they are basic and there are plenty of tutorials on the net.

    Removed the front prop shaft!

This did not take too long, as I have done this before. Where can I get 9/16 nylock nuts from? I'm not including Bunnings as an option. Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Keables in Footscray .. not too far from you in W'town.
(that's where I got mine from).

11 Braid St W.Footscray. Basically at the top of Willy Rd, where it meets Geelond Rd. Over the intersection and left onto Sunshine Rd. Not too far up there's a bus depot, turn left into there .. and bit of the way down.
The factory isn't very obvious, so you need to keep an eye out.

I also asked him for nuts with slightly longer heads so that the ring spanner sits on 'em with more security when tightening(or loosening).

I found when removing the nuts on the shaft at the transfer case end, the drive flange doesn't allow the spanner enough of the nut to grip onto.

Alternative is Swanston Engineering on Lt Boundary Rd in Laverton, between Geelong Rd and Boundary Rd, 50m or so past the Shell on the corner(RHS).
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!
