I ment to say hasn't, anyway you know now

Ozscott I think you may have misunderstood my situation, DC Joint US, front drive shaft out, to try keep mobile I wanted to lock the centre diff and drive rear only. I should be able to do this if the centre diff is working properly.

I am aware of the cars constant 4X4 system and would never try drive on any hard surface with both drive shafts in and diff locked.

To Redback, no the shaft was out as just described but I have a replacement in now but I still need to sus out that centre diff.

    Thanks for your inputs.

    Mike
I will say this though, just the standard replacement double cardan is fine, I changed mine twice in 320,000ks and I wasn't gentle on our D2.

I'd be more concerned with your cooling system though, those expanding hoses means presurrising in the cooling system and could be a head gasket going(this goes for PhillipA also) this is usually the first signs you have a problem, my advice at the least would be to have it looked at.
    Cheers Baz.

I don't have expanding hoses or residual pressure in the system or any bubbles or discoloured coolant.

The car didn't use any water at all on the return home or since then which included Mt Ousley climb, and the 20km climb up the Alpine Way towing my approx 800Kg camper. I kept it under 100C on the climbs, and that I think is the difference. I will probably invest in a new radiator

I am keeping an eye on it , but my theory is what happened to a Nissan I had years ago. This is that I stopped the engine after a heavy low range climb at 35C+, and the system pressure forced a bit out of the cap . I thought at the time whether I should have stopped the engine or let it idle. I usually keep the reservoir filled to the join , which I now find is a bit high according to the little diagram on the rear engine side of the reservoir. Why put it there for goodness sake.

I guess time will tell . In the meantime the car has never gone so well as it does now.
    Regards Philip A

That's good to hear Phil, give the intercooler a good clean when you replace the radiator, up the boost to 21 to help lower the EGTs, I'm assuming you have silicon hoses, suprisingly they make a big difference to cooling and EGTs, as does a more open exhaust, an EGT guage is a good investment also, helps monitor the EGTs so you can adjust your throttle to lower them, especially when climbing hills, driving via the EGT guage not only helps keep the EGTs and engine temp down but also help improve economy, this helped me a lot with our D2.

Even though the TD5 is a great engine, they do not like heat.

    Baz.

Another factor that I forgot to mention is that my VC bearing was partially seized on the trip and making a horrendous noise.

When I changed it at home it was impossible to turn by hand.ie with one hand inside and one outside.

I now think that when it cut in/stiffened up , the belt could have been slipping on the pulley, as it contacts with the back of the belt. The pulley was certainly highly polished , but on the other hand the belt was OK and the printing was still on it.
Who knows but it is very sweet now.
I have an EGT gauge, boost gauge and silicon hoses and cleaned out the intercooler immediately before the trip. I can get about 21lbs in some circumstances but usually about 19lbs.
It is strange that the electric fan only cuts in at 105C which I think is too hot, or at 28C ambient.
    Regards Philip A

Fired it after, over the course of the last few weeks:
Removed LPG scuba tanks, 40L petrol tank, filler and breether assembly, LPG lines, wires, coolant lines, mixer thingo, LPG computer and wiring, engine management harness.
From donor vehicle installed fuel tank, filler and breather assembly, intake manifolds, ECM harness.
Relocated coil packs to passenger fire wall, re-insulated ECM harness, dumped and flushed coolant, drank about 50 beers. Good times.

We cried a little gear oil from the LT230 on Sunday. That is her way of saying I didn't want the oil changed for Xmas!
I guess I better hunt down a seal kit , hopefully that is the only prob. might also seek out a high capacity sump given the plan is to do a Lap with the van.
