Well I finally had 20 minutes to myself this afternoon crawled under and clunk clunk clunkitity clunk from the cardan joint….

    Will buy a rebuild kit
For the time and effort, I'd just buy a complete Hardy Spicer standard replacement shaft, fully greasable and a fair bit meatier than the stock Land Rover part, cost me about $550inc late last year. I priced a rebuild kit and I think it worked out to be about $350 or so and then the time and effort to install, plus you don't really know if the old shaft wasn't damaged or fatigued.

    Just my thoughts

My sons D2 had a similar issue, I was away with work at the time, 2 days before I was due to get home he rang. The double cardan had let go and snapped the back of the trans completely off..... Managed to find a doner with no motor for $600 with a good trans, so it still lives to keep fighting on

looks like you managed to catch yours just in time

    Cheers

Or a Tom Woods one. That is what I have in mine. As for maintenance on it. I can't access the centre grease point when in situ, so every service the front shaft gets removed for greasing.

DiscoDiscoMan, you have dogged a bullet with this. I know a person who lives at Gove in NT and was traveling to Vic. Got to Alice and his front shaft let go and along with tearing out half the wiring loom
also punched a hole in the side of his auto.

I have heard of this happening with others as well.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Been trying to find an intermittent fault in the front blinker. Yes, the fluid is fine. Th one in the bar would work fine and the other one wouldn’t or vice versa. Finally tracked it down to the installer had used scotch locks and buried the connection in the guts. Grrrr. Scotch locks are stupid things.

Still, been there for 25 years I guess.

If you look in general chat you will see a thread that I started wanting a job.

If I get said job I will ban scotch locks. They should have been banned years ago.

I bet you NASA would not allow them.

Can you replace the front and rear transfer case shaft seals by just undoing the flange nut, remove the flange and installing ?
