Interesting news feature this morning...
Th Grattan institute appears to be an independant, non aligned research institute, set up by Peter Costello and Steve Bracks, and funded by state and federal govt, Uni Melb., BHP Billiton and NAB.New research into the Federal Government's carbon tax has found the level of industry compensation is unjustified and costly.
The Government has outlined billions of dollars worth of industry support as part of its carbon tax package.
But new analysis by the Grattan Institute has found that even if there was no industry compensation, black coal mining and liquefied natural gas projects would be largely unaffected.
The Institute's Tony Wood says it shows the Government is giving too much away.
"[It's] not justified and would be costly to the economy," he said.
Mr Wood also says the level of steel industry support is so generous that producers would receive a "windfall gain".
Under the Government's carbon plan, steel makers will receive free permits to cover most of their carbon emissions.
There is also $300 million to help the industry adjust.
But Mr Wood says the overall compensation package will leave the steel industry better off than if there was no carbon tax.
He says the Government should not confuse carbon tax compensation for steel makers with other assistance aimed at helping them deal with the high Australian dollar.
"Getting the two mixed up together is very inappropriate," he said.

I say you gotta blame Gillard in the end though... Power is the ultimate corrupter and that freaky woman will sell out every last one of us to feed her manic ego and extend her time in the spotlight.
You would think if they were really worried about the environment they would introduce a few laws like aah... Let's make all food packaging recyclable or biodegradable. Both achievable right now. Or, how about just working through the specific issues and making all the polluting privatised businesses fund new clean public assets instead of just playing lazy politics and pushing it all down to the little guy again.
It is really sad, but too much time in the hands of unaccountable and underhanded lying politicians/political parties, means our once honourable and enviable democratic system is starting to show real signs of decay... personally, I reckon it's been "on the nose" for a while now!
When will these "elected dictators" realize that ignoring public protest and outcry will only lead to increased revolutionary acts like those over in London recently??? Perhaps before all that gets fired up over here, we should have a multi part referendum...
1. Should politicians be accountable to deliver on their election promises?
2. Should they be measured half yearly like just about every other working Australian?
3. Should their remuneration, benefits and retirement perks be paid to the same % as their performance?

Take global warming out of the picture nobody can agree if its actually happening. Oil and coal are finite energy resources, they WILL eventually run out. A carbon tax will make them more expensive and thus SLOW their use. It will also make alternative energy more VIABLE. What's wrong about leaving some fuel behind for our KIDS? Yes it will cost us. It's your choice.

Failure to act on climate change is causing social and mental illness. The Climate Change Institute has proof.
And the Aztecs proved that if you didn't cut the living heart out of a human sacrifice the gods would cause a drought (hey, thats climate change too).
Maybe we could sacrifice the mentally ill and solve both problems.
I don't think that is any more stupid a suggestion than 'proof' that failing to act on climate change is causing mental illness. Talk about grasping at straws!

Be honest with yourself mate... Have you watched a session of question time in the last year? What a very expensive, sick little circus it is. If they got their **** together and got on with the job, maybe 3 years wouldn't seem so quick.
And please don't start with the value for money stuff, the saying should be: "you behave like monkeys and we'll give peanuts" sympathizing with these cream croppers is just feeble minded!!!
