Alan, maybe it will be less but to be honest I would rather someone that knows what they are doing can work on it, dubbo is closed until Monday and I can have the car in a workshop by then being worked on, maybe I can get away with only bearings, will see. 1st to 4th is quiet and I have reverse so may not be so bad, will see.
From memory the R380 had an oil feed problem on 5th gear and the output shaft, the ashcroftfix and later the Landrover fix was to cross drill the gear so that oil could reach the shaft, as it would wear the shaft splines
Most of these gearboxes were rectified while the vehicles were under warranty in UK but maybe not in Aust.
Just out of curiosity mate, what symptom did you arrive at that 5th gear is rattling and at fault?
Only asking because a bad front prop shaft can play this same game in filth gear when in resonance
I got a new Ashcrofts R380 outright, with heavy duty bearing mod, plus new DMF & Clutch kit delivered to Sydney in 10 days flat, and the lot was about the same cost as just getting the R380 reconditioned locally.
Really the best option if you intend to do a lot of towing.
When I got mine done, Ashcrofts said they couldn't start one for me for about five days, then add time for shipping etc. My three options were exchange box from the Hunter, local reco of my box or Ashcrofts. All worked at almost the same price, but I needed it superquick, so went for the local reco. The 10 days you got, GoingBush, might have been when all the planets aligned and they had one in stock, when I asked they had none hence the wait.

Speaking to modern motors dungog they know ashcrofts well and are supplying an equivalent reco box to what you would get from ashcroft, booked in for Monday unless I trade it over the weekend.![]()
Liam
Is the box from Dungog a modified example or is it just a reco?. You know you want to keep the Disco!!. Maybe fit a good second hand box (or fix yours) and wait for an Ashcroft box? I know it's only a matter of time for me to be in the same boat. Word of warning on the Triton. Compared to the D2, there a dud to drive and have a weak chassis prone to cracking.
