I think there is a lot more to the story yet to be revealed.

Had I been the driver, I would have noted the registration number of the bicycle and reported the road gage incident to police with my dash cam footage.
Oh! I forgot. Bicycles aren't registered.

I work just around the corner from here and use Beaufort Street reasonably regularly. The changes to the traffic flows on some parts of this street are ridiculous and are doing nothing to improve traffic flows. The section where the final incident took place is quite wide with I think 2 lanes each way. Further down the street there are numerous traffic modifications which make it quite narrow.

However regardless of the original incident and whilst I don't condone banging on someone's car. I have done it in the past to get their attention before unleashing, generally after they have deliberately tried to run me off the road on a roundabout. The end result should not in any way be justified by they started it.

I used to work in our Justice system and have seen many people locked up for reacting, it is not an excuse under the law.

Also the place where the incident occurred is right outside Curtin House, a major police station.

However, because of incidents like this and the fact you don't know what substances someone may be on I choose now to content myself with a verbal as I go past someone who has just needlessly tried to ruin my life because of their impatience.

The reason why these things happen:

1. The television media. Nothing like good ole current affairs type program to flame up hatred for a particular group.

2. Online news articles allowing people to incite violence in the comments sections to stir up the rednecks.

3. Radio - Eoin Cameron, Howard Sattler and the like inciting more violence.

The result is that the more it's seen as acceptable to say stuff like "All cyclists should be run over they don't belong on the roads" the more likely it is that people will see it as an acceptable action to take.

It all comes down to the lowest common denominator.

I can't stress this enough - people need to think about what they say in the public domain that could incite violence.

The motorist is going to come under a lot of criticism (and deserves to) but how much have the media and the vocal cyclist hating minority influenced him to take this action and would the thought have even crossed his mind if this hatred and 'mob mentality' wasn't put out there as being acceptable and the norm.

The motorist is now going to have to live with the consequences of his actions whilst the media, the radio rednecks and the internet trolls just flame away with no regard and with no consequence to what they have incited.

Has anybody counted up how many similar threads there are, just on this forum that cover the same ole diatribe?

And as has been said earlier, the original posted article has been proven to be reflective of actual conditions and attitudes.

I don't buy that Australians have a lower standard of humanity than elsewhere in the world, except when they are driving a motor vehicle. They then undergo a transformation for the worse. I'm generalizing of course. But it is noticeable.

According to the Victorian registration rules, above a certain power output, yes. And, in Victoria, it will require a roadworthy certificate. The same goes for motorised bicycles.

Is your post a debating trick to try to distract the argument from the original subject?

Just reference to an article I read yesterday. I actually found it amusing, but it does raise the question of registration and where the line is drawn.

I've driven in a lot of different countries. Australia has a higher than normal number of rude aggressive drivers and a higher than normal number of rude stupid bicycle riders. It's noticable as soon as you get off the plane and drive home. There's too much ego on the road here, it's a culture. That's why we have nanny speed limits everywhere. As road citizens, quite a few Australians suck. However, gun related road rage incidents are quite low. Perhaps we could address this by allowing bicycle riders to carry sawn off shotguns? It would even the odds a bit. If the rider in Perth had blown the guys tyres out instead of banging on his car, things would have turned out very different.
I think we need to think out of the square, mainly to stop this thread from getting any bigger...
