The township closest to the cobblestone road (and the answer to this question) is on WA's longest river and it was extensively damaged and completely evacuated due to flooding in December 2010. The RAN has a ship named after the river and the townships name reflects this also.
Enough clues ?

ps. sorry all, I didn't expect this to be so difficult. A traveller literally drives over it on the way to Kennedy Range National Park.

with the cobblestone road clearly visible in your Google Earth shot. A bit of (nearly) forgotten history.
