Oh! I forgot to mention that I found it by treading on it in bare feet - it blended in with the pattern on the carpet!
Its that time of the year for those that own old houses as it gets cold and the rodents start moving in. We assumed that the smell we had been enduring was from under the floorboards until the girls got curious and found a rather ripe and flyblown rat in one of the hallway cupboards. The rat blocks from last year are clearly still working......
