Only thing they did was take away some of the semi and full auto units, along with a heap of busted actions that people were happy to hand in for decent $$$.

And Pump Action Shotguns,etc.
We changed over a split system AC unit at a small suburban Police station about a month ago,it was in the Armoury Room.
There were around 50 confiscated Shotguns and Rifles in the room.
And that did not include the handguns, that were kept in a large safe in the corner of the same room.
In suburban areas, the firearms are regularly checked by the licensing branch,in Qld anyway.
Ownership details,serial numbers,type of gun safe,ammunition storage,etc,etc,is checked.
On rural properties it very rarely happens, and there are often loaded firearms in vehicles, and in the house, unregistered firearms around, ammunition here there and everywhere, and on it goes.
In fact, the huge property we used to go to near Coen on the Cape, was run by a fourth generation family. They had no idea how many firearms they actually had,yet alone licensing for all the weapons. When a work ute was stolen by the local kids,a few years back, the property owners were more worried about what would happen if the rifle in the ute was used by the thieves,or taken by them, than the ute.Luckily they bogged the ute in a creek, and the rifle was left in the vehicle.
That particular firearm was registered and should have been stored correctly, not just left in the ute, loaded, with more ammunition in the glovebox.
Correct on all accounts - being responsible with firearms is of utmost importance.
Whilst most of society is ‘good’ there are those who will always cause mischief.
Unfortunately the perceived link between legal and illegal firearms has been pushed to the n’th degree by the A.G.L and demonised.
Reality is that registered owners are extremely unlikely to ever be a problem, and that it is those individuals or organisations smuggling in undisclosed units for illicit purposes that you read about in news reports.
In Doomadgee we have a Vet visit every 2 or 3 months.
A few years ago the Vet had his Ute stolen, in the Ute was 3 rifles' with ammo, only 1 registered & $36000.00 in cash.
The Vet was charged with some serious crimes & had to do a fair bit of explaining why he had so much cash.
The Ute & perpetrators were found after about 3 days, not much cash left, but they got the guns.
We didn't see that Vet again.

It seems pretty simple to me.......... Assault weapons & Auto fire capable NO! There is no need for those to be in Private hands unless one has mischief in mind.
Run of the mill stuff used for Foxes Rabbits & the like, why not provided they are.
I am still amazed how this **** gets into the country, legally.
Maybe I am naive?

Until the eighties every bank teller had a pistol in their bottom draw. This was an insurance requirement and also applied to other industries that handled large amounts of cash. Was ended after Police pressure on the insurance companies as they were worried that one day the bank tellers would decide to actually use one in a hold up. Gun fight at the NAB
Those firearms are still around, registered for a purpose.Operator also has to have a license for the particular firearm category.
It’s generally only a short term registration.
Lots of hoops to jump through.
One purpose,as an example,is vermin control, shooting out of helicopters,by professionals.
For me,and I have been shooting since I was a kid,and still shoot,I don’t really mind the rules as they stand today.
If we go the other way, there would be too many weapons around, particularly handguns,as there are in the US.
Many have no idea what they are capable of,or even just general baseline safety around firearms.
As for the criminal element,no matter what the rules are they will still get what they want, that’s just the way it is.
The authorities just have to do the best they can.
Anyway just my 2 cents worth
so Scarry , where do you shoot? what rifle/ hand gun do you use? what classification is it registered under?
I'd like to take a rifle out bush with me for vermin if I can get appropriate registration.
