To understand what happened there you should look at the big picture. That parade, and it certainly happened , was early in the Flu Pandemic, not near the end. At a pinch, it can be compared to the UK's disastrous coronavirus plan of mass infection to acquire mass immunity. However, in the big parade, the authorities had no idea what was about to happen.. The big picture is in this video. EDIT. Any one who watches this and doesn't get the flu needle is not normal.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Yeah, I am going to look at zombie movies differently now. Sometimes when viewing the complete desolation depicted in the apocalyptic zombie scenarios, I wonder how can it be there are so few survivors... now I know... it was the protests.

What we also know is that there was a "new" drug floating around which was expected to cure all things, including the symptoms of that Flu.. Marketed by a growing German company called BAYER. Guess what it did for blood-clotting / internal leakage ? Some later retrospectives suggest Over-enthusiastic use of aspirin contributed significantly to the toll.

On a serious note, the mis-use of intubating ventilators is possibly doing as much harm as good, too-high pressures damaging alveoli. Sadly, the experiment needs doing in order to see results !
CPAP / BiPAP are looking safer. And WAY cheaper too!

On a positive note, treatment therapies are evolving, despite ingrained traditional resistance. This from the US hospitals.

One of the unsung strengths of the ancient Romans was....their Emergency' Medics.
Compared to the rest of the world, they were brilliant at patching up the Hacked & Stabbed and Chopped, which gave the Roman Soldier confidence to go that little bit harder.... Removing FEAR is no mean feat and is one of the two pillars of any Training.
Also, they $aved a bundle on being able to re-cycle expensively trained soldiers back into active duty.

Finding and implementing - now - an effective treatment for COVID-19 is, IMHO, just as - if not more - important than $pending gazillions on a future vaccine.
    - And what if COV mutates ? So far it appears to be stable. - We'll be chasing shadows just like every year's common 'Flu vaccine recipe!.

Talking to a delivery driver this morning who said the business is flat out trying to keep up with demand. She is working 12 hour days, 7 days a week, but unsure how long she can keep it up.

Interesting graph out of the Financial Times

Would be interesting to understand what some of the 'greyed out' countries were.

Bob! I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion when your Utube link vid said the same thing as the historical article below did ...

"As Philadelphia planned its parade, bound to be a large gathering, director of public health Krusen had ignored the growing concerns of other medical experts and allowed the parade to proceed, even as a deadly outbreak raged on nearby military bases. A political appointee, Krusen publicly denied that influenza was a threat, saying with assurance that the few military deaths were “old-fashioned influenza or grip.” He promised a campaign against coughing, spitting and sneezing, well aware that two days before the scheduled parade, the nation’s monthly draft call-up had been cancelled because army camps, including nearby Camp Dix in New Jersey and Camp Meade in Maryland, were overwhelmed by a conflagration of virulent influenza. Philadelphia’s parade poured gasoline on the flames.

Krusen’s decision to let the parade go on was based on two fears. He believed that a quarantine might cause a general panic. In fact, when city officials did close down public gatherings, the skeptical Philadelphia Inquirer chided the decision. “Talk of cheerful things instead of disease,” urged the Inquirer on October 5. “The authorities seem to be going daft. What are they trying to do, scare everybody to death?”

Authorities HAD a very full idea of what was going to happen, as they were warned.
They had the information of the unfolding events from the army barracks, draft call, etc.
That they chose to ignore the warnings isn't the same as saying they "had no idea about what was about to happen".

Where it says in the extract of the article that Krusens inaction due to his fear of a general panic, is just a euphemism for he didn't want risk his political aspiration so easily.

Let's hope there are none of ours with greater political expectations pulling the wool over our eyes, Arthur.

Mick, us being in the "Vulnerable Age Group" we ditched Coles Delivery as hopeless but we can do WW Store Pickup, well others can on our behalf which still keeps us clear of any crowds. I'm sure Coles meant well & thought it would be the answer to a Maiden's Prayer but on a few occasions they were so inept it wasn't worth the hassle with them. Not to mention their telephone wait times!!!!!! Worse than AGL.
As for WW, we got all that was ordered with no probs. Just that they do not have a Home Delivery.

Yes, but perhaps it should be pointed out that Bayer had invented and patented a new process for making aspirin (and trademarked that name for acetylsalicylic acid), in 1897-99 leading to their growing from a small dye making company to the world's largest pharmaceutical company by about 1905. So in 1918 they could hardly be called a 'growing" German company, especially since they had lost their patent rights in countries fighting Germany in 1914-17, allowing competitors to start making aspirin and take a large part of the market. Bayer as a result lost rights to the trade mark in many places, including Australia. Hence it is rather unlikely that Bayer actually marketed much of the aspirin used in the Spanish flu pandemic, at leaast in the English speaking parts of the world.

Qantas only gave a credit, not a refund for our cancelled trip to NZ because of the NZ lockdown. The Sebel East Auckland only offered a credit until December - then they withdrew that because we hasn't accepted in time - until my wife got onto their HO. They apologised and refunded the money.
