Thread: Corona Virus

I read the Coronavirus has already mutated once so the second version is out and about. That's going to complicate making vaccines.
By next year there could be as many vaccines for it as for the influenza.
This time next year we will be discussing who has had their Covid 19 vaccine and how many strains were in the shot.

Some information on the approach that authorities are taking to testing and identifying cases.

No testing without virus contact or overseas travel | The Canberra Times | Canberra, ACT

No test unless you have been exposed, no testing without symptoms, not because of limited testing capability but because there is no benefit. Much hysteria in the news today but there is little evidence of community spread of the virus as yet.

Not everyone has sick leave. Counting the self employed, the proportion of workers without sick leave would be 37%.

63% of workers in the accommodation and food services sector have no paid sick leave, 45% of sales workers, and 42% of community and personal service workers. These workers would have high contact with the public. And more incentive to go to work feeling unwell.

When it comes to sick leave, we're not much better prepared for coronavirus than the US

I saw that article saying we weren't much better off than the US and I suspect that it may not be as accurate as it pretends to be. For instance my 17 year old daughter works as a casual at the local club averaging three shifts a week along with half a dozen of her mates. Would her world end if she had two weeks where she couldnt work? probably not........ These casual employees are included in the figures in the article. Self employed workers may not have sick leave but should have a contingency for not being able to work in most cases as they could just as easily have a disease or accident that puts them out of action for two weeks.

As mentioned in the article at least we have a good health system that does not charge for testing and treatment

That Grattan institute bloke is getting a lot of traction in the press this morning, I guess doomsayers equate to clicks.

This interview with the Chief Medical Officer outlines the strategy to be used by the government for the outbreak. Until there is evidence of community spread, identification and isolation of individuals and those who came in contact with them will be the practice. The Chief Medical Officer will update this information as required. Hysteria is contagious, and best left unsaid.

Not every casual worker would be in your daughters fortunate position. Many live close to the poverty line, and live pay cheque to pay cheque. It is these people who will be the most affected by quarantine. BTW, there is no such thing as Grattan institute, who are you talking about? Surely not the Chief Medical Officer? EDIT. just did a check, there is a Grattan Institute, my apologies. Another EDIT, it is supported by the Federal government. Interesting.

    Grattan Institute

    Policy Think Tank
Grattan Institute is an Australian public policy think tank, established in 2008. The Melbourne-based institute is non-aligned, however it defines itself as contributing "to public policy in Australia as a liberal democracy in a globalised economy." It is partly funded by a $34 million endowment, with major contributions from the Australian Federal Government, the State Government of Victoria, the University of Melbourne and BHP Billiton.

Our Practice holds a Flu Clinic but we haven't been notified when yet. Hope it is sooner rather than later. Maybe they are still waiting for the Fluvax?

Makes note to self to phone Rooms.

    Edit.
I'm right, they haven't got their Fluvax yet but looks like end of March~ early April.

So now I'll phone the Funeral Director & make some plans.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions is advocating for sick leave provisions be extended to casual workers. Perhaps it could be provided to those who have to be quarantined, so they can pay the rent.
