Without questioning the advisability of wearing masks I suspect that the somewhat heavy handed introduction along with the history of variable advice on the effectiveness of masks and the different scale and nature of the Melbourne outbreak seems to have aroused some strong sentiments in sectors of the Victorian populace.
One Melburnian told the Today show he wouldn’t be wearing a mask and would refuse to pay the fine if he got one.
“Absolutely not. They would have to take me to court and I still wouldn’t pay it,” he added.
“Where is our civil liberties? I guess they don’t exist no more,” wrote one Victorian on Twitter.
“This is one of those times that civil disobedience becomes mandatory,” wrote another.
“Like a good citizen, I’ve stayed home. I’m more than willing to wear a mask publicly indoors but I take my kids for a walk/bike to the park once a day for “FRESH AIR” to relieve some anxiety and stress at government shambles, now he takes the air we breathe?” wrote one Victorian on Twitter.
“Mandatory masks is ridiculous! If they don’t specify a standard of mask (a type that might actually work) & say any face covering (most of which even the scientists say are useless) then how is this anything other than political to create fear inspired compliance of other rules,” wrote another.
The above quotes are from a news.com.story and probably are reasonably isolated instances but it does illustrate how difficult it will be to continue lockdowns for the potential years until the virus burns itself out or we have a vaccine.
The messaging around masks has been very inconsistant and really does not take in the additional vector of the changing circumstances of the outbreak. I suspect that the media advisors say that this would make the message too complicated for the simple punters to understand but people are clearly able to smell a rat when a bandana that scientists say is ineffective will get them out of being fined....
Hopefully NSW/ACT will continue to maintain control on its caseload, its reassuring to see that there are currently no cases that they can't trace the origins of.

Confusion seems to have been at the centre of all available advice & if 'er indoors even gets a whiff of Confusion she is bound to use that strategy against me more than she does now.simple punters to understand but people are clearly able to smell a rat when a bandana that scientists say is ineffective will get them out of being fined....
Seriously though, if asked one day in the future what did I take from this Crisis, confusion would have to be #1 on my list. So many people giving so much advice & usually retracted in total or changed to some degree.
However, SA appears to be on the right track to me, & I honestly & sincerely can't complain about our Govt's effort.
It is also easier for us as we live on 10 acres & Semi Rural nearly on top of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges & being a bit of a Billy No Mates this suits me fine as no visitors is a bonus.
There are no current instructions from SA Govt to wear such a thing. I'd like to see that stay that way.
Ye, re face covering in Vic. It even seems ok to use a Scarfe around your gob so long as the gob is covered properly.
Also as long as it can be doubled & folded securely it might be as good as the proliferation of face masks being advertised in my INBOX at present. I might look like a Bush ranger, but hey ho.
my my , we are upset about it.
the idea of moving the border was to help you guys. so we cop it whichever way we do it.
it would also save thousands from daylight saving, Imagine never having to worry about that again.
edit...I forgot...if we move the border south it becomes our turf, so yeah you're right in saying 'do it on your own turf'
Not sure if masks are any protection or not , but if the powers at be say that it will be a Req under what ever state of emergency rules that give them the power to do so in Vic , then the directive must be followed IMHO , as for the people who seem to think their civil rights are in peril obviously do not give a **** about other peoples civil rights who do not wish to catch the virus if it can be helped .
The troubles with society today could have been a lot less with a couple of yrs in Nasho,s early in life.
I think people power would ensure masks are worn if req Instead of a $200 fine , walk in Honkers without a mask and you subjected to all sorts of unsavory stuff .
Ah, the olde Land Grab scenario/ruse? You may never get it back despite what some Pollies may say now.
A bit like what China is doing in the Himalayas with India ATM. Nicking India's Land, building roads & fortifying it with weaponry, Skirmishes etc. Mind you it could be worse & you get to inherit the Gold Coast & it's problems.. For me, Northern NSW Coast is far enough. Mind you, I don't know where you actually live.
In retrospect the idea of splitting a Town/City like Tweed Heads & Coolangatta in today's dodgy climate seems ridiculous.
Airport is half in & half out of both, what else is? "Righto we are closing 50% of the Airport. You can only land Tiger Moths in future, & no 737's or larger. You want more space, you'll have to knock down half a dozen tower blocks & landfill the Tweed."
Whoever wants to move the Border, let them do it on their side. No worries.
Re Daylight Saving. Think of the Soft Furnishing businesses that will go to the wall not supplying new for olde faded Curtains in Summer.
