AFAIK the reality of the big jump is that the carelessness of the NSW State Government in allowing 2700 passengers of the Sun Princess to disembark is responsible for at least 40 of the jump in NSW alone, and probably many more.

I am pretty sure that it will not happen again, but there will be continuing knock on effects.

Be cheered that "only" 8 people have died so far and we have a great medical system despite what you hear from those with vested interests. I would have expected more to have died of the 13? that are in ICUs in Sydney by now..

    Regards PhilipA

our grandparents had to live in a world that was without vaccine. no runs on TP back then. no fear and panic like we have now. what did they do? they got on with their lives. back then they had measles, mumps, small pox, polio etc.
It's immature posts and attitudes like this that make sensible people believe that you are a troll!
It's fine for young kids, such as you, to contract this virus as it will be a mere discomfort. Your attitude will promote the spread the virus to old and other compromised members of the community, for whom contraction could range from critical illness to death.
I have difficulty comprehending such a self centred attitude.
Congratulations, you've attracted the attention you so desperately crave.

It brings to mind Londoners during the Blitz. Rationing was in force, one didn't know if the next Doodlebug, V2, or bombing raid would be one's last. News was censored/controlled - maybe it still is

I am happy to give up a variety of pastimes for the sake of doing my small part. If everyone does their small.part the heavy lifting is done.

What we saw at Bondi Beach was disgraceful and I think the comments by the PM on this were spot on. The rules being brought in are in part just clear guidelines for good people to assist them to do the right thing, and in part to direct the gooses to do the right thing whether they complain or not.

It's not a grab for power. It's not a long term erosion of civil rights.

    Cheers
I think those at Bondi needed a wake up call, and using them as an example of what not to do was a good call. The news that backpackers partying at Bondi have been infected with the virus just drives home the message. Australians just have to understand that life as we knew it has changed, for a little while, hopefully. And if Australians don't change to suit the circumstances, more draconian measures will be needed. It's not the government who are the problem, it's the minority of the population who refuse to change their habits for the good of the majority. For those who question closing the borders, not much different to the old tick gates, back in the day. Everything that's been done is necessary for our long term health. Suck it up, and get on with it.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Don't waste your breath Ian. Hopefully his Mummy and Daddy will keep him off the streets.

Due to other circumstances my sense of humour has become quite dark. That makes it quite easy to be lighthearted about it.

Am I worried? Yeah, I know heaps of people in the high risk category and I'm seeing plenty of evidence of "I'm ok and won't stop doing what I do, and just get over it" behaviour. While that frustrates me, its not going to change so I don't worry about it and just put extra measures in place to keep me and my family away from them.

Like any issue requiring community minded behaviour, this brings out the best and the worst of society.

Part of controlling a population is the balance of Crime vs Public perception of safety.

Take away all the sport and the bottom end of the gene pool become restless.

    Crime correlation will then increase.

Give them more money and they may stay out of the way and just get drunk/wasted and not go getting up to more mischief than usual.

Actually, when you consider this country are blood / culturally-related, however distant, to the inventors of "Algebra" the original purpose to teach logical thinking - by deducing the value of an unknown, it's not surprising..

Elegant, Efficient and Quick. The least number of Test-Kits for the greatest number of screens. The start of the process.

( Speaking of which, a South Korean company 'Seegene' has an automated, multiple-test kit. Yes, you guessed it, selling by the 10x thousands to the Middle East, yet "not approved" for too long by the US FDA / CDC. )

Think of a see-saw. Apply it to the two ends of a disease outbreak. Everything hinges on .... knowing 'who?' is infected - in the shrtst possible Time, and, Effective treatment of those afflicted. In the middle, despite what we're being told (distracting the sheeple from the failure of the above) is 'Isolation' and possible transmission mitigation, social disruption and it's band-aid support etc.

But look at the leverage of those three parts, and work on the ones that have the most effect on the angle.

Yes, I'm suggesting that for whatever reasons, the Powers-That-Be have got it, well, "Less than optimal..." and we'll be floundering in ever-more draconian "middle" remedies, while the see-saw teeters & totters - discombobulating everyone. ! (Future elections & Natural Selection will ultimately sort them out. Later.)

So, my suggestion is to push for this brilliantly effective 'Front End' - hound your local MP to pass it up the line, talk to anyone YOU know who works in the field, write a letter (Ok, ok, type an email) to newspapers or Radio & TV programs.

For the 'Rear End', more problematical.
Getting serious about enhancing your immune system, enough sleep, targeted nutrients, supplementation, and on the Therapy end various engineering & industry / manufacturers getting together to build equipment locally, (under licence) or significant financial investment in existing European brands, - or buy them out.

I came across a story of a small company who 3D printed a vital air-valve that is dispo$ed after each patient.
    - Spares were becoming non-exi$tant and this pair of engineers kept a large number of machines in service. With a desk-top 3D printer. That's an example of lateral thinking.
We need more of it. And we'll only get it if we TELL the people who are making Decisions. Push and annoy and Direct them.
