Then after 'enabling' it should work just like a bought one coming on to the screen when I select reverse? If so, does anyone have the best place to go (on the WWW as I'm in NZ) for the hardware needed, camera wiring etc? Thanks
That is correct IF you have that touch screen, my 2011 does but your 2012 may not? My camera is "always powered" by the cig lighter socket in the rear. The car computer only shows the reversing camera when in reverse AFTER being enabled, the dealers can't/won't do this for you.

I bought a generic camera from ebay and mounted it in the genuine cam spot the number plate light replacement cameras are OK but don't show the tow ball.

The camera MUST be NTSC, pal cameras don't work on the reverse camera pins. Each set of pins can be viewed separately in the secret diagnostic screen using any AV input but the reverse camera will only show the NTSC clearly.

    I hope that helps?

Great - thanks. Is it easy to access the 'secret diagnostic window' to check AV inputs?

Yes it is, and I'm not actually sure of the sequence but I always get it in the end.
You need to be in the home menu on the screen, (press the left button under the screen) then you press and hold an invisible button in the middle top of the screen for 5 seconds then you move your finger to the left top corner until ( a few seconds) the number pad appears on your screen. the password is 753.(diagonal left bottom to top right)

Like I said I'm not sure of the sequence , it may be left top then middle? Once you get there you will work it out I'm sure.

If you take off the vehicle's upper tailgate opening trim (just pull down from one end) you will find the camera connector.

Really helpful, many thanks. I presume the camera connector is for the video feed. I guess I still have to wire it to a power source (the reversing light or rear cig lighter)? does the connector wire shown then run through the car to the touch screen already (would that be too much to ask!) Otherwise where is its 'other' end and how best to connect that to the touch screen and it looks like the middle two pins from one of the images from an earlier post. Cheers

I couldn't find the other end of that wire, I've since read it ends somewhere under the center console. I'm not sure where you would get the connectors for the ends, it looks to be a type of coaxial cable.
As for the connector into the back of the touch screen, I used a connector out of an old desktop PC, there a wires that go from the front panel to the mother board that have the same pin and pitch, you could also go to a hobby shop and buy some servo connectors (3 pin female) and glue them together to make the 6 pin connector.

I think the video cable type & end locations are explained in Nod's thread:

The other end of that cable under the centre console is pretty easy to get hold of but it sometimes tucked under the heavy brown lining under the console. The connector on the end of the cable is a Fakra F male.

    From this thread: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-disco...install-8.html

The cable to connect between the head unit and this connector is a Fakra Z (which is the unkeyed version to fit all the others) female for the end of the cable from the rear. What you need at the head unit end depends on whether you have the Fakra style or the 6 pin. IIRC the change over from the 6 pin to the Fakra connectors on the head unit came in sometime on MY12's - same time as the rotary gear selector?

So if you have Fakra connector on head unit it's a cable like this: Fakra Female TO Fakra Female RG174 "Z" RF Pigtal Cable 1M FOR Wireless Neutral | eBay

If 6 pin connector on head unit you could find a fly lead with Fakra Z on one end or just get one like above and cut the connector off.

You can thread the cable through from under the console to the back of the head unit. I wrapped mine in foam to make sure it didn't rattle.

Thanks to all, really helpful stuff. Cables all ordered. I'm going to try a 'cheap' camera from e-bay first to see how it goes. Got a Fakra to RCA converter cable for the tailgate connections as that camera has RCA cable (it's one of those that replace the numberplate lights) then look at upgrading if needed to the LR camera itself (anyone know where best place to get one of theses is?) which is Fakra throughout. On a Disco3 thread on this topic some say to get a whole new wiring loom for the rear part so can connect to the Fakra and the spare power plug adjacent to it, under the rear courtesy light - seems a bit unnecessary but ? is it worth it. Also has anyone had problems with loosing the retaining clips for the front fascia when dismantling (another problem in the Disco3 thread) If so where can I order spares preemptively! I think the parts number is FYC500040.
