I can't find info on how the wind o matic works, they only show the top face of the unit.

Has anyone on the forum bought and fitted it ❓

I couldn't be bothered stuffing around with the ratchet solutions others have done. As good as they are I don't have time for that.

    From looking at it here

    Winder-O-Matic Discovery 3/4

I assume it simply sits on the existing 'nut' providing easier access to the place of activation.

For me a socket, extension bar and ratchet were a cheaper alternative than this.

IMO the main issue is the flimsiness of the winch mechanism which is VERY prone to jamming if wound with no tension on the cable. I have accessed the spare tyre twice in the 2 years I have owned my D4 and even then last time I had great difficultly with the winch jamming. I only just got it free. When I get time I will investigate an option like this...

I would like to find a mechanical option that avoids coming through the floor altogether. I haven't had a good look underneath to check feasibility yet.

    Hi Chris,

I've thought about that approach a few times, usually while standing at the side of the road with a shredded tyre, unpacking all my camping gear, in the rain. :-(

If LR had put access to the winder through the chassis rail or somewhere under the removable bumper cover it would have been great. But I'm not sure how that would easily be achieved, as the spare restricts side access almost completely.

    Cheers.

If LR had put the winder like that everyone who has ever had to change a tyre on a Hilux or similar would be complaining...

    Hint when raising the tyre..
Fit the bracket to the tyre and then drag the tyre back from the vehicle until it's taught.

Then commence winching - it's always under load and will not cause any problems.

    Easy....

That's how I was shown, and the 2 times I have dropped the spare (never fitted it though) that's how I did it and it makes it easy

Easy to fit, no drilling, just
small slits cut in carpet, works a treat. Complete access to winch with 3rd row seats down!

In 6 years of D4 ownership, I've used the tyre winch in anger heaps of times with and without a wheel. You just keep a bit of tension on it and you'll never have an issue.

The wheel idea works well in both directions.

A tyre place I went to years ago with D4 number one, managed to jam it .... even though I'd briefed them on how to use it. But they pulled it apart and got it working again with no issue.

They changed the head in the D4 sometime to stop spannermen using cordless guns to undo them,we have a hole you put the hook in then turn Cant use a socket.
