Yes, the D is replaced by the gear you are in. If you touched the left paddle at idle, it will drop to 1 as I think it normally settles on 2 at idle or startup. But the first post said the car was in Drive so I took this as being observed rather than assumed.

In the few seconds it was happening and driving down a very narrow street which required drivers to look for a suitable space between parked cars if close so as to allow an oncoming car to proceed etc etc I didn't get the opportunity to move my Scanguage which is sitting behind the steering wheel and blocking view to the dash info which tells you that 'manual' shift (paddles) has been selected.
So, as some have said, it was quite possibly the fact that I'd knocked a paddle inadvertently. Only time will tell and I'll look closer if it re-occurs. At this point in time I don't think it necessary to look deeper into the trans solenoids etc.
