Serviced Rear Wheel Carriers
My D4 has a long range fuel tank and the spare wheels (two of them) are carried on OL swing-away arms. The arms are mounted on bearing supported stub axles, welded to the steel rear bumper. I cleaned out the old grease in the bearings and repacked them.
The arms open very smoothly on their bearing mounts and they have the recoil and travel managed by a gas shock on each arm. You can get into the tailgate quite quickly with this set up, with just one hand.
When not set up for a trip away, I use just one rear spare, mounted on the passenger side. Using the passenger side aids visibility on the driver's side, through the lower tailgate window on that side. Also, when the tailgate is opened, the passenger side spare swings into the kerb and not into a lane of traffic.
The number plate and pilot light is mounted on the swing away arm.
Best wishes,
Jeffoir
