What happened to your D3/D4 today?

Typically the Incorrect Gear faults means the torque converter or more likely the clutch packs are slipping badly. That is, there is too high of a rotational speed differential between the input and output for the gear that was selected.

So yes, sadly I would say you need to rebuild the transmission.

The U fault comes up when there is bad data detected, that is the Incorrect Gear fault sends a signal to other ECUs that there is bad data being sent. Cascading ECUs then can’t use that data.

Concur with my own thoughts and yes there is bad slippage in mid range gears, has been for some time. TC has been bad as well.

I did a tripple flush, new seals, filter and some dr tranny end of 2018. At that time it was presenting very bad TC shudder / RPM surging. That service I did kept me going till now, by rights I should have performed another service about 18 months back but did not.

Anyway will see what my LR indie mech advice is and when I can get it in.

I should not grizzle as it is original from Aug 2007 and the vehicle has 352 thou km on it.
    cheers
    Peter

350K is a good life for an Auto.

Just try to avoid ending up with a catastrophic failure that renders the transmission unviable to rebuild.

that is what is worrying me, if I had another vehicle I would park it till I can get the work done. As it is I need to drive this weekend Hervey Bay to Toowoomba and back. Will be very gentle with it.

As an option, do the sums / risk assessment on a rental vs damage.

May be cheaper in the long run and sounds like it’s really on its last legs at the moment.

Also consider the recovery cost if it fails to proceed.

If you could find a lower km one from a wrecker (slim chance?) and then rebuild the mechatronics from yours with a Zip kit and swap out could be an alternative?

Interestingly my indie LR mech has I think 3 old D3s he uses to part out and they all still have the transmission in them. Condition could even be better than mine!!

Could be a cunning plan if need be.

Not ridiculous expense to also put a new TC in at that time.
