All sorted for the time being.will check again one motor is in.
All TRE,s new, so popped off one on steering box pitman arm, then rotate 2 full turns left, 2 left, so found centre and made a mark, where the steering box shaft comes out. Set steering wheel.
Bottom steering relay arm at 90 degs to Track rod (1160mm). steering to relay rod, fitted, Now 623mm as per book, with just a couple of threads showing each end.
String lines set up, and drag link adjusted for 2mm toe on both wheels.
Bolts nipped up, and turned to lock stops both side.
The drag link measured 789mm, 3mm longer than manual. Couple of thread showing on all TRE's now.
    Thanks for the comments.

    GearBox

Whist waiting for the Diff thrust washers, A 40thou had got mixed in with the box of 50's, glad I measured them, before fitting them.
Decided to start cleaning up the S3 Gearbox I am using. It was attached to the low mileage motor I rebuilt. Hoping low mileage also.
Gilberts S3 gearbox jumped out of 1 and 2 I think. Plan to do it up as a spare.
This is also the last jigsaw piece, of Gilbert, I need to learn all about. Bit scarey.
I drained the oil, transfer a bit dirty, but no bits at the bottom.
When I drained the Gearbox, I discovered A broken syncro spring and a tooth. Also a very small amount of syncro bronze flec.
This is not the first time, I have come across this combination. In fact all 4 gearboxes I have drained oil from spewed out the same.
So, how common is the broken clip, tooth ????
Does clip break, then jamb up gear and break tooth, or broken tooth cause clip to break. Could the flec come about by loosing the clip, allowing syncro float. How many GearBoxes operating perfect without this tooth ????
I plan to clean, open up and have a look, checking some clearances with a feeler gauge. I have a seal and gasket kit.
Often mentioned is loosing balls and springs on removing gearbox cover, but noticed external clips holding things together. Guess removing them will stop it happening.
The casing the High/low lever attaches to looks quite easy to remove, pull apart to clean ????
As always, Any advice, greatly welcomed.
    Thank you.

    My 'NUTS'

UK boys are a bit worried about my 'NUTS,'
There is some thing odd in your steering, the bottom arm from the relay has the ball joint fitted the opposite way to mine , ie mine has the nut on the top side .
Is this a different arm for the shock adsorber arrangement?

There is some conflict in the photos.
Some have the ball joint with the thread pointing down (incorrect) while another has the thread point up (correct).

I should be in bed, but brain is running around, so looked at my other 75 S3.
Taper goes up, nut on TOP.
Took some measurements. Swan neck on Gilbert sits 3cms lower than the swan neck on the 75 S3.
Felt numbers on lower side of swan necks. Will look in the day light.
Wonder what is fitted to Gilbert, taper down, nut on bottom ???? Will check the S2 and 2a I have also.
    Plot thickens.

    Thanks Johno.
Don't think my lower one is a S3, maybe early S2.

Gearbox coming apart. Easier than my 4 speed Villiers gearbox on my Greeves Trials Bike.
Looking at it as 3 different components. Hi/lo. Transfer and main.
Things and problem discussed on forums becoming clearer.
Just need some larger circlip pliers to make life easier.
Not sure if I use this box, may have to pull Gilberts original box apart and mix the best bits. Had stood uncovered in a paddock for many years and has some internal corrosion. It may clean up ok, will see.
With syncro clips breaking, should I just change them all ???? Can see where the broken one came from. first syncro after the main input shaft was slipped off.
Amazing how much it slops around without it. How do you work out syncro wear, by looking at it ????
are they all the same size ????
with one of the 3 clips missing, what symptom would be noticed with the gearbox. I never had this box fitted.
    thanks.

    Steering Arm

Pics showing the different lower relay arms, plus part numbers.
I am thinking the longer one is off an early series 2, possible, 1.
Having the arms on top of the swivel housing. Taper puts nut on the bottom.
Shorter one off my spare S3.Taper put the TRE nut on the top.
    Thanks.
