Muppet, only 25 clicks so far and one soft creek crossing and totally transparent.
Those straight cut teeth on the Maxi gears do howl though, I need new floor matting.

Will be interesting to see what it feels like on dirt, but from what Steve/Roverresuce has said, I think I'll be a happy chappy.

time to upgrade the original 1999 front seats in the 110. they were in poor condition and were starting to play havoc with the old back. not much available to replace them with unless you have a couple of thousand dollars for recaros etc. maybe worth their price but not in my range. far from it. figured the hardest obstacle would be easy access to the batteries while using the original mounting points. couple of days thinking and came up with a base that hinges at the rear and could accommodate almost any bucket seat. i found a pair of subaru liberty seats that have drivers side squab adjustment and lumbar andjustment with almost identical dimensions to the original landy seats.

a weekends work has the passenger side fitted. the drivers side will only take a few hours as the bases have been fabricated and measurements verified from the passenger side fitting so well. they do sit a little higher overall but not too high. they also slide back further than originals . ill see if i can get some pics of the bases for anyone whos interested in fabricating their own.

its a quick release system holding the front of the bases in place so i can access under the seats within seconds. no nuts and bolts to undo. just a pin to pull out. looking forward to trying the drivers seat on the road to see if the effort was worth it. im sure it will be.

the subaru liberty seats can be found for 100 a pair if you look around. they even have leather ones that would fit the same i would guess. pictures speak a thousand words so if theres any interest ill take a few

If cost is a major concern, the cheapest solution is probably to recondition the existing seats, that are quite good in good condition. New seat cushion and back foams and covers are available, and these probably cost less than the engineering costs to fit different seats.

(I got lucky - someone on here bought a second-hand Defender, which came with the original unused seats in the back, they having been replaced from new by Recaros, and sold the original seats. Upholstery colour is different, but what the heck!)

The foams are relatively cheap, I bought a complete set of Exmoor Trim squabs and backs from Karcraft (can't recall exactly how much, it was twelve months ago) and had them trimmed in canvas for $120/squab, including modifying the drivers seat to make the front a little taller and longer.
Haven't had the backs done yet, soon.
My upholsterer was really impressed with the foam quality, reckoning it was better than OE.

ok. got the drivers seat in today in a couple of hours. with the adjustable squab ive not lost any leg room or height compared to the original drivers seat. i have gained excellent comfort and support. only thing to do now is change the seatbelt mount from the floor of the landy to the side of the new seats where there is provision for the stalk to be mounted the sides of the new seats are higher and hold you in better but make it difficult to insert the seatbelt in its original position. half an hours work. all up cost. seats $100 a pair in very good condition from a local wreckers. steel, $ 36.00 time. from start to finish without the thinking time, 8 hours i guess. but i work for a very low rate and for those who feel the need to have the mounts engineered, ive not looked into it and have no intention. ill run the risk if it ever comes to it. i believe they have lost no strength compared to the original landrover mounting system. the car doesnt have airbags etc to deal with. its an old landrover./ theres a couple of pics attached, hopefully, of the mounts before painting or having the new seat rails attached. the rails either bolt or weld to the blue lengths of steel. i chose to weld. the original subaru rails were spot welded to the mounting brackets that i removed. you could do this without any welding at all, i just found it easier to weld the rails. ill take some finished pics over the coming weekend with seats fixed and tilted back for access to the boxes for batteries and ecu. someone might come up with a better system im sure. feel free to steal any ideas you see here.

    cheers.

re the pics attached, the black rails bolt to the original landrover retaining nuts in the floor. they are similar to the seat extenders available to slide your seats further back. the blue rails lay over the black and bolt at the rear allowing it to hinge upwards for access underneath. the front is held by a couple of pins with pull clips for easy and quick removal. finished pics to come.

    cheers

seats installed and test run over a couple of hours drive. very supportive. they sit maybe 1 inch higher than original that had collapsed with age. im 6'1" and 100kg and feel comfortable in them although getting in and out requires a slightly different approach given the higher sides on the new seats. not hard, just different approach. i have a little more legroom having sat them as far back on their rails as i could and still be able to tilt the whole seat with frame back to access the cubby holes for battery. pics probably explain it better than i can.

    cheers.
