shouldthere be a magnet on the end of the threaded section of the engine-oil sump drain plug?
No but there should be. You can buy small circular magnets at Jaycar that will stick there perfectly.

    Yes and yes.
There is a thread about this last week AFAIR. Maybe Helicoil or oversize plug

    TD5 Oil-change problem

Hi Philip, and thanks for your reply.
Do you know if a helicoil repair can be done on the sump, in situ?
Or does the sump have to come off to be dealt with?

I have ordered a new plug so that I can compare the thread on it, and on my present one.
At least I can then be sure that I actually have the correct plug.

    Regards, Andrew

That is a great idea (and, like so many of them, quite simple!!)

    Yes and yes.

    Birthday Gifts

It's my birthday on Saturday - so I am going to buy Gary some gifts with the 25% off super cheap today. Maybe some tasty Penrite HPR 5W40 and some hand tools.

Afraid I don't know but probably if you put the car up on stands to give room for a mobile helicoil guy to get under. Give one a call.

Installed my engine watchdog TM4 tonight.

I took to the ashtray with the dremel and mounted it there. I'll post up some pics and more detail of where and how I mounted the connectors.

I haven't driven it yet, so will see how it goes tomorrow.

But it was a well laid out kit with some of the best installation instructions I've seen in a while.

And, for those who are interested, the road from Bourke to Wanaaring is fair ... 55-70 towing the kamper. Bit rough & soft in spots. Driven worse. The road from Wanaaring to Tibooburra is fantastic !! 75-80 all the way. They are doing some major improvements about 1/2 way along and the whole road is a bit like an outback super highway.

    Bugga!
I was up that way a few weeks back, and limited for time. Only got as far as Packsaddle, but behind my schedule, so made the decision to turn back, as there as no use heading any further thinking road conditions could have been worse than I expected.
This info tells me I under estimated by about 15-20km/hr, which would have allowed me the time I was behind!

the only upside is that there's always a next time.
