When at primary school there was one kid who was not allowed chewing gum. Being a kid and wanting to feel was fitting in with what everyone else was doing looked around and found something else to chew so was part of the group. Not sure lead air rifle pellets were really a better alternative to gum. Being lead were soft and could be chewed and spat out when finished like gum. Probably lucky for him the fad ended fairly quickly
Chewing on a bullet was de rigueur in the doctor's surgery, in the old wild west shows.

Chewing on lead pellets, that’s worse than being an electrician chewing on electrical cable, unbeknown to him that it contains lead

As was the slug he pulled out of one's shoulder. "**** Doc, that hurt. Now can I have that Jelly Bean, black if you have one."

    Nicknames for the apprentice:

    Which one do you have?

"Wicket keeper" - puts on gloves and stands back
"Harvey Norman" - 3 years no interest
"Grenade" - waiting for him to pull the pin
"Sensor light" - only works if someone walks past
"Blister" - appears when the hard work is done
    "Showbag" - full of ****
"Seaweed" - floats around all day and stinks
"Lantern" - not very bright, and has to be carried
"Penguin" - always on the ice
"Deck chair" - always folds under pressure
"G-spot" - you can never find him
"2-stroke" - hard to get started, and always smokes
    "Morphine" - slow moving dope
    "Bushranger" - holds everyone up

PS had to remove a couple of nicknames to keep up with the G rating

One of my apprentices we call Wombat, he’s a bit of a ladies man
He’ll take the whole family out for dinner, has a couple of beers and a good chat to the young lasses old man, Eats roots, shoots and leaves
Moves on to the next grassy patch
