Now just need to get one of those spare wheel extension sockets. Anyone know where you get them?

Thanks John - looks great but $75 seems steep for a bolt and socket doesn’t it

Had to fix a busted upper tailgate cable/latch today. So glad I dont have a cargo barrier or rear drawers to make life difficult. I'll defiantly be making plans to install a manual release when I get some time.

I feel your pain. I ended up having to tek screw the side plastic mouldings on the lower tailgate back in place after I did mine, the latch failed with the tailgate closed, felt really bad tearing into the carpeted liner, but had to be done.

bought a new genuine latch assy, hasn’t given any trouble since.

I just change it before it fails like most other LR stuff. In fact, it’s been a few years. Might change it again.

Yes I agree with you, but there must be a market or they wouldn’t sell them.

I keep reading about the need for this, but it is unclear whether it is on D3s or D4s. Is the tailgate release mechanism failure something confined to D3s or does it also afflict D4s? Thanks

All. Just like the door latch motors also gum up and fail. Trouble is it’s such a problem to repair once it’s failed in place hence why I replace the unit periodically. Others fit a manual release in case it fails.

Manual release cable is simple and cheap. All it takes is some 20kg fishing wire traces connected end to end, and maybe 30mins to fit. Just need to remove cover, drill a small hole, connect wire trace, and feed the cable to somewhere you can access it.

For maybe $5-$7 for a pack of wire snap traces it is cheap insurance in case the tailgate release cable fails.

Details in this thread for a more permanent manual release cable:
    Manual tailgate release D3

Refer to post #68 for a pdf document I created for the bike cable version.

    Cheers,
