Yeah, it's a jacking point. Those brackets have become a bit uncommon as a lot of them get taken off when work is done on the swivels and never replaced.

Old Vinyl stripped off. Foam sanded back at bit then Foam added.

Bit of cutting and sanding ahead !!!!

    Hi.
    Rebuilding my steering box today.
Gave the steering shaft, after shimming 2 thou (inch) end float.
Manual talks 2 to 4 lbs ft
Will that be OK, or should I aim for some resistance ????
    Thank you.

    Dash Top

    Hi,
    Dash top coming along.
All the 'extra' foam cut off with bread knife. then belt sanded, lightly belt sanded (240 grit) then light hand sand with same belt.
Bit heavy handed with my 'First' cut, and cut into old foam, (1st pic, front LH side) so added more foam, filling in a few other holes, allowed to set then cut and sanded to shape.
    Happy with results.

    Steering Box.

From the advice of a UK Forum member,
'The setting is 2-4lb /ins so very small I used a jubilee clip to fasten a bracket to shaft and attached a 1lb weight around about 2" out from centre of shaft.
The shims you can buy nowadays are actually plastic mine did not need any extra adding just replaced gasket and original shims nipped up and tested with weight as above.
A small fishermans sping balance may work with a cord wrapped around the shaft you would need to calculate weight for the distance from centre'.

    I found a tool, 1lb in weight.
The outer steering column was not tightened up, as I had put it back to its original mark on assembly, but seemed to protrude to low onto top bearing cup. followed manual on assembly, after failing to 'just try' on fist attempt.
I slid inner shaft, down over greased top cup, in place, added the 10 balls, added more grease to hold in place. Turned everything upside down, cup weight and grease, hold balls in place.(do over sheet, tarp) Carefully slide over outer column tube, onto to bearing cup. Cable tie tightly, the steering shaft, closely to the top of the outer column. Top bearing is now held firmly in place.
Steering shaft now inserted into top of steering box, and centre bearing assembly is insertes and wound up to half way. Now bottom bearing, shims and plate can be added.
When the lower cover plate was tightened up firm, the outer tube slid up. I then tightened up and torqued then lower plate bolts. New bearing cups maybe slightly thicker ????
4 steel shims (10thou inch each) gave 2 thou of play. removed one steel shim and added 3 plastic shims (2 thou each )
2 plastic nipped it up to tight.
4 steel and on plastic came out, when pulled apart.
New 'O' ring for pitman shaft.
Couple of hiccups, on assembly, cable tie around the top of inner shaft slipped slightly, before bottom plate was fully tightened, allowing couple of top balls (10 top, 10 bottom) to fall out. So had to do it all a second time, Loosing one of the larger (12) centre balls for five minutes.
All together, and filled with EP90.

They certainly are interesting jiggers to get together that's for sure. I've done the original in mine, but have the power steering version to reassemble - not looking forward to doing that all again.

2nd time was easier than the first. 4th time was easiest.
Must have been several 3 armed workers in the LR factory.
