Welded a plate on the car trailer for the check chains, an upgrade needed for the registration.
For tomorrow AlexH and myself are off to JC's workshop at Kingston to pick up a Defender remains, if the theme of naming the wrecks at my place to keep track of what is what, this will be named Peter after the PO.
Off I toddled in 'Fred' with the Trailer in tow to get the inspection done, I became aware not all was right, the alternator red light was showing and over to the side of the road I pulled.
I lifted the bonnet and looked at the serpentine belt that was happily doing it's laps, then at the wires going into the back of the alternator, they were all attached and felt tight, GLOOM diagnostics crook alternator.
I know that you get told that welding on some thing attached to the car can blow the alternator, but this is the first time I have come across the alternator blowing when the car wasn't attached and 'Fred' was parked well away!
So I must go out now and try work out which one of the spare alternators I should use, I do have a small collection to choose from, so back to the grindstone.

Removed the Defender windscreen hinge (bracket I think now) which had suffered a bad attack of corrosion. Once removed the damage was confined to the alloy hinge, and once attacked with a smooth file, wet & dry & then primed, painted & clear coated came up like new. Also made a rubber gasket from an old inner tube to hopefully prevent a recurrence:
Below is the after picture on the 107" just to show how the hinge has changed over the past 60 years.
Next weekend the other side will be done!![]()
Fitted all new TRS-Lucas brake pads to the L322, and 2 new wear sensors, then reset the warning light. (to reset on the BMW models, just turn the ignition to position 2 but don't start the engine, and wait until the light goes out, then start car, stop and remove key, then start again - presto, no light, no "check brake pads" bong!)
Now to rebuild the in-tank pump/fuel level sensor unit I got from ebay Italy with a new pump to replace mine....
Fraser
added fuel tanks.

[quote=wrinklearthur;1862872]It passed the rego check with the comment that looks good, my emu droppings couldn't have been as bad as some.Welded a plate on the car trailer for the check chains, an upgrade needed for the registration.
Peter is now parked in my yard after paying Paul--- off to JC's workshop at Kingston to pick up a Defender remains, --- this will be named Peter after the PO.
Pulled the alternator out of 'Fred', found the stator had gone open circuit, so removed the regulator module and dumped the rest.the alternator red light was showing and over to the side of the road I pulled. ------ So I must go out now and try work out which one of the spare alternators I should use, I do have a small collection to choose from,
I had another 100 amp alternator that used to be in my Defender and it would fluctuate wildly in voltage, the salvaged regulator fitted nicely, so I went to refit it back in 'Fred, but all wasn't well.
The 'P' gasket looked to be leaking, this shouldn't be as it was replaced while the wife and myself were in Apollo Bay, Vic. So moved the housing to have a look and the gasket looked good, nothing else for it but to remove the housing entirely.
After a good look in the daylight I could see that a repair by a previous owner had failed, they had by using epoxy metal putty filled in some corrosion in the port of the water pump housing, but the coolant had found its way under the repair material where it had gone stale with corrosion continuing to a point where it started a leak.
I happened to have another spare housing ready to rebuild another 300TDi engine, so in 'Fred' it went and it looks like a brought one now.
The wife and I then went for a drive to the nursing home visiting the mil and 'Fred' didn't miss a beat with both repairs being most successful.

Went mad with a 'clay bar' over all the paintwork... came up as smoooth as the proverbial... Used water and car-wash as the lubricant.
Also did the windows - inside and out - using the "correct" lubricant, waterless wash.
Came out so clean that you can hardly see the glass.
Naturally I bought the bar on evilBay, paid around $4.60 for it, not $38 + as the local shops want., (Bar plus $17 bottle of waterless-wash spray)
Now I have to wax the Beast....
