I got a rush of blood yesterday and decided to finally replace the long suffering steering box

    And a set of these

Ditched the silly pitman arm with the joint in it for a later disco type so I had to fir a new mount for the damper

And changed the gear box oil

Decided to fit the boost gauge and the EGT gauge to SWMBO's disco...

Predrilled plate doesnt fit the manifold on SWMBOS car, fits the spare one nicely....

Decided well, may as well change the turbo housing, thought about that and thought that while I was at it I may as well fit the watercooled turbo instead.

Worked out why the donor vehicle blew the head apart and melted the pistons, wastgate actuator wasnt moving till over 40PSI of pressure was applied and when it did it was only opening about 3mm... pull turbo down and fix the bolt on housing so it doesnt foul on the wast gate any more. Got curious and decided to check the settings on the fuel pump from the donor vehicle 1.65mm plunger lift AND the fuel screw is out so far it was probably rubbing on the fire wall, Didnt bother to check the compensator settings.

Fitted water cooled turbo, modded the intake manifold for better fuel control and boost gauge fitting, drilled the housing to take the EGT probe. plumbed up the heater hoses for the water cooled turbo.

    gauges come next week.

tonight I fixed my erratic -all over the place -unreliable speedo.

one of those job I have put off for months, in the end all it took was a couple of bourbons for ambition, a torch and a rain coat. it was a 5min fix, just had to crimp the plug closed so it was a bit tighter on the back of the alternator.

'Fred' was losing fluid and will Wrinklearthur diode

    Jumped into 'Fred' and with a flourish turned the key to start ---------------- !! --------------- !! ------------ 00000000000000000 ---- Nothing !!

The battery was devoid of electron pressure, flat as a squashed maggot.

    So I had a little look in the top of the battery, it was well down, 'Fred' was losing fluid and this brings a couple of possibilities forward;
The battery is had it, which is unlikely as it is not that old.
Or the voltage regulator isn't working and the alternator is over charging, back peddle to one of my previous posts and you will see where 'Fred' had the alternator die.

Have I got another fault in the repaired alternator?

After adding water to 'Fred's' battery, it spent all day on the battery charger and on the slow charge rate eventually steadied off at 13.6 volts and with the engine running the voltage rate was 14.2 volts, they are the voltages you would expect from a healthy charge circuit.

So I have left things as they were for now and will test the open voltage in the morning, if the battery charge has dropped considerably, I will undo the lead going to the 'B' terminal and check for current drain back into the alternator and depending what I find, I will pull the alternator out and then strip it down to check the diodes for leakage.

So is it fifty lashes at the whipping post to Wrinklearthur for not checking them when I had it apart last?
Well ! The ends of the windings are spot welded together and to separate the alternator into the parts that should be exposed for the diodes to be tested, means that the welded joints need to be dismantled.

What is the verdict of the AULRO jury ?
Is Wrinklearthur going to diode, watch this thread about 'Fred', for the next exciting episode.

Separated diesel soaked nuts and bolts after dismantling some donor parts, 2A.
Separated a butler light from its mount after 40 to 50 years work under the next-to-rear crossmember (1967 army 2A chassis). Its referred to as a rear convoy light as it illuminates the white painted rear diff when on blackout ops. The bulb is still good because the rubber seal is still good.

hey, its a land rover, it leaks a little

but no, problem was found under the hood, behind the alternator.

ps. and yes, the disco does (or did) leak, also ran some wind screen sealant around the windscreen this arvo to hopefully fix this. no doubt I will find out tomorrow as to whether this fixed the prob or not. (half the fun )
