3 waves in 30 mins this afternoon, we were on a mission in our black Puma 90. First from a grey 130 HCPU pulling into the Glossodia general store. And then a red P plate girl in a white Puma 110 at the north Richmond lights waves from driver and passenger, at the other side of the lights another white Puma 110 and again waves from driver and passenger :-)

4 waves yesterday, heading home out of sydney around lunch time a grey 110 puma pulled up next to me at the lights on the citywest link, opened the window and a big smile and a wave. A few minutes later on wattle st in haberfield big wave from a city bound Perentie then another Perentie about an hour later and a hesitant wave on Windsor Rd at Mulgrave.
Later in the afternoon a wave from a very nice looking black 2 door 130 hcpu (i think) on Kurmond Rd @ Freemans Reach. Happy camper [emoji16]

Past a 101, a left hand drive 6 wheel drive haflinger and a perentie with an army trailer in a small convey in Richmond but not a wave returned. Then half an hour later passed another perentie and got a wave. A few minutes later passed a reddish Td5 extreme with a trailer in north Richmond and again no wave...

All off to Cooma I'd imagine. No waves though, probably didn't notice me in the RTV ute.

Driving down Stirling Hwy tonight a matching black 110 to mine drove past. Driver and passenger both gave hearty waves. By chance I then ended up next to them at some lights in Mosman Park and we had a brief but good chat and some mutual admiration for our mighty beasts!

Having just recently purchased my first Defender (TD5 110), I'm new to this waving thing. I got to work after my first drive and rid the boys some random in another Defender waved at me (I did return the wave), I was informed it's a Land Rover thing. Since then, every defender has waved at me except for one new 90. I thought it was a bit odd on the first day, since then I've grown to enjoy it and proudly continue the tradition.

We have just returned from an 8,000km trip to Darwin and back. The first leg of the trip was as support crew for five cyclists who rode from Winton to Darwin. We averaged 100km per day on that leg of the trip. We got a good wave and headlight flash from a 130 crew cab Puma towing a trailer heading south on the Stuart Hwy (basically the same as our setup). There was a Tdi 110 (stretched to 120 the owner said) with a whopping great Palomino camper on the back at Three Ways. It was a beautifully maintained unit.
There were numerous other Defenders sighted along the way. The last before getting back to Rocky was a Series Ute approaching a low level narrow bridge west of Torrens Creek. Without a doubt the most enthusiastic wave came from the passenger in a Disco in Darwin.

We, or I should say, the Cook, always waves to Defenders although there's rarely a response. They're probably not ready for a wave from a Disco. [bigsmile1]
Saw a nice series 3 outside Total Tools at Joondalup yesterday, very nicely done up in a mushroom colour.
Didn't get to chat with the driver though.

Not sure what the etiquette is, but I wave to all series, 101 and Defender shaped Land Rovers regardless. Even return waves from Discos and the odd classic RR if i see them. With regards to the response from defence force vehicles, I think zero to date. Sometime you get an odd look..

I actually got a wave from a black L405 the other day. I was quite taken aback by that, but managed to get a return wave in. Trouble is, you just don’t expect it from a Rangie or Disco anymore so you don’t look out for it. It’s nice when it happens though.

Exchanged several waves with Defender drivers on a Brisbane-Sydney return trip this week. Was surprised at the number if Defenders on the northern beaches of Sydney, where they seem to be a bit of a status symbol. One neighbour of our sons has both a litres Defender and a nice D5, for example.
Actually, there are a lot of D4s doing family duties in that area - there were 3 D4s in our son's street alone, as well as two Range Rover Sports. D4s are excellent family wagons and $40k finds some nice examples on carsales.com.

I have a Puma and my mate, Leeds, has one too. We're builders in Hobart and compare waves per day. I average three or four. I get really annoyed if I miss a wave or don't get wave back from another Defender owner. I take it as a HUGE insult. It's a great game! Never had a wave from a Disco or, God help me, a Range Rover driver (generally too busy to wave as they're talking to their stockbrokers whilst trying to placate little Quentin and Camilla in the back seats - the video screens were probably playing up again.) - then again, I never wave at them. Maybe I should as everybody in rural Tassie does the one finger wave (the nice one, not the naughty one!) to everyone else regardless of car. We're a very friendly bunch.

Hi all,
I have noticed that fellow defender owners don't seem to be waving to each other as much as they did in the past. Especially puma owners, and the worst "offenders" were in Victoria. Come on guys, thats one of the things that set us apart from the others! who cares about Jap 4x4s. And discos-Dime a dozen. But Defenders, its like a club within a club. So come on guys lets get the rage back.
Any thoughts?

Had my first encounter with another Perentie at Bunnings a couple of days ago. The spot next to it was free but at the critical moment another car turned the corner in front of me. I willed it away with an under the breath "no you don't you bastard that's my spot" and the vehicle drove right past leaving a space so the two lizards could get acquainted again :). Unfortunately didn't have my phone so no photo:(. Said hello to the owner upon return and exchanged pleasantries, they must of had a bit of a surprise when they walked out.

There was a post some years ago, possibly way back in this thread, about the appropriate level of recognition given to different models of Land Rover.
It started with a single finger raised for such things as Range Rovers or later Discoveries, graduating to a full hand lifted from the steering wheel and waved for Series II and III.
On my recent 10,500 km trip from Tuross head to Perth and back, there were very few Defenders on the road. Between Ceduna and Perth we saw just two on the way over and four on the way back.
The encounters were so rare that most of us were so excited that we cast convention aside and gave each other the full Series I wave.
Headlights were flashed and both driver and passenger waved enthusiastically with both hands.

Picked up my 2013 Defender 90 last week in Melbourne, and drove it back to QLD.
The previous owner did mention the phenomenon to me (which I already knew about, long time LR fan boy) but it was nice that he thought it necessary to pass on the tradition to me.
Total Defenders passed: 4
Total Defender waves received and returned: 4
First one was out near Bonnie Doon and I saw him coming a mile off, I was wondering if it would happen like I'd heard about, and there it was, big wave from a farmer in his twin cab 130. Made my week. As I got more comfortable in the car through the trip I was initiating the wave myself and they were always returned or we waved at the same time.
Been pottering around Brisbane over the weekend and probably passed another 3 or 4 Defenders including a great looking Perentie and all waved or waved back.
So... I think the wave is alive and well.

The Cook insists on waving to all Defenders from the navigators seat in the D4. I tell her to stop it but there is the occasional wave back. Luckily Defender drivers
are more aware of other model LRs than either Rangie or Disco drivers. :)
Long may the wave continue.

Came here to say that I'm a new Land Rover owner (Defender) and the first time I encountered this was from another Defender driving past. Had no idea this was a thing but I (almost) always spot Defenders driving past and now they're waving.
I've had many wave backs and a few I've caught too late. Driving on the Burwood Highway last week I had a white Defender pull up behind me, even slowed down so I could wave as he drove past.
Had no idea the wave was a "Land Rover" thing but will definitely be keeping my eye out for all of them now.

I used to drive an MG. The wave was universal, you saw an MG, no matter which, you waved ( in fact it was a polite two fingered salute ). Sadly, Defender drivers only wave at Defenders ( OK, they wave at my Series ). How about waving at Discos? OK, these days it's hard, when a RR looks like a Ford Territory... , but a D2 is a Land Rover, OK? Wave at it. I wave at you.

Yeah, that's been a thing for me too.....in work cars or whatever and unable to properly communicate with passing Series vehicles and Defenders, waving at them, getting no response and being left with an empty, crushing, rejected feeling: thrown out of the herd. A few days a go we received an E-mail from Mazda on this very subject but I don't think they had thought it through very well. What was ok for Land Rovers is not ok today with a modern car & it's reflective & tinted windscreen.
Today's cars inc Mazdas, are not the same as "yesterdays" vehicles with quick action sliding glass, flat screen, (Thank God,) and there are so many on the road as to make them invisible anyway.
I do not intend to locate a window switch, wait until the window drops @ even 60kmh to wave at someone, another Mazda owner or not.

Growing up as a child and then teen in my dads early 90's 110 I used to ponder and be embarrassed about the wave all the time. Now, owning my own 110, I find myself giving everyone the wave; Or the one finger of the wheel. But - this topic hits the nail on the head. 4/5 of the last defender's I've seen in my travels haven't offered anything back in the slightest! That's nice & if you ever get a wave from a Bearded fella in a White Mazda CX-3 that'll be me, an ex-Discovery 1 Facelift, owner. No, not a facelifted owner but you get my drift.[bigrolf]

Actually I thought I recognised you in Bunnings a few months ago but alas it wasn't or I didn't think it was. If that person was leading a Horse, (in Bunnings? [smilebigeye]) well it would have been obvious, or even riding a Lawnmower, I could have taken the chance to embarrass myself.

I wave to any Land Rover vehicle. No probs with other Def owners and those with older Disco's. The Dahlings in their late Disco's, Evoques, Rangies and Velars are something else though. Some stare ahead like robots. Sometimes I might get a reaction such as a quick glance. Older dad 'n mum dahlings are good: "Dahling, who was that person in that green jeep thing who waved at us? I won't go into the debate about the new Defender, other that to say - the world has moved on, I can't wait to see one in the flesh. :)

I appreciate the dilemma - I had the same one when they started calling Rangerovers and their illegitimate offspring Landrovers! I don't have strong feelings about the term "Defender" - I've never owned one! I drive "proper" Landrovers.

Just been reading a review on the latest Suzuki Jimny, and am sorely tempted, as they seem to have taken the place of the old series Landies, and target the market for which the series were intended. Which Landrover or no other, seems to do nowadays. But I suppose I would only get waves from other Jimnys then! Although I would wave to a Jimny from my Landie now, they deserve it, they are cool.

Hi Travelrover,
We have a place in Mount Wilson that we spend time at as much as we can. So we drive the Bells Line frequently. I've become familiar with the local Defenders along the road: those at Hillbilly Cider, Bilpin Burgers, the restaurant at Bilpin village and a Military with the trailer that I often see at Kurrajong Heights or North Richmond. I wave as we pass by.
The Defender to which I referred was the latest incarnation of our marque spotted as we were going to Bunnings at Lithgow. I confess I was in deep conversation with my partner discussing the shopping list when it came the other way.
I'll keep an eye out for you too!

Hi One_iota
There are a couple around Kurrajong village and Bowen mountain and a few in north Richmond, a perentie in Freemans Reach at least three 110/130’s in Glossodia two 90’s in Richmond and we have three (2 110’s and a 90) in east Kurrajong. So plenty to wave to most days.. and of course being a major east west rout across the mountains there are plenty passing through..

Should I just give up and not wave at a new Defender owners assuming that they have no idea about the Defender heritage?

Bide your time, what goes around comes around.
Wait until you get waved down by one, all teary eyed & "I
don't know what to do & my old man will be furious", 'cos you are of the same breed.
While lifting the bonnet with much clicking of the tongue & the odd "Uh oh" & sucking of air through teeth, you will be in an admirable position to fill them in on the History. Then leave them to it waiting for a couple of hours for the Breakdown Service to change their flat tyre.
Job done!

Maybe we just call a 110 a “110”

The original Defender a “Defender” (90 or 110 added to the end)
And the new Defender “the Metrosexual Defender”

This avo I had a driver of a Jeep Wrangler wave to me. I don't know anyone that drives a Jeep, and given my Defender is NSW RFS Orange, with a Red-Dot AC unit on the roof, and a carry me camper box covered in solar panels - it cannot be mistaken for any other vehicle. It's unique.
So many questions ...
Do wrangler drivers wave to each other? and the driver thought I was a wrangler?
Do they just wish they had a defender?
Is there confusion in the community about the tribal laws of Defender ownership?
Most of my driving life has been in a VW Kombi, or a Defender - both of which have very strong 'waving' cultures ... but I've never had a wave from another brand. Confused.

I suspect those driving on 22" alloy wheels shod with Pirellis won't.
However, those driving on 18" steel wheels with Duratrac tyres probably will.
