There's a few more heand gestures I've been known to use... usually reserved for bad drivers

That's not vert nice.

I wave at everybody, even old derros pushing prams full of junk.

Yesterday, at White Bay I got a wave from a JEEP  Then Imediatly following, an Indus 90. Phew!!! :o

I turned out of your Street onto the main road and almost immediately passed a white 130 duel cab with a tray back. I waved like mad but I think the bloke was dead. Should' be driving in that state.

Back home yesterday after a couple of nights away and got a very enthusiastic wave from a Disco 3 or 4 owner between Glen Innes and Armidale. I was in the 130.

The world is going crazy!

OK, OK, I'll give you an explanation. Remember I drive a Keswick green D90.

Driving home from Townsville today (to mackay) was just driving along minding my own business when some random guy in a 4x4 (think it was a toyota) waved to me! So I think, yea ok no worries, he was confused or something. Got a bit further down the road and there's a bus driver waves. very odd... o well maybe he thought he knew who I was. I keep going, a little while later there is some roadworks! slowing down behind the cue, and the lollie pop person turns the sign and starts gesturing the line through. When he/she gets to me they stop waving through and give me a wave, then as the next car comes he/she starts gesturing cars through again. So that's odd, I don't know anyone who works for mainroads but ok, I waved back.

Just when you thought that it's got as good as it can get, there is a Land cruiser towing a massive caravan coming the other way further on, and he waves!

I have NO idea whats going on... was starting to think I should stop and check that there wasn't a dead animal stuck in my bullbar or something.

BTW, the whole round trip on the highway from Mackay to Townsville and back i didnt' see a defender. IN townsville was a bit different....

Pretty sure I saw the very last one for sale in Townsville while I was there too. It's the only defender left at the dealership :( I soooo wanted to take it home to keep mine company.

I tried to convince my brother to buy a new 90 to replace his old Jeep Wrangler. He didn't do it because the 90 was too tall to fit in the single garage of his townhouse.

He ended up buying a new Wrangler, and it is a little different shaped to his old one, only to find it also is too tall to fit. What an opportunity lost :(

I got my D90 knowing that it wouldn't fit in the carport. Isn't that why they invented angle grinders?

Hey Debruiser, the same has started happening to me! Yesterday a bloke in hi-vis jumped out of his newish hilux and gave me a wave and a nod. A few days ago another tradie waved as he passed in his navara. And today, a wave from a LC 200 driver and a quizzical look from a road works stop sign holder fella who asked "is that one of the last ones?"

I reckon the Defender wave is catching on, there's been so much press about end of Defender. There's growing respect out there for the icon...soon it will be a Mexican wave!

Hi all,

I have noticed that fellow defender owners don't seem to be waving to each other as much as they did in the past. Especially puma owners, and the worst "offenders" were in Victoria. Come on guys, thats one of the things that set us apart from the others! who cares about Jap 4x4s. And discos-Dime a dozen. But Defenders, its like a club within a club. So come on guys lets get the rage back.

Any thoughts?

Nino.
I'm not sure if someone has already asked/answered this question - If I own a Defender but I'm not sitting in it, let's say I'm on the footpath, should I still wave at a Defender going past? I'd like to, but it could be awkward.

I dont know the rules for this one BUT!

- if I'm driving another car I have accidentally waved... and received the "who the, are you?" look, so normally no I don't.

- If standing on the footpath, I sometimes wave but normally that just ends in an awkward moment too...

On the flip side, if I'm the one driving and someone on the footpath/nondefender waves to me then I will wave back just in case. :)

I tend to just give a 'thumbs up' when I am on the foot path.

I can't help but wave when I am in the wife's Rodeo - it's becoming automatic to wave no matter which car I am in :D - naturally I don't often get a wave back.

Flipside - when in the Defender I'll wave to anyone that cares to wave at me no matter what they are driving

I just wave at any Defender no matter what, if walking, driving my own Deefer, driving my wife's car, heck I'd even do it from the back of a camel if that scenario ever presented itself. Half the fun can be the bewildered look of the other driver :D

I'm a big supporter of the Left handed wave, in juxtaposition to the Right-handed wave as suggested in the above pic.

As a defender driver with a snorkel, the normally svelte lines of the A-Pillar are encumbered by the breathing apparatus, hence a greater-than-normal risk of the wave not getting through...

I've only been a Defender owner for 3 weeks, but I've waved at more people in those weeks than I have in the last 3 years. With very few exceptions, everyone I've seen has returned them too.

On Saturday I got a triple fist pump from a very enthusiastic 130 owner, I felt my wave was hopelessly insufficient by comparison.

Love this club

The pic is a left hand drive so a right hand wave works best. Opposite here.

Haven't had an opportunity to wave to another Defender for AGES, but yesterday, when driving from Mount Gambier to Geelong, had a very nice SWB metallic grey Puma pull up behind us near Winchelsea.

Was particularly impressed with what appeared to be LED headlights and was keen to know more, but as he didn't seem to have CB radio, could not have a conversation.

He followed us for quite a few kilometers, then passed us with a hearty wave.
Thanks for making my day! (whoever you were).

And the waves kept coming up that way today. Heading home from Beacon Hill, I stopped, at the lights where Babbage swings into Boundary at Roseville, behind a Corris 110 with a Gnarly looking Yammy powered Bucket Racer by Deus ex machina, hanging on a bracket at the back. Cool.

I'll be taking the inland route from Melbourne to Brisbane this Friday night...

Just beware the dreaded Wallan services if you're not familiar with it: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/120574-static-electricity-puma-immobilised.html

Enjoy the Newell, one of our fav drives on the black stuff. Greenbah camp ground (http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/camping-and-accommodation/campgrounds/Greenbah-campground) in the Goobang National Park is a great place to overnight on the way up/back.

Was at Supercheap Auto Springwood this afternoon and came out to find another, very tidy 110 parked next to me. Belongs to Mike who came out soon after - and we had a good chat.

First Defender I've seen in the flesh since I got mine, and a nice one it is. Liked the cream/off-white color - classy.

Then saw him coming the opposite direction 10 minutes later along another road - cue the Defender Wave.

I think I may have broke some kind of defender wave record today. I was driving my orkney grey 90 around Newcastle and then up the new england to Tamworth this afternoon.
All up I slung a few waves out the front window, and a good few one arm salutes out the drivers window.
Notable waves were:
Black Puma 110 with a 'sea shepherd' sticker on the rear window (shortland esplanade Newcastle, 11am)
Blue Td5 (I think) shortland esplanade, 11.01 :p
About 3 different defenders along the Hunter Expressway - a few 110's and a 130 dual cab (4pm-4.30)
A black 110 with a white roof in Murrurundi (approx 6.30)

I have had an occasional Disco (older models) wave at me - and they get a return wave.

Must say - I am such a laid back guy that anyone can wave at me and I'll wave back - no matter what they are driving

I can never read the plates fast enough at 100km/h, but if I caught it I'd probably recognise who it was.

That sounds about right Mitch, I was pretty happy to see the 90 amongst a sea of Hilux's and Semi's!

We left Toowoomba at 5.30am with a 9 month old baby so stopped every 2hrs to keep everyone sane. Loooooong day but the Defender and the baby behaved themselves!

I'm in the Hawkesbury and always wave, but there certainly are some newer vehicles that just give you a blank stare. My theory is if you wave at them often enough they might get the message.

Having said that there are a couple of new 110's that give the full out the window wave, smile and toot.

All good

Bloke on the south eastern freeway (cough tollway) heading out of the city around 4pm.
Cant remember the colour of his rig, it was last week and my memory doesnt recall that well. (too many beers).

But, I do remember he was hogging the right lane, had a funny hat on and as I waved at him passing on the inside, I spot a dog, it looked like a dalmatian, but I couldve been wrong again.

Finally got home, did the shopping etc, then I see him again in Caulfield.
Waved at him again.

Ive got the weird Havana 110 (cross between grey/brown/greenish).

Defenders out in force this morning, green 130 with a canvas back on Richmond road about 9am, same 130 on his way back this arvo.

A grey and a black 110 at the same time, and one more 110 which I can't remember the colour.

No waves as I was on my bike but it was good to see them all in such close proximity.

Regarding signature waves for a brand or marque, that creator of most things mediocre, overrated and over priced- you know them as the maker of Canned Loser, Play-doe and Rollux- tried to claim a nonchalant raise of the finger off the steering wheel as its own. Sort of like them claiming how clever they were putting double overhead cams in their engines years after Jag mastered it. The wave was an integral part of its rigorous testing for suitable drivers of the Rollux in one of their (admittedly very good) advertising campaigns. The ad showed the prospective buyers going through many trials and tribulations to attain the keys to one (I would've thought owning one was trial and tribulation enough) and having attained that coveted position it was "a mark of achievement to carry on that tradition and honour". It showed the correct wave- so similar to a proper Landrover wave as to infringe copyright- and then a Rollux candidate with an inane grin and a happy wave failing to pass. I thought he was a perfect candidate for a Rollux as he had the blank vacant look along with a bewildered stare the same as most people get when told how dear optional air conditioning is on top of the inflated price for their chosen wheeled mediocrity.
The irony of that is that out here around Cloncurry 80% of people wave as they pass regardless of chariot of choice, but if there was to be a representative of those who are most likely not to wave it's the Rollux steering wheel attendant.
Sadly there aren't a lot of Landrovers out here of any model but those I have seen are pretty enthusiastic with their salutations- Disco, Rangie, Defenders and the Series. I haven't spied an Evoque or Freelander so don't know if it extends to them. Mt Isa, only 120 kms up the road, has a few more enlightened owners and they seem willing to wave and even talk about their vehicle given the chance.
While it is a little heartwarming out here to wave to everyone it takes a while to refrain from doing it as you near the coast as the looks of bewilderment get more and more frequent as you wave to everyone as you enter more populated towns. And then again, even the wave out here is suffering a drop off from too many city folk coming out in fly-in fly-out positions and not engaging with their local community. That's sad.

Got 2 waves in 2minutes this morning! Macca's lights in Mackay! 2 very nice looking defenders, one with a female driver! (not that females can't drive defenders or anything like that....) I don't normally see many defenders round, but 2 within a couple hundred meters is unheard of! It made my day. :D

People here in Melbourne tend to be a bit zoned out and focused I find so it's sometimes hard to get a wave. I drove alongside a 110 in Melbourne the other day turning right onto Flemington road near the entrance to the Tulla and gave him a toot as I went by. Scared the living daylight savings out of him I reckon ha ha. Shows you how much people check the mirrors as I'd been stalking him for a while :wasntme::p

Managed to exchange a wave in the dark tonight. All I could see was a dark Defender shaped outline with a light, hand shaped patch in the windscreen go past. Hopefully my wave was seen back. As soon as I could see (or sense) it was a Defender my hand went up without thinking, its become a reflex action now.

A couple of nights ago I was flashed on the M2 as I pulled in in front of a white 110. Returned that with a flash of the hazards.

Cheers,
Jon

Saw 4 or 5 defenders pretty sure they all waved! Saw LOTS of those funny Ranger rover/discovery thingos too.... but that's a different thread! hahaha

BTW, I was the Keswick 90 towing a No5 w/kayaks on top.

And a note, if your going to Mount Warning, there is a warning at the bottom that the hill is not appropriate for towing... IF you have anything bigger than a 90 and a no5 dont tow up there.... you'll have a hell of a time turning it round in the carpark - it's full and there is bugger all room.
