Yes that wave is alive and well in Townsville for Defenders drivers. Wives & GF passangers often hang over and wave like mad...great friendships in the making.
Must say very seldom get waves...or even a nod... from Discovery or Sport owners...even when driving a similar vehicle myself.

Went for a drive today up to the Cheviot Tunnel near Yea and got a wave from a 130. Then on the loop to Healesville and back via Yarra Glen got another wave from a 110.

So the wave is still going strong in Vic. :D

Got about 5 waves today I believe. Only 1 didnt wave back cause he didnt see me...

1 from a 130 towing a boat in nowra

1 from a blue and white 110 on my way to hyams beach

1 from a white td5 extreme (a bit of an enthusiastic wave too!)

2 from a pastel green 110 with dual finish alloys (vic plates) going the same direction as me on the hume. Did a 'thank you' signal flash as well.

and saw an orkney gray defender with boost wheels on hume heading towards goulburn at about 6pm. Waved but he was behind some trees by that point. i only noticed it was a defender because of his parker lights. lol

Hmmm, this thread also got me thinking... I won't own a Defender until late this year or early next year... so any Defender owners on the Sunshine Coast who may see a tall bloke with a shaved head wandering around the vicinity of your parked car with an iPhone, don't panic. It's probably me sneaking snaps of how you have your vehicle accessories set-up. I saw a very nice 110 wagon (white) near JB Hi Fi in Maroochydore on the weekend. Bullbar, winch, driving lights, sliders, tow bar, Hannibal roof rack... and hula girl on the dash :)

Oh, I also wave to any Defenders that I see, but they probably don't notice as my wife and I are in a black subaru forester :p

Cheers,
Nige

There aren't many occassions when I don't get a wave in Canberra which is very reassuring.

Just on a tour round tassie at the moment. didn't see one going down the whole of the west coast (beautiful and isolated piece of Australia), 2 south of Hobart, index finger solute from farmer with a load of pigs in a td5 ute and a lady in a blue 110 who gave me whole hand wave. Today was the the best both of us had the over excited wave with the huge smile to boot, thanks white 110 td5 with a camper trailer about half way down the east coast today made my day

i love the wave :) and i always wave to other landie owners when i drive past, not sure they see me half the time as i cannot get window down fast whilst driving as only got the one hand to use, and its a long way to the buttons, so if anyone ever drives past me, i DO wave, i really do :)

That was just awesome!!! Great timing! And it totally made not only my day but also the workmate who I was picking up (due to the rain we had just had) as I explained to her how Defenders drivers were a friendly lot and always waved at each other... of course we got to work and she was so excited and couldn't wait to tell everyone about the 'Defender tradition'...

Thank you.. :)

I have the same problem.. my windows are also tinted with what I suspect is a 'slightly illegal darkness'.. and I'm always trying to get the window down in time to at least stick my fingers out and 'wiggle' so people know I haven't ignored them.. the bonus is that doing it this way you soon get very adept at spotting Defenders on the road.. I reckon I can spot one now at 900 metres with one eye closed and the other on traffic..

My Deefa is a weekender and I dont always get the wave on the highway as there is often too many lanes between me the other one on the other side of the M1. So not everyone sees each other.

I always see more during the week when I'm in my work ute and when I wave I get strange looks. At least I wave.

Even think I waved at Sue once near the IGA at Yatala along Peachy Road, one like it anyway.

I get a great kick of doing the wave and getting them back.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the silver F350 (coming out of the workplace on the corner?..) because I used to drive a F250 and usually admire them when I pass one.. Is the 110 on the same road as the shops? I'll keep an eye out for the others too so keep on waving lol :)

Boomer lives on a small acerage at Gaven near Pacific Pines, when I'm up your way I'm either at Hanson, Holcim or Boral Quarry drilling holes to blow a bit more of the hill up from all sides:D My mate is in the F350 more than me now and all the gear and utes are based at Nerang. I'm there all this week in the Bravo after that who knows, I move around a bit. There is a bunch of us at Numinbah this weekend camping, GCLRO if you feel like a day trip to meet some more Deefa owners. Loading Boomer now and waiting for SHMBO to get out of bed. Just thought i would add my bit about this whole waving thing. Having had my Defender since January i am happy to so that every Defender i have seen in Perth, both new and have, have given me a wave. I now look forward to when i see another Defender to i can share a wave with a person similarly minded to my self, with a special appreciation for the car. Owners of other Land Rovers models however are a different story, with not one wave initiation (LOL :p) or response.

My kids love defenders, and especially the wave. we have several cars and we get a little depressed when we drive past a defender in our corolla and cant wave. The kids then berate me for not taking the defender to the shops. Ha Ha! Here in perth i have only been Unwaived twice in 6 years, probably someone borrowing a mates defender to do some real work.

Sorry to all those who waved at Boomer this week near Beenleigh. My mechanic had to do some test drives and said he was waved at everywhere. So it was not me who did not wave back. Got some great waves a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Millmerran and back.

I work in the unbelievably tossy Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. When I wave (which I always do) to a fellow defender owner, I swear I can actually see their index finger twitch in anticipation of a little micro wave, but it rarely happens. Waaay too uncool to be friendly in that neck of the woods. It's so weird.

Great couple of toots on the horn from a 110 in Mt Pilot State Park today, made my wife's day! Not sure if whoever it was saw us waving back but your timing was awesome, she had just struggled on one of the side tracks before Kangaroo Crossing and was a bit "stupid car, you drive"... that friendly toot lifted her spirits and she was stoked, end up driving another 150+km before she let me have a go :D

Always wave to any square land rover the others are a different breed ( sorry just the way it is ) 20 years driving the box tells you where the waves come from. In saying that most people wave regardless of vehicle type above the 26th parallel.

That's a couple of months I have had my Defender now and plenty of waves have been coming my way....

got a wave the other day from a lady, maybe in her 40's driving a green 110 in Kalamunda, I was surprised as she came out of a junction and was changing gears but the hand still went up to give me a wave...

The wife makes fun of me cause she says that every time I get a wave I have a big stupid smile on my face, I don't care...I love it

My wife is driving the Defender as her car is in the dealers for repairs. She doesn't like driving the Defender usually but as I'm away she's had no choice. Anyway she sent me this email I thought I'd share.

"I got a defender wave!!!
I'm enjoying driving your car actually, getting used to it really quickly. Was very chuffed that I finally saw another one to wave to - I was losing hope then just as I came back through brookside I got it."

So thank you to whoever you are, I think I've just lost my car :p

Have seen quite a few LR's recently, and today whilst driving back along the coast from Melb down towards Mordialloc, spotted a lot of RR's, they were looking quite hard at us, so nodded to a few then waved at the last one. Not sure if they appreciated the acknowledgment or not ;)

Here in the Hunter I reckon I get about a 3 in 5 return on waves which isn't too bad at all. I'd say at least 1 in 5 doesn't wave due to not seeing me in time or distracted....that's probably my average on return waves.

So if a 130 trayback in the Hunter doesn't wave at you, I just didn't see you in time...:D

Hi Rick

I unfortunately have to agree with you - they seem to have become a bit of a fashion accessory for cashed-up Gen-Y's with absolutely no idea (no offence intended to the younger enthusiasts among us)!

I suppose that's also the reason there are so many almost brand new ones traded back at various other brand's dealers - Some Muppet working out too late that just because it has the wheelbase of a RAV doesn't mean its going to drive like one in the traffic!!!:D

Cheers,

I gave Chris Bowden and his 130 a wave as I left, after I picked up some goodies from him and helped hook up his van.

He had been camping at Lake Cluny with some other members of the LROCT and I had caught up with them yesterday to have a bit of a drive around the area.

I was driving with a friend the other day. He is keen on the defender and I was giving him an honest appraisal of the good and the bad etc.
Then a 90 passes on the far side of the street giving a wave- I wave back.
"Who is that?" my mate asks.
"I have no idea" I reply
"Why does he wave then?"
"Well.... we are all apart of one team" I reply

(5 minutes down the road same thing happens with 130)

my mate says," I want one"

Sounds familiar as mine drives a Patrol (and now a Citroen)

As I've said before, she reckons the Landy wave is just a reassurance mechanism for when the car breaks down....so cruel these partners can be :lol2:

Since she started driving the Citroen last week I told her she must wave at all Citroens, it was the done thing too, moreso if it's an old DS, CX, etc. otherwise they'd think she was just another modern trendy driving around in a glorified Peugeot

In the mid 1990's a friend had a land rover series 3 and I asked why did everyone else with a Landy wave at him? He half jokingly said it is because you never know when you will break down and need help or spare parts so pays to be nice to each other. When I got my '78 Series 3 last year I anticipated greatly the wave. I was not disappointed as all Defender and Series owners would wave or wave back. Discos and Rangies forget about it. With my 2nd Land Rover being a Puma and a daily drive I don't get any less waves. My wife thinks it's hysterical... I know deep down though she is regretting buying that new Pajero Exceed last year.

There seems to be heaps of defenders here in Mackay. I go to Rocky and Townsville often and am always disappointed because there never seems to be as many around. OR maybe Mackay is just full of posers in their Defenders and everywhere else they are off getting dirty as you suggest.

I'll throw some evidence here that the wave is in in decline . . . I posted this the other day on another thread and probably sits better here . . . .

So . . . .with a return journey from Quinns Rocks to Mirrabooka planned, it was an ideal time for the kids to play "Spot the Deefer" en route.

With the rules clearly explained to the kids that if you see a Landy, shout out and throw a wave in as "thats the rules of the road when you're a Landy owner". We take our parental responsibility seriously and fully understand that our kids need to play their part in the social connectedness of being a Landy owner.

Well much to all of our surprise there were loads of Landies out and about. A selection of Deefers, Disco's and Rangies. Lots of shout outs from around our 110 . . . . There's one, here's another and so on . . . . . . .

As we headed south a White 110 heading north on Wanneroo Road near the light horse trail gave us our first acknowledgment and a firm wave back to our flash of lights and thumbs up . . .. . Great. Our two kids were made up and a friend of one our kids was amazed . . . . "You actually wave at other people you don't even know?". . . . . . Err yes ! Welcome to the world of Landrover.

Then it all took a turn for the worse and even our visitor was becoming less convinced that our story of waving to other Landies was nothing more than a load of cock and bull.

2 more Deefers (purple ish 110 crossing Ocean Reef road heading east and a silver 90 heading south just like us) 3 or 4 Disco's and a Rangie . . . .disappointing did not respond to a wave not just from driver and passenger but 3 excited kids in the rear wishing for that gesture of comradery to prove that the Landy wave existed.

The most disappointing was a silver 90 heading south on Wanneroo road . . .picture the scene . . . Spotted in the distance . . . .90 on the inside lane . . .pedal to the metal . . . Kids getting more excited as we reel the 90 in our sights. A change of lane and we move to the outside lane and slowly coast past the 90 . . . . A couple of beeps on the horn and 3 kids in the back waving like mad . . . . .

"They're not waving back dad" . . . . Surely not . . . .I beeped the horn twice . . .the kids were waving like they were being kidnapped and seeking help . . . . . But no . . . It wasn't to be . . .the opportunity to convince our visitor had passed. The look of defeat amongst the passengers was clearly evident, slowly finding other things to look for and talk about had overtaken the "Landy rules of the road game" . . . .Deefer spotting was over . . . For today !

But tomorrow we start again and as Deefer owners who are used to the same tradition being used in the UK, we will endeavour to carry on the "wave".

Come on folks . . . . . .give us a wave . . . . If not for me . . . . . Do it for the kids

Well I can happily report a near 100% success rate on our recent trip. The only wave we didn't get back was a couple of blokes in a 130 in fluro vests who looked like they were going to work (i.e. miserable) so we let them off with a warning.

Wave rate is pretty high around the Newcastle area. Got 1 this morning on the way to Singleton. A nice black 110 obviously just finished his night shift at the pits heading home through Branxton.

On another car forum I was a part of they had a thread called Spot the ( insert brand of car ). They would state where they spotted it and few other minor details. Usually that car owner would jump onto the same thread to state they had also spotted the other car, it was another way of the owners re introducing themselves.

I would have waved at the 110 SW at the Domain today near the Art Gallery but it was parked.
It did stand out though, with its "AULRO" number plate.

Kris

As Mrs HH correctly observed it was mine: I went there to see the Francis Bacon exhibition.

Consider this a wave in return :D.

I usually travel with an accomplished wave surfer...Sal usually catches them before me.

For those that don't "do" the defender wave, or need some pointers.

"The Wave"
If you drive a Series Landy or a Defender, you know about “The Wave”.
“The Wave” is your rolling connection to the Landrover brother & sisterhood, but is there a special secret to this wave?

When you started driving did you seek out a wave master and perhaps copy theirs, or did you develop one of your own?
Have you ever wondered if you’re wave is appropriate?
Do you wonder if the wave you’re flashing is politically correct, or old and outdated?

Unfortunately, wave training is not covered in the basic or advanced driving lessons.

"A secret society?"
Many drivers believed there was a secret wave society formed around 1947 when that first prototype rolled out of that shed, but there wasn't.

"The origins"
It all started, one day late in the summer of 1948, when Maurice Wilks passed by Spencer Wilks and they waved. Well, another Landrover owner saw the two "Kings of Landys" doing this and thought this was a Landrovering necessity and the tradition was born.

"The different waves"
The waving tradition continued on through the years and became haphazard.
There were Landy owners doing the “Bye Grandma Wave”, others doing the "Howdy Wave" and still others doing the extremely feminine “Princess Wave".

"WHAT_LS to the rescue"
In 1958 with the release of the Series II, and after several years of these, image destroying gestures, a group of crusty old Landy owners decided to put some proper waving rules in place and formed the Wave Hard And True - Landy Society. Abbreviated: WHAT-LS or "wattles"

To wave or not to wave, that is the question.

We've all faced that critical mass state when we felt obligated to wave but then became unsure.
The worrying starts and then there’s that overwhelming feeling of guilt.

"Guide Lines"
Well, worry no more; here are some general waving rules to help guide you :
1) Freeway; unnecessary,
2) in a curve; unnecessary
3) in the rain or at night; unnecessary
4) on a mellow two lane; proper.
5) a highway with little traffic; proper
6) A rally, unnecessary
7) in traffic, proper.

There are, however, times when not waving is just down right rude. So if you’re not a jackass, when you are presented with “The Wave” you should, if at all possible, reciprocate.

If it’s the proper place and time and you receive no reciprocal wave, don’t get your panties in a bunch and think you've just passed a jackass, because there are some acceptable reasons.

These reasons are as follows:
1) you weren't seen,
2) Gear selection,
3) a head nod was substituted.

There are 5 basic waves
1) the right-handed forward wave.
2) the right-handed low wave,
3) the right-handed high wave
4) the right-handed out of the window wave
5) the left-handed I've just changed gear wave,

The variations of these waves are as varied as the Landy owners & the Landy's they drive, but there are some basic rules.

"Basic Rules"
1) Right-handed forward wave is an all around general wave. The arm can be either fully or partially extended with no more than a 10 degree angle higher or lower than the shoulder. The palm must be facing the oncoming driver in either a horizontal or vertical position and a full palm must be shown. It is suggested you present the hand in a relaxed state, as flattening it will make you look like a dork.

The classic variations of the peace sign or thumbs up are also acceptable. If practiced, this is one of the easiest waves to master and will work with all Landy's. If for some reason you can’t get this wave to work, you will probably have serious problems engaging or even finding diff lock and should immediately sell your Landy before you cause yourself anymore embarrassment!

2) Right-handed low wave, sometimes called the classic wave. The arm is partially extended and the hand kept down just above the steering wheel with the extension of either one, two, three or five fingers. The direction of the palm is also critical to the look and feel of this wave. The palm must either face the other driver or face the road.

A classic variation of the finger positioning is throwing a peace sign or thumbs up. To low wave with the palm facing up or back and/or with the use of 4 fingers is telling the Landrovering community at large that you are either new or inept. If you have a series landy or Defender and can’t get this wave to work for you, then consider the Right-Handed forward wave or selling your Landy.

3) Right-handed high wave is a variation of the typical wave seen made by kings and kids alike. Mostly used by drivers with soft tops. The elbow is kept even or slightly lower than shoulder height. The elbow should be bent at about a 75 – 85 degree angle with a slight forward angling of the forearm. The palm must be facing the oncoming driver and the hand can either remain still or the use of a side to side motion is acceptable. This wave has been proven very useful when you have a loose watchband. It is suggested you present the hand in a relaxed state, as once again, flattening it will make you appear to be a dork.

The classic variations of the peace sign or thumbs up are frowned upon when using this type of wave. it’s a bit too over the top. Important: This should never, ever be used when still holding the steering wheel. Warning of possible injury: Do not use this type of wave if your in a hard top or a soft top with the roof still on. You will appear aloof, snobbish and everyone will hate you! If you have a medical condition or feel you must use this type of wave, get a soft top and don’t be a dick about it. There are rules!

4) Right-handed out of the window wave. This is an occasional use wave. Typically seen being employed during the summer months. The arm maybe fully or partially extended in fact very similar to the right-handed forward wave. But on no account must the arm be too high or the hand moved from side to side. Done correctly the general message being sent is “I am cool and damn it, It's hot, isn't it?”. This wave if not executed correctly can be uncool. This lack of coolness can cause a temporary condition known as “Dickishness” which can be instantly healed by passing a Landy giving the right hand forward wave. If this wave results in pain, then you haven't opened the window first!

5) Left-handed wave. This wave is solely used by drivers who are caught short seeing a Landy just as they change gear because, let’s face it, what the hell else can they do in that position? A flashed wave, is almost imperceptible due to the speed of the wave and the Landy. To execute this wave one must slightly raise the left hand above the level of the dash board, no more than 3 or 4 inches, show the palm and return to the steering wheel. This entire motion must be fluid and executed in under three seconds. You must learn all the intricacies of this wave before you take your first drive. If you don’t, they will know you’re a newbie. The only way to avoid this lame wave stigma is by doing something crazy like driving while naked. If you don’t get arrested, that’s a big plus!

The last and probably most important part of the wave is the hand you’re using to wave. You’ll want to care for that hand because without it; How do you expect to wave? Get some of the best hand cleansing soaps and lotions you can afford to clean that hand and protect it.

When approaching another Landy always remember to maintain the rule of "The Wave", you never know who's watching

Had 2 good waves in past week. A 110 merged into my lane from a turn off and seeing us let traffic pass so we could catch up and swap waves. Today was on the 2 lane motorway cruising at 120kmh and came up to an older 110 so exchanged waves as went pass and dropped speed and jumped into his lane so we were ina very modest convoy of 2 Landys.

I have to admit that whilst engaged in city driving I have on several occasions failed to spot on coming Defenders until it is too late to engage in a friendly wave. Luckily my wife frequently spots them from the passenger seat and waves like a crazed banshee to make up for my lack of observation... I would think with the volume of traffic in cities this may well be the cause of wave failure as opposed to poor Defender etiquette...

Believe Me

It is still there, driving through Charters Towers today, I waved to a new Defender 110 Driver from my old, TD5 110 Wagon.

The bloke waved back, he seemed a little hesitant at first.

Maybe he has not had the Vehicle long.

Also ,the other day, spoke to a mature lady alighting from her husbands 1994 110 wagon, in a Townsville shopping centre.

We ended up having a 10 minute, chat about this subject and her Landy as well

She indicated that, she always felt comfortable around other landrover owners.

But then again as diverse a people, as we are.

I still think, we are a fairly decent lot! and quite respectful of other people to I strongly suspect.

Kind Regards

I saw a new variation about a month back in one of the sugar cane towns somewhere around Rockhampton. A 110 tray back was coming the other way so I gave a big out-the-window wave... Nothing. I was watching for a lifted hand or finger, but it wasn't to be.

Instead, I see the driver's vent flapping up and down. Waving with the vent! I had a good chuckle at that.

The defender wave is far from dead, just remember that enthusiasm is contagious.

I stumbled across this description of the "Landy Wave" and thought it worth sharing........

"SMILE AND WAVE"

Once in a while, every two or three months, I turn into the sort of person other people don’t want to make eye contact with. But by the time they realise this, it’s too late. You see, I wave at cars. Not all of them. Just a select few. And it’s not just the cars I am waving at, it’s the drivers.
There’s nothing subtle about it. I stare at them across the busy lines of traffic, like a love struck admirer, or that creepy stalker from accounting at a company picnic, until they unwittingly make eye contact. Then I grin like a loon, and wave. To add to the general air of quiet sanity, I then proceed to get washed over by a wave of embarrassment, reddening like a tomato and peering shamefacedly down at the steering wheel until my new special friend has driven away.

I often wonder what it must be like for the other party in one of these exchanges; you’re driving along, minding your own business when you happen to glance at the car next to you. You stop. The driver is staring at you like a cat about to leap on a pigeon. You freeze. The driver grins, and waves at you. You desperately search the recesses of your mind for some spark of recognition. Did you go to school with him? Meet him at a party? Is he somehow connected to your work?
Just in case, you start to wave back. But something weird has happened. He’s not waving any more. He’s not even looking at you. He’s staring at the road in front of him like he’s trying to set it on fire with his mind. His ears are glowing an unnatural red. And so he sits, frozen, until the lights change. You drive off, and never see him again. But that night, you check twice to make sure you locked the front door, and you sleep with your phone pre-dialled to 911.

My behaviour is, of course, completely reasonable. This all happens simply because I drive one of these.

It’s a Land Rover. A Land Rover Defender. And the day you slip behind the wheel of a Land Rover Defender, you join a secret society. A brotherhood of the road. You are friends with every other proper Land Rover driver on the road. :)
This is a Land Rover Discovery.
It’s a very nice car. But it’s not a proper Land Rover. If you drive a Discovery, you don’t get to be one of the brotherhood. You don’t get to take part in the rituals. And rituals there are. If you happen to park next to each other, you have to stop and chat about your cars. You have to bolt a spade to the side of your car. You have to collectively disparage Toyota Land Cruisers, even though they are better made. But most of all, out on the road you have to wave at each other.

You can choose your own style. And you can vary it with your mood. In the mornings, before the day has taken its toll, I’m a hand raiser. In the afternoons, I’m cooler about it. I lift a finger or two. It doesn’t matter what you are. You can be a puppydog-enthusiatic, hand-out-the-open-window guy. You can be super-cool, a nodder, acknowledging your brothers with an almost imperceptible inclination of the head. You can be smiler, a thumbs upper, a slightly creepy word-mouther.

But you must take part. It’s the rules. It’s an acknowledgement. We few. We happy few. We band of brothers. We have turned up our noses at more sensible modes of transport. We can drive over mountains, chewing up boulders and spitting out dust, but we can’t fit into underground parking lots. We can ford turbulent rivers, tyres clawing a path through the murky depths, but we can’t do a u-turn in a two lane road. We have to sell family members to pay for the fuel, and get used to the idea that the temperamental buggers can drive across Borneo, but might not make it through the afternoon school run.

We are happier for it. We have not bought cars. We have bought a dream, and while our pockets may be lighter, our lives are richer. And this must be acknowledged among ourselves. Because everything we do feels like this;
Which is all well and good. But once in a while, every two or three months, I borrow my wife’s car. And I forget I’m in it. And then I become the dork in the Honda CRV who can’t stop himself from waving at strangers. But only strangers in Land Rovers. At least I’m a dork with taste.

Made the trip back down to Vic, stopping in Sydney to see a mate. First wave returned in redhead beach near Newcastle from an amused td5 owner as my two passengers and myself waved madly. Made our morning driving :)

Doing my bit for the wave in inner eastern Melbourne suburbs (deep behind range and new disco lines) lots of posh mums wondering what on earth the crazy man in the silver 110 puma is doing. I've got Queensland plates on till march, if I see anyone I'll wave! Daily drive to notting hill along dandenong road and ferntree.

Apologies in advance to the ones missed in traffic. I'm often distracted trying not to run over shiny Mercedes or Lexus drivers etc. who think it is their right to merge whenever they like..

Happy waving!

I only got the defer in April, so it hasn't seen much rain yet. Stupid A/C is playing up though so have to get that fixed or I'll be stuck driving with all the windows open forever! you know how the heat is here.

There's lots of white rigs here

I'm putting up a partition between the rear seats and
load area before I head up north. AC doesn't have to
work so hard and can cool down a smaller volume.
The 110 is just to cavernous for the little AC in the defender for
NQ conditions.

Funny how it rolls somedays. Got snobbed by a series driver opposite me at the lights this morning. I find that odd as he has no idea what I have in the shed. But then again also at the lights in the afternoon by a black 110 this time.
On the up side though, two big smiling happy faces with energetic waves from two other Defenders throughout the day. So about right 50%

Haha, thats funny.

I feel sometimes if your car looks new or if it doesnt fit a certain criteria of styling then most old school defenders will look the other way. But you get 100% success rate from similar new looking vehicles. It's almost like you have to do your time or something.

Not so much a wave story but I found it humerous.

Took my 90 up to Townsville for it's 20k service and got given a Volvo S60 as a (can't spell this morning) loan car to drive. While driving the 90 I saw maybe 1 Defender over 400kms! got in the Volvo and it seemed every Defender in Townsville was out driving, but had to restrain myself from waving so that I didn't look a fool waving at 4x4's in my little Volvo.

On a side note, if you have 60k laying around go get a Volvo S60, they are nice. :D in fact too nice, I was almost tempted to swap it for the 90.

My thoughts exactly, none of this bull**** about - "I'll only wave if the rig fits a certain criteria" if somebody has bought and is driving a defender, it's not for the comfort or refinement, it's for a purpose and for all the charm, charisma and idiosyncrasies that come with it.

Over the last few days of travelling up the coast, I was becoming hesitant as the waves are few and far between, but after reading this post well, I'm not driving this thing for the fun of it. I'm an enthusiast, who loves spending money on seemingly endless problems, that my dearly beloved points out every time we go away.

1 300tdi HCPU ute (me)
1 300tdi 2 door tin top
1 300tdi wagon
1 200tdi wagon
1 Perentie
1 130 dual cab tray back

Beat that! They all waved ofcourse, pretty sure a couple were AULRO members. Two from QLD? The perentie and the 130 dual cab?

The wife and I are currently on tour from Perth across oz and just back from Fraser Island . We have met and waved to many Defender owners most of whom wave back . Maleny is definitely Defender wave territory but don't expect many waves returned on Fraser Island as most of the Defers are hire cars. We sat beside a yellow 90 on the freeway to brisbane side by side for 15 mins and didn't even get a glance. All the Defender owners round here are friendly enough to wave. Same as a few others on here I feel guilty if I'm daydreaming about my next trip and miss one. Have finally developed three golden rules based on my grand total of 9 months with my Defender:

1) NEVER wave at a troopy - look for the headlight positioning and fresh air vents
2) Disco's get a wave if they wave at me first (can't make them think that owning a Landy is good enough to get a Defender wave without cause  )
3) Other 90s get a full outside arm wave if I have my window down :D

Keep wavin peoples,
Sean

I've found some discos wave back but very few. You can increase your "wave back rate" with them but singling out ones with mods, I guess those are more likely to be enthusiasts.

In nearly a year of owning the D90 I've only had one Disco driver initiate a wave, but it was a very good one, in the Snowy from memory.

Hi Jimb,
Its only happened to me a couple of times - usually out west away from town. I'm convinced some disco owners have been reading this thread though because I had a silver Disco wave at me quite happily this afternoon on the drive back from work - almost missed him because it was a split second before we passed. I did a funny sorta half arm out window wave because I was so shocked - then I felt guilty for not being prepared lol.

I like Ezyrama's idea of a standard UHF call channel that we monitor - perhaps channel 40 since its sort of the standard truckie / highway call channel??? Haven't kept my UHF on normally but now after reading these comments I reckon I'll keep mine on Ch40 just in case someone says hi - don't wanna miss it

Have a great day everyone!

Look at the title of this thread. It's the Defender wave people, the DEFENDER wave. That disco/rangie lot have been trying to make it the 'Landy wave' for years but will never be successful and I'll tell you why, because to most of the people driving those 'other' Land Rovers its just a car.

By extension, also includes series and county, grandfather and father, its all family. The Defender nomenclature is only due to volume.

I have to disagree . . . . We should encourage camaraderie across the LR brand. Yes the wave is dominated by the Series through to Defender models of LR but in my humble opinion we should welcome all LR owner/drivers into our small 4x4 community and encourage the exchange of a friendly wave. 👋✋👋✋👋✋👋✋👋

gosh some of you defender drivers are landrover snobs!! not wanting to wave to us disco owners! we all own and drive a landrover :D so why should the rest of us not in deefers miss out? im waving to ALL of you in defenders, rangies, discos etc and NO ONE WAVES BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was in my sisters freelander the other day and waved to a defender and no wave back :( i get a lot of disco people dont wave as they dont understand the whole landy thing. they just have them for a tow vehicle. but that shouldnt taint the rest of us who love landrovers! i confess i was slow to wave to a nice fellow disco the other week, i was too busy looking at his tyres haha! but i did wave just after he had half gone past!

i also do not agree with the majority of the 'other lot' being just a vehicle, yes there are a large number who are that way. but there are a heck of a lot more who are not. a hell of a lot of 'other lot' owners are in here, in this thread, on the WHOLE forum! heaps at stuff like british car days, more discos on show there. so to suggest most of them only have another vehicle is just a lame excuse. not everyone can afford a defender. i cant. but i love my landy anwyays because its a landy. it still goes where yours goes. i love defenders too. so stop being too stuck up and wave to us in other landrovers!!!!!!!!! we have one common love. i always thought its the nice people that own landrovers, but i question that now if you simply wont return a wave because its not from a defender. how selfish and stuck up is that? its jsut a wave for godsake, jsut a friendly gesture from one landrover lover to another. just to say 'hey hows it going fellow landy driver, we love it too'

It's really quite complicated for simple wave.
I give the 'Defender' wave, when driving my Defender to people in other Defenders.
I give the 'Landy' wave to other Land Rover drivers when driving my Defender.
I give the 4x4 wave to people in their four wheel drives (including Land Rovers and Defenders) when I'm driving either my work ute, or wife's Patrol.
And when driving down long country roads in the middle of nowhere, I wave to anyone.

I recently was driving an Evoque for a couple of weeks and did a little experiment by waving to Defender drivers while I was out and about. Lots of surprised looks but no return waves. Are we Evoque snobs? Since I didn't get any return waves I do hope that all the drivers I waved at spent the rest of the day trying to work out who it was that waved at them ;)

.. and for the record I often drive my Hubby's Disco and always wave at Defender drivers when in it also, the return rate is a little higher in the disco though - I contribute that to the fact that its bright yellow and kind of hard to miss lol.. :)

Coming back from Gympie last Friday we were overtaken by a Disco 1 towing a camper trailer: the couple in the disco both waved enthusiastically (with thumbs up!!) as they went past!
They pulled over down the road but I had a semi on my tail so couldn't pull over to see if they were OK.
More than happy to wave to a Disco owner if they wave first:).
Cheers, martin

The Defender / Land Rover wave seems to be alive and we'll in SA.

We're running between Melb, through the back blocks of the Big Desert, through to Port Peirie (s?) and through to Port Augusta, Wyalla, and into Tumby Bay, and have had quite a few waves, both instigated by myself and them. :D

These have been from fellow Defers, Discos and one very white D4,, "Hi Mike" (Tombie) :D

It's made for a very pleasant trip, even though we've had some problems with the car,, hopefully to be fixed tomorrow at Port Lincoln.

Hey, I'm lucky if I get the wave. You not only get the wave, you also get chatted up by an attractive bikini clad chick!
Think I might change the colour of my Defender from boring (and obviously not very sexy) dark green.

Got a very enthusiastic wave from a family in a blue Defender in Mitchelton and then saw them again on Bribie. And got a wave from a red Defender on Bribie as well.
Have had a crap couple of weeks though with no waves back!

Cheers all..

Don't see many in sunny downtown Aspendale, but if we saw one whilst we were in Gracie, we would definitely wave.

Same here. Today was a good example, drove home down the Hume from Beechworth in the 90, 3.5 hour drive and 0 Defenders. Wife left 30 minutes later in VW Polo, same drive but 5 Defenders and two Perentie's she tells me + she passed a Unimog on Thurs on the way up there. Maybe I need new glasses.

When they come out with the new model and it's competing head to head with the Japs and becomes used more for the school bus, it'll only be the current crop of Defender owners who continue to wave- ya can bet ya left one on that :(

On my day trip yesterday to Bendethera (read thread of sad mystery loss of syklone pre-cleaner) we saw a few defenders. All of them exchanged waves with us :)

One Puma between Canberra and Cooma (waved), another Puma on the track into Bendethera (stopped and had a chat), Defender in the Bendethera area (all occupants waved vigorously while I was dashing to the long drop dunny for a relief stop).

Coolest of all was at the start of the day, an old fellow in a very old green series farm ute, putting slowly through a roundabout in Cooma, gave us a big smile and a full arm wave out the window. What a legend :D

Got waves from Every Defender we saw and could wave to over the long weekend.

3 (all 110's) on the way up to Bundaberg, and 4 (3 110's and 1 130) on the way down.

Also was surprised how many people seemed to like the shiny 90. Had a few people come and ask us about it over the weekend.

No waves from any other LR.

That's 5 Deefers in a 450km trip and I lost count of the Prados, Cruisers and other Jap bits and bobs (flotsam and jetsam) that litter our roads. Makes me feel kinda special, it does :)

I've come to a conclusion,,

Whilst driving through SA over the last two weeks, most drivers of other brands of, cars, 4x4's, trucks, have an incredible sense of respect for the Land Rover brand,, and in my case, Defenders :D

I've had so many waves my arms sore :D

Funny you should say that Mr Rover :D

Ummm, no :(

Don't believe I was over that way at that time of the year.
I waved at a similar unit, could have been an Oka around Wyalla/Port Augusta last week.
Although four weeks or so ago, I waved at one just outside of Melb on the Hume Hwy, but I don't think the driver saw me. Also waved at what looked like a 6x6 thingy, (very tidy looking unit) about two months ago a bit further up the Hwy on my way to Albury.

I wave at most of these types of rigs when I can. I feel like they're my big brothers :D

I picked up my defer in Cairns a few weeks back and drove it back to the a Hunter Valley over three days. I passed a couple defer owners on the road between Charters Towers and Roma that didn't do 'the wave' but I wasn't too fussed.

On the 2700km trip I passed around 9 defers and all but 2 waved.

That said, when you do pass other owners and they give an enthusiastic wave it is a nice feeling. I'd feel pretty confident that if I ever broke down on the side of the road a passing defer driver would stop and lend a hand.

Apparently I need to upgrade my waving technique.

A few weekends ago while driving for the first time at GVM and up an (admittedly small) hill in Ashfield, the best I could muster was a 2 finger V with my hand still on the steering wheel.

To my horror I got back a shoulder and arm out the window wave!

As a feather weight opening the window isn't a necessity for my comfort, but I was certainly outclassed on this occasion.

Mental note to self: try harder next time

Ps: For the avoidance of doubt, first time at GVM, not first time on a hill
