I believe in the law of the jungle, respect something bigger than you....I have driven Road Trains and I ride a motorbike...I take note of what size I am, and what my environment contains. I know that wrong decisions are more likely to kill me when on a motorcycle.

A classic example, in reading the link on that thread about the trip in a Landy from England to Rhodesia in the 1950's, he came across a bull elephant on the road. He reversed his Landy and awaited the elephants departure from said road, before continuing. Common sense.

These days....the driver would feel that he has the right to drive up to the elephant, toot his horn, and sue the local council when the elephant crushed his car.

The first one was the one I sent you where the pedestrian walked against the red light. I'd forgotten about the second one. So that's two in ten years.

I'd be fascinated if you can find any more.

Sorry. I found two in 20 seconds. I think you can do your own research. Both incidents I posted were, I believe, found by the Coroner to be the fault of the cyclist. Happy to be proved wrong, as I never set out to blame cyclists in general. Indeed, I rode bikes, both pedal and motor, for years. Nor did I state that the cyclist/pedestrian thing was about Australia.

I'm going to bow out of this, as I believe it has gone away from it's origins.

One of which I'd already mentioned to you, and the other one I'd forgotten. You offered to find more, which is why I asked. I was genuinely intrigued. Sorry, but there are no more.

Yes, this thread is about defender waves. [bigsmile]

And I'll try help get it back on track [biggrin]

A nice exchange today with an open series (2?) ute this arvo on Alma Rd. in St. Kilda East.

Must say, in inner urban Melbourne, while the Deafeners aren't exactly copious, it's a VERY high wave return ratio, which is fun. My son gets it, but my wife thinks we're mad...:woot:

Good one Skidrov. I opened this thread and thought it was about loonies in Deafeners waving to other similar types and found some ****e about bikes and pedestrians etc.
Anyway lets forget that diversion from the real business.... cook and I both waved at a black Puma 110 on the curvy bit of Ocean Reef Rd WA this arvo about 1430hrs but being as we were in the D4, didn't get a reply.
I have to admit I have a younger bro with a RRS Auto Bio who never acknowledges anyone...... and now he's replacing it with something with a name beginning with "B" he'll be even worse I suspect. [bigsad]

Road testing a customers 300tdi Defender cab chassis the other day in the Rivervale WA area after a transfer case rebuild....

Did the wave to an on coming Defender TDCi (puma)...... no wave back. (dark gunmetal 110, you know who you are!!!)

How rude, obviously he was a bit snooty and the old 300tdi Defender was just below him, prolly on his way to get a fancy cafe coffee somewhere [tonguewink][tonguewink][tonguewink]

Been a good w/e for waves. On the drive up Burke Rd/Heidelberg Rd heading to the M80 ring road got returned waves from two 110s and a 90.
Then later on the road into the mountains near Bright got returned waves from two more 110s.

And a nod from the driver of a very lifted 110 in Bright as we were walking around town today.

That's a bit harsh Jon. I was standing behind my Defender and didn't see the 90 until it was past. Besides I like Whisky better so the Gin would just stand there waiting forlornly and gathering dust, which by the way it has done for some time. [bigwhistle]

I think everyone needs to put their special touches on their trucks to personalize them. I plan to put the old tub on mine and turn the alloy tray into a jack off system for work, then take it off for camping and 4wding. I'm thinking of painting it back to the original Camino/Bahama? Gold. I'm not sure which one it is yet. I think that should give it its own uniqueness (not that it really needs it with all the mods a previous owner did).

Ok, so I'm new to this Defender part of the forum (formerly Discos), but now the proud owner of a Defender. Only a week in and I'm spotting them everywhere...sat behind a nice green 90 on the Tulla Fwy this morning, should I have waived? Again another Grey 110 yesterday on the Monash, too much rain to see the occupant. I must start waiving to see what responses I get. I ride a motorcycle (adventure bike) and you always get waives from other riders...except on Harley's or cruisers, heck even the spotsbike wave back. Did I say I'm loving my new Landy.

Suffering. Alasdair was in for his 40k service so I had a loaner. They're nice enough I suppose, but its always good to get back in to the Defender.

I must admit the hand did reflexively lift up, but I realised there was no point in carrying through with it since being in an Evoque I would have been invisible to a Defender driver. [biggrin]

The second was when a chap in a dark red with white roof 130 crew cab was turning into Liverpool Road at the roundabout, not only did he give me a wave but as he came around the roundabout he gave me a thumbs up. Unfortunately I couldn't return the thumbs up due to changing gears so I had to give a smile and nod. If he's on here than [emoji1303], sorry it's late. [emoji38]

I love how many Defenders I see in Richmond but the wave return does tend to be a little hit-and-miss. If ever you don't get one back from me in Monty, it's simply because i'm not paying attention ;-)

Yeah I am going to jump on the back of your pre-emptive note, seeing as "suits in Defenders" have such a bad reputation for (not) waving, and say that in my daily Sydney commute if I miss a wave opportunity it won't be because of the suit. [biggrin]

Returns on my waves have been somewhat hit&miss lately too. Even taken to waving at disco drivers hoping for returns.

Does anyone know what substructure there is under the panels? Back to chassis or body mounts?
If I ever find a bucketload of money and the mule becomes a pure fun machine, it'd be an exo cage and truck cab conversion. So sexy.

Safety Devices do them. There’s a few variations but they mount to the chassis:

I got two for two return waves on the way down to Cranbourne Christmas Eve. Both from Defenders.

I challanged a couple of Discoveries just as an exercise and got none for none. In fact one looked at me as if I was eyeing up his missus.
I'll maintain to my dying day that the Land Rover wave became the Defender wave when they introduced the Discovery.

It was a brief encounter. No names, no pack drill. Just a thoroughly good guy! I did (manage to pull a U turn). He did (wait). Got the spot.

Wifey, 2 labs and I recently drove from Sydney to Melbourne, Ferry to Devonport and then onto Hobart via East Coast for Christmas with the fam followed by a return trip via 4 nights in an old hut in the bush in Broomah (The Bush Hut @ Brooman (via Milton) - Houses for Rent in Milton, New South Wales, Australia (https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/7292758)) - epic! Great trip-all up around 3,000km. Defender didn't miss a beat although we got hot legs from the new Exbox acting like a radiator. I saw a thread on a good fix so will get onto that soon. I didn't get to use the new Traxide headlight/driving light install (and Tim's a great guy/help) either but give it a few months and I'll have heaps of opportunity. I also got a chance to try out the variable wiper mod. Worked a treat.

I was surprised by how few Defers I saw (to the point I considered waving to Disco's!!). About halfway to Melb I saw a nice red 110 towing a Cub Camper, a pretty cool County leaving Melb (young guy with a mate in a Disco 1 ahead-exchanged big waves with the County driver. All up though, Ulladulla seems to be the Defer capital of Aust!

I was staggered by how many Subi Foresters there are in Tas. I should open a Forester shop!

I will eventually get a round to putting some thoughts down on my ultimate tourer. Not so much off road focused but a good, flexible vehicle with good off and on road manners.

Mrs hh

The dogs were queried by the proprietors in regard to chasing wildlife (they had a wallaby or similar mauled by a dog before) and smelling up the hut which is fair enough. Our dogs had to sleep on the varandah and we paid a bond on cleaning to cover any additional work - the river nearby is awesome and great for the dogs to swim in so Julie (proprietor) was a bit wary of wet dog smell. I think it will be on a case by case basis but worth asking.

If the dogs are kept under control and sleep outside (varandah is pretty secure but on the last morning one of the dogs jumped off, walked around the hut and sat by the front door to be asked in) you might be ok. The proprietors are reasonable people so worth asking the question. At the end of the day they just want the place looked after and respected - fair to say most on this forum would be on the same wavelength.

I have noticed that fellow defender owners don't seem to be waving to each other as much as they did in the past. Especially puma owners, and the worst "offenders" were in Victoria. Come on guys, thats one of the things that set us apart from the others! who cares about Jap 4x4s. And discos-Dime a dozen. But Defenders, its like a club within a club. I generally give a wave, the missus and kids think its amusing. I've also been guilty of a non-return in defence either not seeing the other truck and/or my eyes aren't what they used to be if I'm focusing on driving. Also its bit awkward around town sometimes with the flash murraries maybe up themselves probably noone on here. The wave's a good thing to keep going its much more reliable out in the country maybe people are more relaxed there

Probably because it is a Landrover Defender 110. The Defender name was not introduced until 1989, when the use of the Landrover name was expanded to be used as an umbrella name to cover the new Discovery and the pre-existing Rangerover as a single family.

Before this, Landrover referred to the utility vehicle introduced by Rover in 1948 and its descendants, with the individual models designated by the wheelbase in inches or the terms long and short after 1953, plus a Series number (2,2a,3, usually in Roman numbers) from 1958-1984. Landrovers made before the 1958 model year are often referred to as "Series One", but this was only retrospectively. There is no similar retrospective name for coil sprung pre-Defender Landrovers, although in Australia, the term "County" is often used. "County" is actually a trim level designation used by the Rover group for a number of models including Landrovers and Rangerovers. It seems to have stuck to the pre-Defender coil sprung Landrovers in Australia simply because for the first time recreational Landrovers outsold working ones, and most of these were County trim five door 110 wagons, with the name "County" prominently emblazoned on the front doors. (90s were not sold in Australia until well after the introduction of the Defender name, and have always been rare here.)
