Every time l see a Defender l wave frantically as my Defender has been at the
F----- mechanic for 16 months know and still no closer to competion the only thing nearly completed is the Encyclopedia of excuses once if ever finished will be publishing and selling the Book of Excuses
I really am fed up with bull**** excuses and attitudes of so called mechanics that think it's there birth right to own your passion
I have promised my self the days are numbered once or or ever completed l will make sure nobody has to go through what l went through , l don't care how good they think they are they forget they are paid to do a job not tell us what makes there d--- look bigger
I can't wait to be waving to all Defenders mine will be a unique 130

Driving through Richmond yesterday at the lights on the corner of Burke and Hawkesbury Valley Way saw a green (?) 110 (with a Mack bulldog on the bonnet), not only were the driver and front seat passenger waving furiously so we're all the kids in the back! We were in the black 90 waving back!!

I really cannot believe anyone in their right mind would allow a "mechanic" to have their vehicle for 16 months! What possible justification can he make for not fixing it or returning it and saying it can't be fixed?
Words nearly failed me after reading this sorry tale of owe. If it was me I'd have given notice of intent to retrieve my property by all means at my disposal (including threats) about a month after he'd got it if there was no discernible progress on repairs. ;)

Yeah, I'm a bit lost for words on that count too. I had a vehicle in a shop for quite some time as he had to wait for parts from OS,, then it took him weeks to fit said parts, tried then to nail me with a storage fee.
Won't tell you what I told him, but at 22, young fit and ready to do battle, he didn't resist too much.

Back on the waving topic, had a poor run on Saturday driving from Healesville back to Melbourne, went past three Defenders and not a single wave returned:thumbsdown:
Although holding up the honour of the eastern Melbourne burbs Defender drivers is a bloke in a red 90 Extreme who always waves

Did a trip to Canberra over the weekend. Three Pumas and a Td5/Tdi. Only got a return wave from the Td5/Tdi. The Pumas just blanked us despite waving furiously.
However, getting onto the Hume tonight we gave a window down wave to a white Queensland reged 90 with large 'British Off Road' door decals. The bloke looked a little surprised. But then we where in the Mondeo haha.

To Crocodile dundee,
I don't normally do this but by the sounds of it you are having a nightmare of a time. I have a heavy diesel workshop in laverton north and if you want to get your truck out of there I am more than willing to send one of my tow trucks over and pick it up and bring it back to my shop. From there I am more than willing to work on your truck or if you like, you are more than welcome to work on it yourself in my shop and we can assist/guide with any issues.
Just throwing the offer out there as I feel 16 months is completely unacceptable, and if I tried that with one of my customers I would have been in court by now!!!

True friendship means no expectation of a returned favour, generosity or other act of friendship. The Defender wave is an act of giving, not predicated on receiving IMO.

Perhaps, but just because you drive the same brand car as me doesn't make us true friends. It means I offer you a friendly gesture with a degree of respect not normally offered to those I don't know. As such, it would be polite, and I would argue, a common courtesy to return such a gesture.
My true friends generally get cruder hand signals :p

Supprisingly, the Disco's I wave to from my Defender seem rather intrigued when they see me do it,, although rarely do I get a return, and considering they seem to be looking hard at the car, you'd think they'd be ready for it,,, and don't get all that many return waves from Defender drivers here in Melb. :(

I have driven defenders and series landrovers for more than 40 years and have always waved, maybe some sense of a common love/appreciation for them. In the early days I learnt to drive in a 1955 MGTF and then MGB's. The MG community in those days always waved (probably still does) or if you had a rare enough model would stop on the side of the road and have a chat.
I shall continue to wave and hope most of you do so too. The wave is usually accompanied by a BIG smile, and that is a great feeling as someone pointed out earlier in this thread :-)

Of course it's not mandatory but to suggest that we are all snobs because we expect a wave in return is a little hard to swallow. I am sure I have missed waves but not on purpose. I wave from the Disco all the time. I work in Paddington, in inner Brisbane, and I never get a wave in return from the Range Rover set. I don't care. If you don't want to wave to me in my nice comfy Disco with the great stereo and cold aircon which cost half as much as your Defender. It's free world. I won't take it personally.

It really has nothing to do with the type of car you drive. I take exception at someone who would suggest that anyone who waves in their Land Rover is some sort of snob who expects a wave in return. It is a fun thing to do. It creates camaraderie and and a sense of mateship. If you don't want people waving at you, go and buy a Toyota. If you don't want to wave back then don't, I don't care, just don't hold it against people who do.

Carl you're yotally missing my point mate.
I wave all the time to all sorts of vehicles and more than anything I enjoy the cameraderie of the Defender wave. That's why I'm engaging with this great thread called "where's the Defender wave gone?..."
My point is that when I wave I don't expect a wave back. If I receive a wave back that's even better, but I don't hold it against anyone who doesn't wave back. Waving is about giving, not receiving. True Mateship / Friendship is not based on the expectation of receiving. It's based on mutual unconditional giving.

So - in my mind - the "Defender Wave" is really a "Land Rover" wave and includes all the Series and the Defenders!
I remember early on a Discovery gave me a wave, which I reciprocated!
The amount of Disco's and Range Rovers that pass me without a wave suggests they are not interested in waving at Defenders.

The Defender wave is actually entirely egalitarian, as long as you drive a Defender. That's why it's called the Defender wave.
The Land Rover wave is something else and clearly has less of a cult following.
Defender drivers sometimes enjoy a wave with drivers of other Land Rover marques, out of sympathy that they don't drive a Defender 😝
Disco, RR, etc Land Rover drivers sometimes enjoy a wave with Defender drivers, out of sympathy for the fact that they're driving a Defender. 😝
It's simple, it's free, it's fun, it's not compulsory, it's friendly, it's camaraderie like nothing else, it's either something non-Defender drivers wish they had, or something they think is daggy, ...but it is most definately a Defender wave and if that makes it eliteist so be it. But I don't think it's elitist. It's just specific to Defender, because Defender has a unique character all its own (which by the way has just ended production for ever).
Cheers all 😊👍

Cheers all 😊👍
The wave as such seems to vary from 2 fingers lifted off the wheel to arm and head out the window madly waving making sure your seen.
I tend to go with raised hand off the wheel unless I personally know the person.

One of the things I loved the most about cruising through SA was all the friendly waves from all and sundry. 4X4's, cars with campers, caravans, was great. Even got one each from young Mr and MRS Tombie ;)

I think it's just fun. Shared amongst like minded vehicle owners. I really don't need to hang a tag on it. That's looking a bit to deep for my thinking. It makes me and mine smile and maybe brightens someone else's day.
I was driving into Seymour yesterday taking my boss to Toyota and waved at a nice Defender heading to Puckapunyal. My boss had a good chuckle and said 'I don't get waves in the Hi-Lux' I just gave him that 'go figure' look haha.
I wave at all series and Defenders, any Boxy Landrover really. I don't tend to wave at other models. It's not to be rude. I really like Discoverys it's just, to me anyway, a Defender/Series wave.

Not in a puma it's not :) not a huge fan of the engine/gearbox, but that's me.
But I needed to see if the driving position could work for me. It does. And the dash isn't bad, my girlfriend much prefers the puma dash so it will be used in whatever I build.
I was surprised at how comfortable I found it, but slightly disappointed with visibility, I find the d2 better with its much larger windows.

Yeah second in mine is notchy until it warms up. A brief pause in neutral and slow change makes all the difference. It becomes a habit. It's actually a very relaxed way to drive IME.
Agree wheel arch noise is a bit of an issue, but you get used to it. Rubber coatings sound like they can help, but I've never bothered. You dont hear it when loaded up of course.

To the comments about the puma g/box, yes i find 2nd a bit notchy until it warms up a little, but then again my R380 feels the same way. I really like the 6 speed, there is always the right gear for the job... although it's a pain around town sometimes.

My gear changes are all mechanically clunky sounding unless I'm ultra-careful, but the worst thing is if I'm rolling off from the lights or behind someone in a carpark, and they, being a hat driver, mobile phone user, person-next-to-them chatter etc, decide to accelerate at 10% of the normal speed.
I've gone through 1st gear and put it into 2nd, and then find myself not going anywhere thanks to them, and about 25% of the time end up bunnyhopping noisily.
I guess it's my own fault for not taking it out to its natural habitat more often - where there's no thoughtless drivers in front, behind, or anywhere for miles.

Have to admit though the first time we drove off the bitumen for the couple of kms to the farm my wife was way less than impressed that I had sold our Prado with all the gun shot sounds coming from under the brand new Defender.
As a result a week later I did get rhinoliner put under the wheel arches (as well as liberal coating of rust protection) and it made a difference.
But after a while even my wife got used to the noise. Drowns out the 8 and 6 yr olds fighting in the back!

Yes lots of defenders at Camden and a few waves when leaving. Big wave from a white 110 Puma towing a trailer in Richmond this afternoon. Sent from my iPhone using AULRO mobile app

I'm glad this thread is called "wheres the defender wave gone", Maybe call it "only defenders wave"? Only one wave in three weeks from a disco, defenders wave like they are having a party and want you there. I think the discos and rangies that I pass are owners because, what they drive looks like money! Can't get a wave from they though!

I am currently on a rather large project in Madagascar, the one and only Landrover out of a multitude of all makes and models is a 97 300Tdi Defender, used by a local security firm to move there people about, they wave every time they see me as do I... I have a part Landrover, a 2.2 Ford Ranger... they wont swap...

Got snobbed by a td5 110 in Umagico a few weeks ago (full arm out window wave). As it turns out I saw them last week down at Mutee head and it was a hire vehicle. Two euro lads who thought that washing their dishes (with meat scraps) off in the waters edge would be a good idea at 9:30pm with a headlamp you could barely see your own hands with. I went and politely said how that may not have been a great move, next morning they were bathing at the same wash spot (very murky too)....
Other than that have had some very enthusiastic waves lately.

Yeah it's funny. I can think of at least half a dozen in my local area. It's now unusual if I go down to the local shops on a Saturday morning (Turramurra) and don't see a Defender.
None of the owners look like hipsters though, except me of course. However I do know there's a few of us who bought them as it was the end of production (including myself).

Just had a read, it's all positive and any excuse for Land Rovers to get together is a bonus.
Never mind my sarcasm in the previous post, that's my attempt of being funny.
But I am bewildered that if you have children wouldn't your love be enough motivation for you to father them correctly.
Hence my previous sarcasm, if you're educated (and have all your teeth) and are emotionally stable type guy then do you really need tips on Fathering?
It's all positive I know but the thing we are all guilty of is the amount of time we do/don't spend with our kids.
I'd say it's just a good excuse for a Defender Day. Enjoy yourselves and don't forget the pics. :) [emoji106][emoji3]

Actually the interesting thing a few of us noticed is that almost all the Dad's that turned up at our school event were already the ones that spend a lot of time with their kids!
However, even then we all did walk away feeling like we should make that extra bit of effort. So often you find yourself even doing that extra job around the house or something on the weekend when maybe it could have waited.
Anyway, I didn't know about that event but will try and get there. I've heard the message before but it might be fun to meet a few other Defender Dads!
