Actually - there was no one in the truck!

I gently wave at a 110 in a car park (as fun) such is the lack of Defenders out my way :o

Funny thing is how the wife is now spotting Land Rover Defenders (and Series) - so I may spot more and wave now I have her on board!

Cheers,
Col.
Sorry Col. I should have quoted loneranger.
Like you though, I often see a white 110 duel cab with a tray back, parked 100 Meters from The Gates Of Heaven and a Perentie, in Campbell Rd Alexandria. I've never seen the drivers.

Waved to, and got a wave back from both the driver and passenger of a fully loaded up Tassie plated 110 on the Princes Fwy near Werribee yesterday.
Possibly heading back to Pt Melbourne to catch the ferry?

Got a honk and wave from some random guy driving a red sedan into Evans St, Rozelle this afternoon.

At first I thought, 'mate, you've got the wrong guy' till I realised he's probably acknowledging the Big D. So I waved back. Happy days!

The worst thing about the Defender wave is not enough Defenders to wave to lately!! And then when I finally spot a black one at Waikerie SA the other day and he ignores my wave! Hmmm

I don't see many out here in the Hawkesbury unless I am missing them - it is full of Troopies - have to say that the few Land Rover Series / Defender out here that I have seen do wave.

On Sunday near Clarendon I got waved at from a Defender and then less than 300m later I got a wave from a older Disco (nice) - waved back to both.

Then on the way back at Windsor I saw a Defender 130 Tray top (??) and got a really nice wave from what looked like a younger guy - I was taking off (ha ha) from the lights while he was on a red - we both had big grin's and enthusiastic waves

The amount of brand new 90s with business shirts behind the wheel that don't wave is horrid. Past 3 this morn, not one wave back.
If its a flat bonnet your garenteed a wave back.

I either got snubbed/ignored on Tuesday afternoon, or he just didn't see me. I waved as I cruised through the Leach Hwy/Murdoch Drv intersection, and he was sitting at the lights on Murdoch.

Don't worry this will all change when they trade in early on new mid-life crisis mobiles and the end of production fad is over.

Just back from Fraser Island, met Tonic and Tim (team pinzgauer) got a big wave from a defender, seriously outnumbered by double cabs and cruisers. Rescued one Suzuki vitare that was up to its bumpers in sand. Big wave on the way home south of Gympie, all is well in the world.

Since getting my TD5 130 a few months ago I've got 9/10 waves from other Deefers around the ACT. I'm going to put down the lone non-waver down to him not seeing me, just for piece of mind and ego. Had one particularly enthusiastic flash, wave & honk (the holy trinity?) from a grey 110 Puma C/C on Dryandra St one morning a little while ago, made my day.

So there seems to be a good "wave-culture" here in Canberra.

I've missed one or two potential waves from situations such as backing into a parking space, looking forward and seeing a Defender had passed while I was looking the other way. Still waved to see if they were looking back, feels like I'm letting the team down!

The S.O. and I were down the South Coast near Gerroa and Gerringong three weeks ago and I saw atleast 10 Deefers in a few days, too bad we were in her Honda CRV.

I have to apologize now to anyone that I didn't wave to previously, or I may not wave to in the future.... Due to thinking about othet things as I drive, I simply dont see you. Well..... Not as anything but another potential hazard. :)

I have noticed on Greenmount and heading east, that I dont seem to be the only one with that problem.... Or perhaps it's as someone else hinted at, and some of those should be in Jeeps.....
2 weeks ago I realised one was at the lights too, but due to thinking about the meeting I had just had, I didn't notice him till I was almost out of the intersection. Cnr Murdoch drv & South st.

I am the white 90 with black roof and roo bar. In a business shirt if toing and froming work.

And what ate you supposed to do as you overtake one???? I still wave as I go by, but only 33% of the time I get waved back to. Perhaps it's the thought of being overtaken..... Some people don't like that.

I have noticed that drivers of other cars often have a real problem with being overtaken by a Defender.... They will be ambling along doing what ever speed they can be bothered doing in a 110 zone, and when you go to over take them at a over taking lane, they speed up to the speed limit..... Marvelous people them...... And then go back to ambling along once you can't overtake them again.......

I was down Busselton/Dunsborough way 2 week ends ago, and got some good waves on that trip. I had a non LR person with me, and he seemed impressed that we nearly all wave to eachother. He's now a convert, and is trying to convert his mrs. :)

Cheers,

Phill (who isn't being rude, but simply doesn't notice you)

Been running around the ACT and out along the Barton Hwy for nearly three weeks now and my strike rate is roughly 50%.

Much to my surprise it's been the 110/Tdi's/TD5's letting the side down, most of the TDCi's have waved. [emoji33]

I see a few defenders around Adelaide and usually exchange a wave. No other series vehicles just yet and after tomorrow I'll be less frequent in the lr when I start commuting by bike. Must say I've always been an admirer of the defender but the new models are truly ddg. Especially the metal grey. I can see myself aspiring to a twin cab with a canvas cover simply because.

Had a corker of a weekend with the waves around Tamworth:
1) 1 Wave saturday (10.45am) to a white defender at Bridge St
2) Another wave to a white one towing a trailer on Barnes st Saturday around 11.15am
3) A silver Puma towing a motorbike trailer at Limbri Sunday approx midday.

Defender wave is alive and well in Tamworth. Surprisingly, they were all drivers that I've not yet had the pleasure of meeting! If you're reading, get in touch as we do arvo beers at nemingha pub approx once a month.

I wave at all Landrovers I see including Series, Countys, Defenders, Discoverys and Range Rovers..... and I am Puma Owner???

However, usually I only give the newer Range Rovers an index finger wave as they rarely wave back. I suspect a lot of the drivers of older model Range Rovers used to be Series or Defender owners as they give me a good wave?

If you do not get a wave from me it's because I haven't seen you, or the tinting my Defender came with is too dark.....

When in my Defender (PUMA!!) I wave at defenders not Discoveries or Range Rovers (and would never even acknowledge a hair dresser in an Evoque)

When driving in my Range Rover I wave at Discoveries & Defenders and Salute Series I, II and III Land Rovers ...its called respect !!! -

The nod of deference 😉 I've noticed it more often as the end of production looms, it's often surreptitious, from the drivers of hilux, people movers and family suv's especially. Not often from jeep peeps though, nice one. 😎

I drive a defender and there are 2 types of defender drivers that i find dont always wave.
1) these city hipsters that have bought a defender as a fashion accessory and arent awareof the vehicles heritage and tradition
2) the older generation 110/defender owners who some how think they are better than everyone else.

The latter of the 2 does my head in. In fact there is a 130 driver that lives around me who never waves. Probably waved at this bloke 20 plus times over the years and never once waved. Id love to ask him why he has never acknowledged the wave..........maybe hes an arrogant pr....k.

I hear your pain. I got into trouble for a full "arm out window wave above height" wave to a defender that was waiting at a set of lights probably 4 cars back, was off to the right side of the cross-junction; I had a green so hadn't stopped. Apparently it was a silly thing to do because all the other cars would think i waved at them or something.... apparently I looked like a crackpot or some similar description.

It seems I get a lot more return waves when I'm driving the Disco1, than I do (or did) driving either the Freelander, or the P38.
Now, if I was doing my PhD, I could probably get a research grant from the taxpayer for this study and you'd have to buy the result, but I'll give it to you for free - Deefer drivers are inverted snobs!! If someone else isn't likely to be suffering as much as you are you simply ignore them - green oval badge of not.

I think you'd get more waves if you drove other vehicles. All you're doing is reminding Deefer drivers what they don't like about the brand. They'll be busy turning away in shame or laughing, neither of which is conducive to a good wave and shouldn't in any way be considered snobbery.:p

I shall now retire to my bunker and firmly lace up my fireproof suit. :o

I will wave at any Land Rover Series / Defender that I see (that is a given) - if they miss the wave or decide not to reciprocate then it is what it is - I will always wave even if I know they have missed the wave before - they will get the hint sooner or later!

It is part of the fun of owning the vehicle - I have now convnced my wife to wave as well - we once had a 110 come the other way with both driver and passenger waving  - I waved and she didn't - the guilt trip kicked in and now she has the job of 'spot the oncoming defender' :p

Regarding being a snobb - I am new to this - but I will wave back at any other car that waves at me - I have noticed the odd early Disco give me a quiet wave and I will acknowledge it.

I actually think the snobbs are the ones in the Evoque's :wasntme:

On my way along Gundaroo Drive in Gungahlin yesterday afternoon in my Keswick green 110, I received a blip of the horn accompanied by a flash of the headlights and an enthusiastic thumbs up, from the fluoro-clad driver of a white van as he drove by me in the other direction.

It was so unexpected I nearly dislocated my shoulder trying to get my right arm out the window in time to wave back :D

Who is the Keswick Green 130CC running around town with the canvas canopy?

Got a big wave a few weeks back on the Federal Hwy near Flemington Rd, and followed it down Northbourne (with MTB's hanging off the back) on Sunday afternoon and then passed it on the Parkway late Monday arvo while I was in one of the work vans.

It has been a bad week for waving in Sydney. Scores of Defenders trundling around (well... six), but nary a wave from any.

The traffic has been horrendous, so I'm sure everyone is just focusing on not ramming the fool in front who is updating farcebook whilst driving.

Lots of waves around the Northern Beaches. I generally get two to three each morning on my way to work (Manly to Pymble). That said, I was a little disappointed today when a 'blinged' up 90 with hideous stainless steel headlight surrounds failed to return a wave... and to think I had taken pity on it with my wave...

sometimes i miss a wave around town because i'm so busy inside changing gears and focusing on driving. especially taking off at the lights. Even with my VNT, the trucks can drag me off at the lights, the Mrs and kids think its hilarious. I waive and typically get waves back in my d2...from other disco 1 and 2 drivers, defenders and rangie classics. My eldest son likes it...he cant wait to get into the d1 i have for him next year and be part of the big family. The best bits are going on the barge to Moreton or Staddie and having close to a third of the vehicles LR products when they account for so few 4wd"s versus other makes.

I was driving into Adelaide on Sunday and spotted a bright yellow Defender Xtreme parked at the Tailem Bend Shell servo on the outbound side as I drove past. 15 minutes later and it was in my rear view mirror on the Eastern freeway inbound to Adelaide. Not a bad feat given I was sitting on a GPS confirmed, cruise controlled 110 kmh in a Pajero.

Then it was on my tail as I was passing another car, so I got out of its way. Was towing a trailer, had some type of blue and white BFC logo on the door and appeared to be full of young blokes. Was in good nick too.

Anyhow, we come to a nice big long hill and the driver who is already doing well over the speed limit mashes the pedal to the floor and clouds of black smoke engulf the trailer and everyone travelling behind. Its going flat out but getting slower. Driver won't budge out of the right lane so I soon find myself behind it waiting for it to get out of the way.

Then the driver sees a heavy vehicle safety camera point and literally slams on the brakes. :o There was only one tiny little brake light on the trailer that is by now squirming as the Deefer is being slowed down from just on the speed limit to well under, for no reason, in the overtaking lane. Everyone behind is hard on the brakes as well....

Gets past the safety camera point and it's back on the throttle with clouds of smoke to announce the fact. Serious smoke of the massively over fueled variety.

I eventually get past and witness the same antics at the next safety camera location. Its still in the right lane regardless of speed and doing its best to cause a serious accident.

It was without doubt the worst driving I have ever seen in my life, so much so that I took pics of the idiots in action. If they made it into Adelaide without blowing the poor old TD5 to pieces it would have been a miracle.

So in summary, this Defender driver got the middle finger from me, not a wave.

I don't wave to all Defenders.

I can't be 100% sure but I think we passed these same goons on the Western Hwy just outside Ararat on Sunday morning, they were heading west and we were Melbourne bound. Looked like three blokes. I remember well because the guy in the back seat was leaning way forward and looked like he had no seatbelt on. Blue logo on the door, can't remember a trailer, but Deefer looked in great nick and reminded me of those ESB trucks I've seen a lot of when in Ireland: https://auctionimages.s3.amazonaws.com/77711/58075/49150829.jpg. Was a really nice Defender and a real shame to see it being flogged without mercy or half a clue. I guess people can do what they want to their cars, but the driver of this one went beyond just killing his car, to doing his best to take a few innocents with him

As I was coming out of North Richmond today there was a grey black pack in front of the North Richmond shops heading up the mountain who was obviously too good for a wave, he looked right at me as I waved and passed him.

Then I passed another 500m further on, it was a blue Deefer driven by Giligan. He must of been thinking of MaryAnne or Ginger because he didn't wave either.

Both I'm dead certain saw me and I gave a good wave which they did not respond.

New to Defenders, learned about the wave pretty fast and it's now automatic and I always initiate.

I'd say for defenders it would be about 95% for returned waves, I assume the 5% that don't are simply dealing with the traffic, lost in other thoughts or I just missed it.

Months in and many waves it's still a great feeling.

Earlier Discos... % lower, but worth a crack and a smile if it's plain obvious that you'll be seen.

As for the newer discoveries - barely 5% and Range Rover, ha! - I've given up waving at them ... I suspect I'd get a better response rather waving at Land Cruisers (I've got a soft spot for a few models there too)

This is both city and rural driving around Auckland, New Zealand and I drive a Puma.

Sadly it's true. We drive from the Grampians to Melbourne (Western Hwy) probably about once a week on average and seeing another Defender is pretty rare. Saying that, with the holiday season on us we saw more Defenders in Halls Gap this week than I've seen in a long time, and a 100% return rate!

Currently 2300km into a trip from Sydney to Fraser Island, via Tamworth, Noosa and Agnes Water.
QLD has been good with the wave. Got great waves in Agnes, and Fraser is another level. Even high-5'ed 2 Defenders that were in tandem enroute to Lake McKenzie! :D A good toot to those parked off to the side in their camping spot helps the comradeship.

Drove onto the punt (ferry for the young folk) at Port Macquarie the other day and the guy collecting the toll gives her the once over like he's perving at a 20 year old in a nightclub and then says "Now, that's a tidy looking TDI - what year is it? 1997?" (which immediately reminds me of the old adage of looking at a 40 year old after way too many beers and thinking she looks like a 20 - 30 year old (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know it sounds sexist but women do it too with the only difference being what they're drinking at the time).
Nah, born (built) May 95 I reply and he starts banging on about how they're the most reliable motor, blah, blah, blah. After moving out if Vw Kombis since the age of 17 ( now 45) and being used to the 'kombi wave' we were stoked to see we joined another 'family' so it seems.

in the past 3 weeks we've travelled over 3000klms before returning to work and crossed paths with so many Land Rovers with we're pleased to say the majority giving us a wave ...some just the lift of a finger to others who appear to start frantically waving as soon as they're in sight !

It's frustrating for me at the moment I haven't got my SIII on the road yet and I'm waving but no Deefer is waving back. I suppose I can't blame them I'd probably look like a real twit considering I'm driving a '94 silver Nissan Navara 4x2 ute, towing a builder's trailer around. [emoji1]

Black Tdci 90's do wave ! :D

Got a wave at the Belconnen Way and I think Bindubi St lights today. :D

Hahaha i finally squeezed a wave out of them too!

Had about three failed wave attempts on earlier dates but last week got a big wave and a smile from the couple in it. Maybe they've just realised that it's the done thing? They certainly seemed to enjoy it.

On Monday we waved at and got a wave back from a black Tdci 110 - twice!
Once on the Princes Fwy heading to Geelong and again later from the same 110 in Airey's Inlet :D

I was agasp at the fantastic little army green Puma 90 who passed and waved to me in Lords Place, Orange this morning! Very jealous and so pleased to receive and reciprocate your wave. I hope you had a good day!

Got an enthusiastic wave from a very tidy white Defender on the Puckapunyal Army base on Friday. I've had a few on base and a couple in the local township of Seymour.
I've noticed that there seem to be less Defenders down south but so far it's 100% success rate.

I got a beep and a wave from a white 110 this morning, at the lights where Ricketty St Becomes Canal Rd. A feel good moment. Another feel good moment was parking in front of i'ts bravely rigged twin in the Hutchison car park.

Two waves within five minutes today, first from a nicely setup 110DC Tdci and then a wave and a smile from a black 90 driven by a very attractive lady. :D
Of course all ladies who drive a 90/110/130 are attractive. ;)

Test driving a Red BMW 118i today, I waved to two Defenders. It was a bit like stunning Mullets.
Yesterday, I was told I had a great rig by an L322 driver. Five minutes later I had a wave returned by an RRC. All that Rangie action in one short time and never before??? I don't believe it. :p

Maybe all the rangie action because we are now extinct.
So long and thanks for the fish

According to some it's not a Defender wave anymore, because it started with Series Landies as a Land Rover wave. Pffftt. Those Disco vultures swoop fast!

When I first bought my Tdi i drove off the dirt road where I bought it on to a 3 to 4 lane dual carriage hwy. There was another defender in the first group of cars coming the other direction. I was in the slow lane and he was in the slow lane with cars in between, so would be apex 6 lanes away and he had his hand out the window over 100m away and at the time of passing probably half his upper body was out the window waving extreamly enthusiastically :-). Id wanted a series/defended since I was about 12 so driving my first one for the first time experiencing that from the first group of cars I came across, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for the 2000km trip back home (even after cooking the head half way not being familiar with the tdi "temperature guage").

As I've mentioned previously as kid in the seventies we had a 'Jeep' wave and when we went on holidays in Dad's Wagoneer, often towing a van it became pretty much a '4WD' wave as 4wd's weren't that common travelling, so it didn't matter whether it was a Jeep, Series, FJ40 or 55, G60 Patrol, Scout, whatever, we'd enthusiastically wave if it was obvious people were holidaying/touring.

Not from a fellow green oval, but I've noticed lately that I have been getting more than the odd "nod" here and there from motorcyclists. Not sure if comes from vehicle appreciation, or appreciation for giving way / looking out for them

I've had a fair bit of similar courtesy nods from motorcyclists in Canberra. I think it's a mixture of both :)

I grew up on a farm and we waved to everyone, since they were usually neighbours. We had a Land Rover, a Jeep and a Vauxhall, but we still waved.

Peeps in the bush have always waved, based on friendliness and shared experience driving in the bush, although frequency is dropping IME. ...But this is an entirely different phenomenon in comparison to the Defender wave.

We have a small property just outside of Albury, been there about 25+ years. I haven't lived there for a few years now though, but am back there floating around every few weeks, couple of months. I'm fairly well known.
A fire went through the area a while ago, and on my arrival to inspect our property (4th day there), I was abused as a parasite just out for a gander to ogle at the aftermath of the fires. :o
Farms are getting smaller, people less friendly. Once we'd wave at everyone, now I hardly know anyone :( So rare to get a wave in our little community these days, but I still do it.

Just spent the last week in Victoria - south west of Geelong at a mates place. Went the whole week without seeing a Defender.

On my way home I got a nice wave from a 110 in Riddles Creek and on the Albury bypass a nice 90 came up a on-ramp. As I over took it we got a wave in - he followed me to Holbrook when I turned off for a break - nice wave as he continued his journey

Another good day for Sydney waving. Four waves from four tidy Defenders on the trip home this afternoon, plus one out of one on the way to the office this morning.

All in all February has been a good wave-zone so far.

The friendly wave between Defenders is great. I also feel guilty and rude if I miss one.

I don't feel compelled to wave to Discos or Rangies but I'm happy to be educated on this if I am in the wrong.
