Actually the interesting thing a few of us noticed is that almost all the Dad's that turned up at our school event were already the ones that spend a lot of time with their kids!
However, even then we all did walk away feeling like we should make that extra bit of effort. So often you find yourself even doing that extra job around the house or something on the weekend when maybe it could have waited.
Anyway, I didn't know about that event but will try and get there. I've heard the message before but it might be fun to meet a few other Defender Dads!
I'm not interested in the Fathering aspect of it. (My kids are grown up and left home.) I was curious as to who might be involved in the project that was interested in Defenders. On the website there's some fairly high profile people involved.
I'd rather do a meet-up without some kind of side message though. Has a thread been started on it yet?

Black 110 Petrie bound on Dayboro Rd this morning = 0 wave.
Corris Grey Puma? turning off Dayboro Rd this afternoon = 1 wave.
Black 110 kitted up south bound on Oakey Flat Rd, Morayfield = 1 wave.
Same kitted out black 110 driving over Arthur Drewitt Rd bridge headed toward Old Bay Rd, Burpengary, early this evening =1 wave.
Total waves 3 out of 4. The value of the wave, priceless.
I only count Disco's and Rangies if they return a wave otherwise the tally would be ridiculous in no waves. [emoji38]

Three waves and two responses this morning. The first a grey 130 puma west bound on Windsor Road at Rouse Hill, not sure he saw me in the pre dawn light, then a black 110 puma at North Mead, big wave and a smile. Then another 130, TDi with Camel stickers, an out the window wave and smile in St Peters.
Good way to start the day :p

Trip to Fraser,
Heaps of waves and good chat's with other Defender Drivers. Also Perentie at Waddy Point.
Went Convoy with the Perentie(great Trip Andrew), and allowing my 15 Y.O son to passenger in the Perentie made it the "most awesome trip Ever"!
Another Defender turned up at Waddy just as we were packing up, other driver Yells out "I'll be over in a minute for a chat", .....(wife rolls eyes, as she realizes ther's no such thing as a 'little chat').
First time to Fraser and had an absolute ball.
Funniest part......Helping an FJ Cruiser who was bogged. Noticed only rear wheels driving. I asked "have you got your Diff lock in........NO,....Are you in Low Range.........NO, is your anti skid turned off,........NO. OK Let's try doing each of those and see how you go........He then drove straight out having been bogged to running boards.......Too Funny!

There's a growing number of Deafeners and other LR products around where I live these days.
A least 4 Deafeners, 2 P38s and other Rangie models plus 2 D4s and a D3 in my road alone.
Of course now I can only manage a regal wave to other D4s.......;)

Very energetic wave from someone in a rice burner hire car in Perth city today. Both driver and passenger with arms out windows waving. Didn't know it was for me until I heard "Awesome 110 mate" as they drove past.

I had 4 waves from 4 Defenders today :-) Great day in the Hawkesbury to see 4 in one day - I often don't see any Defenders :o
This morning I swapped a wave with one heading out of Richmond as I was heading in ;-)
I went out this arvo and just got my wave in time to one going up Grose Vale Road as I was heading down.
Then swapped waves with the Red one in the Coles Car Park at Richmond and then swapped a wave with one heading into Richmond by the polo fields as I was heading home.

Driving home from Sydney yesterday I saw three other Defenders including a 300TDI 110 sort of a dark olive green with a full length rack, which i followed for some 8-10kms on the M4 (F4?) and James Rouse Drive (including being right next to at the lights) but not even a look of recognition.
No returned waves from the other two. A white puma 110 with roof rack and a Perentie which had to give way to us at roundabout, they just looked at us as though we were from another planet as we waved at them.. :(

Noticed a puma towing a trailer with the hazards on- southbound on the hunter expressway about 1830hrs this arvo. Flashed an incognito wave from the other car.
Hope it was not a breakdown? Would have stopped, but 4 lanes of traffic @ 110 and a center barrier is never a good thing to negotiate.

Three out of four waves returned in the Hawkesbury in the past few days. An olive green 200 TDi 110 was the one that missed :( , but got a good wave and hello from two young ladies parking their white Puma 110 in the council car park in Kable St, a smile and a wave from a 300 TDi 130 Ute (extended cab thing) outside Bunnings and was followed for some distance by a Perentie from Windsor into Richmond passed the RAAF base with waves and smiles from driver and passenger.. they must have been hot, it was high thirties..and I guess no aircon for them... :p

Good morning all and a happy new year. I hope this new year brings all you hope it to.
Mods, for the new year what are your thoughts on making this thread a 'sticky'?
I started this thread as a bit of light hearted dig at all the Defender (Landrover/Discovery/Rangerovers) owners that wouldn't wave back and 'Get on board' with this club within a club thing.
But this thread has proved that I was wrong! Overall the wave is strong, and clearly owners across the board like the wave also. So much so we love to post when someone returns the good cheer. For me, it actually makes my day a bit brighter. And that in a sometimes gloomy times can't be a bad thing.
I love this Landy thing. The people are extraordinary and always willing to lend a hand if needed. We will talk about ours cars endlessly. We even tell each other the bad things about our cars! Imagine someone in the Commodore car club telling you with a smile that their HSV was a leaky noisey POS, but how they couldn't bear to part with it.
Anyway, Mods please give it some thought.
Best of wishes to everyone for a safe and happy 2017. May your breakdowns be minor and your waves many.

It would seem the wave is alive and well down here in Tasmania. Maybe it's because everyone is on holiday and happy or the locals are a much friendlier bunch than Brisbanites. Great to see. The wave isn't very strong here - but I managed to elicit a wink of the headlamps from an unidentified vehicle on my way to the wood yard yesterday. At first I thought it was a heads up for a speed trap - but nothing spotted so I'll take that as a "light-wave".

Still good south of tassie. Every defender waved so far even before I get the chance to be the first to do so. Good to see. I just love seeing them approach from the other side, gives you a chance to see them from a third person view if you get my meaning!

I find the habit hard to break when driving other cars and bikes.

Sightings on my recent travels. New years eve, Nicoll Highway Singapore east bound 2 Puma 90 'vans' (no rear side windows) about three minutes apart, with winches and recover gear mounted externally and chunky tires. New Years day another Puma 90 (with rear side windows) also with winch and recovery gear. All had Singapore rego (non military). I lived in Singapore for a number of years and never saw a private 110, plenty of police and military ones in those days, you did see the odd Malaysian rego'd 110.
2 Jan about 10 kms south of the old Clark US airbase on the Northern Luzon Expressway (Philippines) a dark green Puma 110 parked at Burger King. Also spotted a couple of Disco 3's and an older Ranger Rover in Manila, a large Land Rover Bill Board with the new disco on it too.
This morning in North Richmond a red 110 with white roof (tdi or Td5) towing a trailer but too far ahead for a wave. :p

Today I went home early somewhat crook, and on the way back in to pick up the better half, low and behold, out he comes from Greens road across in front of me,,, so I waved,,, hehe, he waved back,,,, success :D

So much so that I thought they were in trouble and did a u turn to head back. 100% on the "wave response ratio" (WRR?) so far this week. 5 out of 5.
Today a blue 110 with white roof, full rack with all the gear, covered in mud and looking like the ducks guts heading west at the Richmond bridge. yesterday a black puma shorty (with black rims) leaving RAAF Richmond, earlier in the week a white 130 HCPU (i think) with a caravan, east bound passing the Polo grounds at Windsor, very big out the window wave from an older gentleman. The day before that a dark green 110 with white roof and rack, high-lift jack and other gear on the roof westbound passing RAAF Richmond, and last weekend a white Puma 110 with 3 very enthusiastic wavers exiting Richmond market place.

A record today. Going up to Mansfield for lunch I saw 1 X 90, 2X 110's and a 130. All waved!
I think every 4x4 in Melbourne must have been up the high country this weekend given the number on the roads.
It is worth the 160 km drive for the Mansfield Hotel's chicken Parmigiana.
Major gripes!
1) Why can't people keep a constant speed?
2) Why do these same people speed up just before overtaking lanes after being stuck behind them for 20 kilometres then you have to do 120km/h to get past them?
3) Why do these same people drive under the recommended speed limit then speed in speed limited construction zones?
Give me a break!

When I drive the Defender on country roads I get waved at furiously by Defender owners, accompanied by flashing of the headlights 😀
However, when in Melbourne with it, if you wave to a newish Defender they just look confused.
Sometimes Discovery I owners will wave back and a few modified Discovery II's will as well.
Then when I'm in the Discovery II, I don't get any waves from Defenders and only a few Discovery I or II drivers.
Finally, if I drive the Freelander I, no one waves back.
I don't bother waving to the polished D4's & RR Sport's anymore. Most owners only have it for the image down here. What's odd is D3's seem to have all but disappeared around here.

Most of my Melbourne trips have been in the little blue Freelander 1 Td4. It's a bit easier to get into underground carparks etc. The great thing about it is if the Mercedes Benz drivers won't let you merge in with the traffic, just put your foot down to deploy the smoke screen! It works a treat 😂

Except when they fly past you in your SIII heading to Melbourne on the Monash early in the morning. 🤣
I'm sorry I'm late but here we go.
Thursday afternoon,
Black 110 turning onto Alexander Abe from Swan St at about 4:15pm, no return wave due to her looking wrong way.
Alexander Ave inbound same time black 110, I couldn't see a wave due to the glare on the windscreen.
Toorak Rd heading toward the Monash, black 90 (older bloke) I didn't see a return as I passed him.
Today,
Green 110 with black pack heading down Toorak Rd to Monash went right pass me. No arm out window so I'll take that as no wave.
Red 110 heading inbound on Monash I think was a wave either that or was resting arm on the window.

Sadly you are in a very small minority, as was I when I had my D4. I barely even notice D4s around here anymore. They're so common and most have never seen any dirt. The biggest challenge they face is trying to find a park in St Ives on a Saturday morning. Most of the drivers wouldn't even know what a Defender is, let alone wave to one. Even the few tricked up ones don't even seem to glance at the Defender.
Such a waste of such capable vehicles.

My younger bro is one of those whose RRS Autobio will never see serious dirt but he has been known to flog it on gravel sometimes. I thought about buying it off him the warranty runs out but then knowing how he gives cars stick I decided not to.
And there's only one type of wave he gives to other drivers. [biggrin]

A sincere apology to the black 90 with a silver roof I passed on Pennant Hills Rd this morning. I got a huge arm out the window wave and failed utterly to return it. Just caught it out of the corner of my eye, by which time it was too late.

I've been out of the loop for a bit. However it seems to me that there are more new defenders around than I could ever remember. When we bought ours, yearly were only about 120-160 a year. It would appear that they were easily beating that towards the end of production.

I could say the same thing about heavy vehicle driving. Every idiot can dart in and out, pop up in the mirrors just as I'm changing lanes, and do all the things that idiots do. The one BIG difference is, if a car, or worse, a bike does something stupid near me, the chances are, I'll be going home, having to live with the fact that someone took me on, or just plain misjudged, and THEY won't be going home. It's called suicide by truck, and I REALLY wish people would stop doing it. I've got 34 wheels. You won't miss all of them, no matter how small a ball you roll into. Don't play near trucks. Truckies are people too.

Thanks for the post. It's an interesting perspective.
We need stuff delivered.. we need people to do this work. I'm sure that 99+% of truck drivers are very professional drivers.
The other perspective too is people need to get around. It's one thing to say we need stuff delivered - but the whole reason is so we can go to the shops and buy it, and get around.. and live etc.
The issue with these things is the sliding scale of potential for harm. A pedestrian or a person on a bike can do little to harm anyone other than themselves. Then there are motorbikes, then cars, and then trucks. All of which use fossil fuel to amass what would have been an unimaginable amount of kinetic energy only a few hundred years ago. We should expect the people with any potential for harm to behave the most carefully.
Unfortunately though.. all the methods of transport are operated by humans. Every day we see people doing stupid things on the road .. yet we just can't stop people doing them. People know they are doing stupid things but they still do them. I've got no answers.
The culture of safety in the airline industry shows how much could be done. Complex issue.

I do struggle to accept this thinking. i.e. Wherever you are on this vehicle size continuum - truck, car, motorbike, bicycle, pedestrian - the operator of the larger of any two vehicles has a greater duty of care.
Am not suggesting its ok for vehicle operators of any vehicle to exercise little care or concern for other road users. I am suggesting that the same (high) level of duty of care should apply across the board with no reference to relative size or relative vulnerability of any specific vehicle.
And perhaps its fair to say that the existing road rules do place a high level of duty of care on all road users already. (Driver of a B-Double reverses over a kid. Driver of a car reverses over a kid. Is one more heinous than the other?)
As such its totally lacking any value for smaller vehicle operators to despise larger.... and vice versa. "You and I got to do for you and I" - Macy Gray from the song, "Do Something"

Sorry, but I simply don't agree. Everybody has a responsibility. There is no sliding scale for this. Statistics prove that between 65% (VicRoads) and 80% ( NTI ), of crashes involving trucks and cars are the fault of the car driver. People tend to treat trucks as obstacles, something that's in their way, not as something that will kill them if they make a mistake when overtaking, cutting in, or pulling out. A vehicle 26 metres long and potentially 60+ tonnes is not something to disrespect, or disregard.
As for a bicycle doing little harm, you should perhaps look up some stats on that. A cyclist can kill, as has been seen many times, when pedestrians have been knocked down, often by cyclists who don't think traffic lights apply to them.
The culture of safety in the airline industry shows how much could be done.
Idiots fly planes too. I was on the Tulla freeway the day that the, Garuda I think it was, 747 attempted to land at Essendon Airport, when he was supposed to be putting the thing down at Tullamarine. Not sure he kept his job.
The worst disaster in aviation history was caused by a pilot taking off without clearance. KLM 4805 collided with Pan Am 1736 on the runway of Los Rodeos Airport on the Canary Islands, killing 583 people. Admittedly, this incident led to improvements in aviation procedures, but it still happened, and a so called 'professional' caused it.

Fair enough... It's a strange thing the whole cars VS bikes thing and I've got no time for it.
But just for your reference.. Up until just this year I'm not aware that any cyclist had ever killed a pedestrian in Australia. And it was found to be the pedestrians fault who despite your assertion actually walked against the light. What might be of interest to you.. and this is a stat that isn't often considered. In collisions with pedestrians and cyclists it is usually the cyclist that is more seriously hurt. In fact, there have been an number of incidents where cyclists were killed in collisions with pedestrians. I think the rate is about .75 a year, so not often but it does happen. Meanwhile, around 200 pedestrians a year are killed in collisions with motor vehicles. Humans are funny .. if it happens often enough we tend to ignore it and concentrate on the things that happen rarely. [wink11]

Yes, idiots fly planes. But unlike professional drivers, one good screw up and it's very likely they will be imprisoned, and also pretty well certain that they'll never work in that industry again.
In case you don't know, Australias biggest nearly crash ever was caused by a pilot data entry error. The crew had pretty much resigned by the time they landed.

Nor do I. I believe we all have a responsibility to share the road.
As for cyclist vs pedestrian

The first one was the one I sent you where the pedestrian walked against the red light. I'd forgotten about the second one. So that's two in ten years.
I'd be fascinated if you can find any more.

EDIT: And don't think for a moment that I don't think truck drivers aren't awesome. It's a tough job that the community require. I'm sure nearly all of them are very professional and awesome. :)
