As in Thomas the tank engine? because he is blue? no... I should have introduced everyone to Frank. As in Frankenstien, because if you look carefully you'll notice he's not quite what he looks.

Here's my 110.Most of the big stuff has been done.
I want a rear locker and exploring stronger axels, and fitting Mulgo Gull wing rear panels.
Fully sound proofed and with Recaros fitted, it's very comfortable.
Best wishes all.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvZbleEgx2I

---------------------------------

The Defender is a rare 110 3 door Panel Wagon to ute conversion with Maxi Drive portal Axles which give a instant 5" extra diff clearance. The axles are laminated and braced for extra strength.

The gear box is a Auto conversion to a 4HP22 with 4HP24 Internals. It has a LT230 Transfer Case with 49% reduction gears for low range.

It rolls on 17" Bead Locked Walker Evans on 37" BFG KM2. Koni Raid shocks and Range Rover springs

The Engine is HS 2.8 International with a variable Vein Turbo.

A second radiator is mounted in the back to keep the engine cool.

The whole truck is engineered and road legal in Australia

not disappointed just playing the guessing game! and dont worry, a 200Tdi with that turbo and tweaking is a pretty awesome engine - some say they were better than the much acclaimed 300. PLUS this is the 'show us you Deefers thread' and you have put up a series with Deefer bits - very nice and I'd have it any time.......

I remember when he first started and we were going up a trail up near Dingo Flats (up Barrington Tops way) and he was a bit concerned that we were on the verge of tipping over backwards - now he's out every weekend and doing stuff I'd cringe at - mind you I can't afford the repair bills :(

haha yea. Ppl ask me what I've done with it, I say, well.... I've changed everything BUT the springs, doors and drum brakes (although they are now the 11x3inch units) pretty much everything else is modified or changed out to something else.

I was surprised it took the rear view wiht the spring hanger hanging out for someone to pick it, haha, thought someone would spot it from the front. :)

Hi.
They are from the seller JAxx tracks (I think) from EBay.au
JTX he also goes by.
Great bright white low beam, white halo, and flash amber with the indicators.
One is slightly faulty so I'm waiting for a replacement to be sent.
Recommended if they honor the replacement, and only $400 au.

So last Monday a bus reversed up a small suburban street into my parked Defender. Luckily i was somehow watching it all happen from the people's garage where I was working that day. What are the chances the 10 seconds in the many hours it happened To be there I happen to see it?

Anyway I ran out as it made a nasty crash noise. As I turned the corner to see the damage expecting something really bad, said bus is still reversing up the street like nothing happened, I was surprised to see nothing noticeable. As I inspected further he had scrapped my front quarter panel and dented it. I started waving at him to stop but he ignored me and drove off. The neighbour had also come out due to the noise and suggested I get in the car and chase him. Thankfully I did see the route number of the bus. I drove after him but couldn't find him. I went to the police station and made a report and rang bus company. He had also smashed into my tyre and bent both steering arms. Thankfully the bus company admitted fault and it's all going to get taken care of.

Heavy duty steering arms have been installed by LRA

Anyway, heres a pic

Yes I wave to Defenders, there seems to be more and more around here and the coast. My mate is in LRACT but its a pity the events always seem to clash with visiting family in Melb or Newie etc.

I'm taking some time to regain my 'photographic fitness' because next year my wife and I are doing what Simon did (110aroundoz.com) but without a trailer.

.... and btw we shot it in 4K HD and I edited it on my Sony Bravia 55in tv. Its gorgeous on the TV. I think we should be aiming for a LR tv channel. Every other hobby seems to have a channel...

Hi Guys, - I thought I'd share a few pics of my truck with you. I drive through out California and the western US to photograph landscapes using a Large Format camera with (Black and White Film) - Most of the time I am by myself - or with my dog "Jack" a small rat terrier.... he loves 4 wheeling with me. I do a lot of driving in the eastern Sierras's, Inyo and White mountains and Death Valley. I don't bash my truck.... most of the time I am by myself - with no local services (most of the roads I travel were built for miner's horse drawn wagons) - so no rescue trucks to haul me out. I try to keep my truck in top running condition....

When I look at pictures of Landcruisers, Patrols etc in the bush I can't help getting the feeling that I am looking at a machine which is at odds with its environment, that there is a tussle happening.

When I see Defenders in the same sort of pictures it is as if there is a passive ambiance, that there is a symbiotic relationship occurring with the Defender not only fitting in but belonging there.

Hi Guys - Thanks for the warm welcome and complements on my truck. "Monza Red" was not my first choice in colors, but NAS D90s were and still are rare as "hens teeth". So when an opportunity to get one came up I jumped on it. I got use to the red.... The truck started life as a ST. But I sourced a station wagon roll cage, a new 2001 pull off Roof cap, Roof sides and a liftgate. (the lift gate came from a '64 series IIA ). I cut the holes for the windows, painted the roofs sides and lifgate to match the color of my truck then, installed glass. I really don't miss the soft top - I appreciate having the full Station wagon every time I am out above 4,000 feet. I am regularly out in elevations between 8,000 to 11,000 ft in elevation - the solar radiation at those elevations is killer and aluminum is a good sunblock! Within a few years of owning my truck the interior plastic components started breaking down. I bought my truck for the long haul .... So I replaced the center console, door panels, and speaker boxes. with stainless steel components I designed and fabricated. I have maintained dual careers (an engineer and a fine art photographer). I eventually shifted from steel to aluminum materials. A few of the newer items I fabricate are aluminum grills, wing top air scoops, and rear license plate lamps. In my spare time I use to make and sell my components to the US market, but I took a 5 year break to work on other projects. But just last month I made a set of right and left wing top scoops for a 110 driver from Newtown, Victoria. It cost about $23 US dolllars to ship and took about 9 days. I attached a few pics of some of my components for you to see. But you may be interested in visiting my "Defender Products" page on my americandirtroads.com website. My metal shop is in my garage - right next to my full dark room where I process and print my photographs. I hope I haven't bored too many of you - but it is really nice to see that others around the world actually realize the functional value of Land Rovers. A lot of the NAS defenders here in the US have been moved into garages for investments. The only time I have seen land rovers off in bush where I go is when I led a group of land rover drivers from a local club for a week of driving the eastern sierras and White mountains. I guess if I joined one of the clubs I'd see more LRs. in the bush. Most of the LRs i see here in Calif. are grocery getters!

Weird eh.............:confused::confused::D

Thanks for the complements - I too agree the site needs an overhaul - The original site is well over 12 years old and was designed to fit monitors of all sizes, cross platform compatible, and browser independent. The new section "Defender products" is a little more mobile friendly. In my spare time I intend to update the entire site. But thanks for visiting and the input.

That sounds like a great trip. Have you ever taken pictures from the top of your truck? I took a queue from Ansel Adams who use to shoot images from the top of his station wagon to clear unwanted ground clutter in the foreground of his images. I put a Hannibal roof rack on my D90 and a 1/2" thick sheet of plywood to stand on. I use the roof top purch on a regular basis. I attached a couple pics for you. I used a full gallon of white semi gloss exterior paint to cover the plywood. My first plywood platform lasted 5 years before rotting out (which was 3 years longer than I anticipated). One of the perks of the white plywood panel is that it behaves like a "Tropical Roof" on the old Series Land Rovers and helps keep the interior of your truck cooler) I included a pic of my field camera under my Akubra hat- (with a Tucker Man bash). I wear that hat to provide shade no matter where I am standing. That day I was in a high mountain valley east of the sierra nevada (about 9,000 ft elevation) hiking with and photographing a heard of wild horses. The heard spends their summer in this valley because of the abundant water that comes up to the surface through natural springs in this valley. I usually visit the mustangs (a heard of about 230+ horses from Nevada 2 or 3 times a year). I wear the same cloths and hat when I visit them so they recognize me. They tolerate my presence and are very curious. But are very skittish and will bolt if I raise my arm to release the shutter on my camera. So now I use a long cable release so I can keep my arms down at my side.

Hi Nige,

yea - the roof reticule has an interesting back story. I do a lot of wheeling on the remote dirt roads in the eastern Sierra Nevada, Owens Valley, the Inyo mountains, White mountains and the western sections of Death Valley. There is not a lot of 4 wheelin traffic out there - and I rarely see any vehicles on the trails. The air space above these locations is restricted for use by Navy jet fighter aircraft practicing air combat maneuvers. (dog fighting). (many of the training scenes in the movie "Top Gun" were filmed in this area.) They train during the day and at night. Most of the time they are F-18s flying at 10,000 ft to 30,000 ft. (the Inyo's top out at around 9,000 ft.). Occasionally I can see them pulling air maneuvers - but most of the time you just hear them. (they move pretty fast and you can't see them well because they are grey). When they are done practicing they usually fly back doing low level terrain avoidance. If they see me while I am out there driving they usually make a point to do low level pass right over my truck. Those pilots have a lot of fun -on one occasion I was in a boulder field photographing one of the nearby mountains. I had watched a couple fighters going at it on the other side of the Owens valley. When they were done one bugged out to the south the second dropped down to take a look at my truck. He flew directly above me 300 ' off the ground inverted- then hit his after burners and disappeared into the sky. It was after that encounter that I decided to paint the reticule on my platform to have a little more fun with them. One night I was out in Eureka valley (part of death valley) to make an image of star trails above the Dunes in Eureka valley. it was about 10pm (good and dark). Just after I got my camera set up two jets set up an oval shaped orbit path about 4 miles long & about 5,000' above the ground.. It was pitch black out there so they must have been using targeting sensors to see me. For about 15 minutes they took turns dive bombing my truck. It was a pretty good air show. I use to tell these stories to my wife - but she always seemed diss interested. On one of our trips to the southwest I drove her through Death Valley . We were on a paved road stopped in string of cars 1/2 mile long (due to road construction). I was standing outside the truck scanning the horizon, I saw a couple jet fighters (F 16s) change course and head our direction. They passed right over the truck doing 6 or 7 hundred mph. The engine noise and air turbulence shook the ground and my truck. Everyone jumped out of their cars and were jumping up and down for the personal air show they just received. My wife now listens to me when I share other aircraft encounters with her.

Had the day off today, and a couple of hours to myself for a nice drive through the Brindabellas. Blue Range Road, Two Sticks, Powerline track, Webbs Ridge Road down to Flea Creek and then Gentle Annie back up to Brindabella Road to head home.

It had been raining lightly the whole way, and the climb up Gentle Annie from Flea Creek had the traction control kicking in a few times :D

At the start of the drive, on Blue Range Road I saw another forum members work rig on the side of the road. Sorry we didn't get to meet.

Here's a couple of snaps.

Hi Jon,

Yep I saw a few rally cars, heading along Brindabella Road on the bitumen (with lots of red mud sprayed up the sides), and a few more on the gravel at the start of my drive. I guessed they were doing some track notes or familiarisation, or something of that sort, prior to the event.

Looks like fun.

Carzee, thanks for looking over looking over my Photographic portfolio. I understand your frustrations in the darkroom with dust flecks.... When I first started printing I experienced the same issues. To minimize the issue I change the light source in my enlarger to a Diffused light source (an Aristo lamp) it reduced the problems by 99.5 %. But I occasionally still have to "remove" minor dust spots from my prints with a super fine paint brush and spot tone.

I restored and drove a '64 Series II A 5 door 109 station wagon 15 years ago - I kept the spare tire on the bonnet as well. I too would regularly jump up on the spare to get a better vantage for happy snaps. The burmabright alloy on the vintage machines was and still is quite a bit more durable than the aluminum used on modern defenders. I'd never attempt to hop up on the wing or bonnet of my D90!

I think the red 90 looks great, I bough my red one about 15 years ago, I though it was unusual at the time, I hadn't seen one before but have seen a few since. I've just finished fitting a new Runva 11000 lb winch in place of the old warn xd 9000.
The new winch was $700 delivered I think, and it has a 5 year mechanical and electrical warranty. I pulled it apart to rotate the motor 45 degrees to present the terminals better, It looked good in side on the motor end, and they have a nice big lip seal on the drum, to stop water from going onto the drum end and getting into the brake. ( a weakness of the old xd 9000). The Runva was a little bigger than the xd 9000, so a new top cover was required. I concealed the solenoid panel. (its compact and half the size of the Warns ) It also has addition of wireless control, but thats not wired up yet, it will mount behind the grill.

I fitted a Magnom magnetic oil filter to the gearbox and changed the oil to Penrite progear, the shift feels great when its hot, but I cant get into second gear when it s cold, it takes about 10 K to get warm enough on these cool mornings, its a pain in the traffic, so will have to change the oil again this weekend.

Thanks Stewie,

That number plate light bracket is a home made job... it is 2 piece, the number plate comes off the bracket that is behind the wheel, I orignally made it to suit a boost alloy withouth removing the centre cap. Rijidij supplies one that he makes (better than mine) but normally with the jerry/wheel combo you just put the plate on the jerry carrier. I just wanted to be different haha.

The Mud lights have a selector switch so you can have Red or White light.

I put TF Roof Console in my one, so lost the ground plate and the factory wires are a mile short now. The Mud light has long wires that just clipped straight in, so easy. Works on the door too.

I recalled the night vision trick - in my early camping days with the old man, he had a ex vietnam torch with the red filter cap.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/06/142.jpg

Does that light still work with the existing light timer circuit? Obviously LED so less current draw and better overall light?
What about the red functionality... do you find it a useful feature or just a 'look what I've got' mod?

I'm red green colourblind... so not sure if it will work on me :p

Yes it still works with the timer function.

I converted the D4 map lights to Red when I got it - makes a big difference - passenger can read, navigate etc without distracting driver or disrupting vision.

Not sure how this will work for you - give it a test!!!

Still - worth bling points regardless. But yes works.

Computer says no:

"you are definitely not able to preserve night vision by using red light"

Essentially you are just dimming the light. Same deal with fox hunting with a red light. Just dims it's a little. The red spectrum can't be totally isolated by a filter or light.

I remember reading a study by the US Navy on the topic. Red lights seem to preserve night vision the best, as the human eye doesn't see red particularly well. So if you have various coloured filters over the one light, red would be the best as it would be the darkest to the eye. The study said the best colour for preserving night vision is green, as the human eye sees it very well indeed and so the light can be significantly dimmer and have the same effective illumination.

Search google for fighter jet cockpits and see what comes up.

I said doesn't kill, not totally preserves. Any artificial light source at night is going to negatively impact your night vision. Red does so to a much lesser degree.
Whereas a yellow or white light leaves you just about blind.

From what I was taught.... red, green or blue.... it doesn't matter that much. All help preserve your night vision because you are using mostly the cones in your eyes for the colours.

By not using white light you are not 'blinding' the rods in your eyes. Rods detect light & dark (shades of grey) which is what we mostly use for night vision.

Mind you, all three colours have their problems when map reading at night:

Red - you can't see the contour lines
Green - you can't see the wooded areas
Blue - you can't see the creeks & rivers

Cheers,

Pete

I thought the same till last week. I entered the roof top carpark once and the roof rack clipped the overhead swing bar - so you can imagine how nervous I was when I left via the exit (and thankfully survived). That was over 12mths ago, until last week on my first return, when my good lady wife spotted a 3m height entry, so off we went.

As you enter northbound off Herring Rd, the buses do a 180 turn, and cars have a choice of 90deg right bend to go onto the rooftop, or nearly 180deg (just left of the bus lane). Down there is undercover and a small section outdoors - which is where the photo is.

Good luck!

It helps that the streets out here are as wide as they are.

But on the other hand, have you ever had the displeasure of parking in Narrabri? 45 degree nose to kerb, it's a nightmare. You pretty much have to take a leap of faith reversing out, as there is zero visibility. It gets especially bad on pension day when the old ducks have a skinful at bingo, and mix up the loud pedal and the stop pedal... causing them to go scooting across the road in reverse at full speed.

G'day Simon,
I have an APT steering guard hiding under the front in the photo, the same one as Wheatos has.
The one that sticks out and is more visible (unlike my number plate.....) is as Mekon76 says, it is a First Four product from the UK.

It is a winch bar specific to the SVX and LE Defenders, doesn't give you the best approach angle as the winch is mounted in front of the grill, some of the other first four winch bumpers have the winch recessed into the grill area allowing a much better approach angle.

The APT bash plate/steering guard I bought off Ben from APT who is a member on here, the First Four winch bumper I purchased on the net from First Four along with rear corner protectors and a whole heap of other stuff.

The First Four stuff is reasonably made, just their powder coating finish is usually pretty crap.

Regards,
Mike.

I have a FF winch bumper and yep the powder coating is a bit rough and unfinished in some parts of the bar. Good price though, mine was nearly half the price of a ARB knock off of the same.
