Yep Wrangler flares are pretty fugly but cheap and practical. Ive seen quite a few done like this to get extra coverage over the tyres rather then just buying after market flexi flares....

Thanks mate. I have to say the colour is so so nice. The paint job on it is outstanding. There is such a deep finish on it and this morning in the early morning sun, you could really notice the metallic speck all through it. Shame to get dirty now

Finally a decent muddy photo
This is after the weekends escapades down the West coast. It was my first taste of serious tracks. We did Wombat Flats and the Cold river Track
It involved removing and straightening the track track rod twice, many many uses of both lockers, a dent in the front panel :( , a fair bit of winching, one popped off tyre, lots of severe hill climbs, an issue with the turbo not providing full boost and a bit of rain. Sorry I don't have any other photos of the track itself
The fellas I went with took two Series I landies through. One with modified body work but stock driveline and engine the other standard apart from a Holden engine
This is the track that 4WD Action attempted but ended up severely damaging most of the vehicles on the trip

The time has come to add my bit to this thread...
After owning a couple of 1985 County 110 Wagons I decided to get a nice shiny new Stornoway Grey MY10 Deefer, affectionately known as Rocky III. Things were going really well, but then an unfortunate incident occurred where the air intake went under water in an innocent looking puddle that turned out to be much deeper than it seemed it could possibly be. The insurance company decided to write the car off rather than repair it. Apparently this is standard practice for water damage. So they gave me a nice Fuji White MY11 Deefer now known as Rocky IV. I was very happy with the set-up on Rocky III, so I just added the same accessories all over again to Rocky IV. Plus a snorkel.

Did Rock III ever start again?.
Looking at your pic, the water still has to go up a fair way to enter the motor.
How did the electrics under the drivers seat fair. I assuming all bad, but just
interested.
Insurance seem to have a blanket rule if the sills go under water, the car goes out the door.
I am familiar with the process, haven ridden the wave myself.

Thanks mate :) I had to take the rack and a few things off to lower the height
The Series Is did struggle a bit, but both of the drivers had about 45 years combined experience driving down the West coast. It was mainly a case of plenty of right foot

Hi Newhue,

I don't know the precise cause of death. When I checked, the air filter was absolutely soaked - the engine could have ingested water but there are other possibilities too. The dealer spent a couple of hours and got the engine going, but advised me not to run it for any period of time and that a complete rebuild was required.

During the time it took to remove the car from the puddle, the compartment under the driver's seat had filled up. It had to be bailed out afterwards. A few days later I had to disconnect the battery as the alarm kept getting triggered.

Mate just wondering what insurance company? I am with QBE and my concern is they will have some clause to get out of claims like this, i could be wrong, they told me I was covered anywhere in Australia but I do wonder.. WOuld be good to change to another if it gave peace of mind.

Here it is finally. Only one week old today.
Took it off the beaten track on day two and had an absolute ball. Nothing significant to report apart from the lack of any A/C. A pinched o-ring from factory meant I was getting nothing from the system. A quick visit to the dealer this week saw me right.
I love it! I absolutely love it. This thing is awesome.
And I'm impressed with the Contis. At this stage I see no need to replace them. They've proven their worth so far so I'll give them a fair go.
It's booked in for a bar and snorkel next week. And so far I've dealt with Mulgo to get side rails (mainly to give my girlfriend a bit of an easier time of getting in) and with Traxide to order the headlight relay and a kit for a DBS (I'm taking my chances with the dealer on this one) and rear outlets. I can't speak highly enough of both Daniel's and Tim's customer service thus far. Both have been very patient with me and very prompt with all of their communication. So Daniel and Tim, if you're listening, thank you.
More to follow in due course.

Crikey, what have you done to that, it looks miles off the ground.
What lift do you have? and how did you do it. Did you put a double uni drive shaft in the front. It seems pumas don't do lifts easily but you looks the goods.

Dunno, but to me one of those pics looks mighty like a portal axle. If so, this is mighty interesting news!!

They are second hand Maxi Drive units complete with Diff Locks. The suspension and steering are standard with the exception of the rear trailing arms. Currently running 35's with widened LR rims and internal Bead Locks, had 37's though it was getting a little big for daily use. Does tend to lift wheels in more rugged terrain, though still walks through on the wheels with traction. Greater flex will be on the agenda when the bank balance recovers a bit. On recent engineering I was told I could go a further 2 inches without resubmission for the swerve test and certification. The other addition prior to a Cape trip later on this year will be some long range tanks.

The Portals are Maxi Drives (MR Automotive in Queensland has the rights to them, though they are not looking to go back into production as they are not legal for registration in Qld apparently). Tibus in Germany was working on some 1:2 ratio prototypes to be used with 35's suitable for touring that must be nearly ready for market. There is also a bloke in the Hunter offering Portals for sale along with other LR gear (came across him on Ebay). The ones in the photo were engineered about a month or so ago and comply to RTA specs in NSW, so are legal for street use.

Portals raise the centre-line of the diff, so you get much greater clearance.

Do a search on Google for "Unimogs", and you'll see some serious portals!

This photo tells the story
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
you effectively raise the axle tube up to the top gear while leaving the centre of the wheel at the lowest gear/splinned shaft. It looks like approx 100-150mm. To get the same lift at the axle/diff housing you would need double that increase in wheel/tyre size and then have to cut the body/guards to prevent the wheels rubbing.

That looks fantastic! Favourite so far.
Any noise or vibration with the lift?
brendanm
28th April 2011, 05:19 PM
No vibration, as all suspension and steering geometry is the same. Extra noise comes from the motor as the revs are higher. Sitting on 100km/h the car is closer to 2450rpm where previously it was around 2000. Noise from the straight cut gears is negligible. The tyres create greater noise and they are acceptable. Idealy an overdrive should be fitted to return open road gearing to standard, though overdrives are not compatible with the Puma transfer gears. To swap the transfer then an overdrive is an expensive 2 steps back 3 steps forward exercise when the noise is n't bad enough to justify the work.

Wow, very interesting to see, where did you find the portals? obviously 2nd hand from someone? what size tyre are you running and are the tyres also engineered in NSW?

Picked up this Td5 110 a couple weeks back from a farmer near Hamilton VIC.
He was apparently going to do a cape york trip in it with the wife but she thought it was a bit too unrefined for her tastes so his loss is my gain :p

That's on the way to the Glow Worm Tunnel in Lithgow NSW, its a disused 100 year old railway line in the blue mountains... You can drive through this one but the one with the glow worms in it you have to walk to.
The track in there is easy as but there are several more tracks of varying difficulty in the area... it links up to the zigzag railway :)

It is actually Povman's old Puma, he had a lot of troubles with the suspension after fitting 2in lift OME and finally returned the springs to standard height to fix the problems, the rear has 130 helper springs inside the original coils.

Be very careful with that pod filter.
a) not great for water crossings at all.
b) pretty poor filtration for any dust whatsoever. IMO you may as well use a stocking.
Have a read of the K&N filter thread here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/50650-air-filter-tests-finally.html
isuzurover is a filtration engineer and did some filter tests in the lab on an old K&N I had, an OE spec air filter and a Donaldson filter.
Pretty sobering results if you are using an oiled cotton gauze one, and the K&N I had was probably 4 or 5 times your pod in filter area.

The red airfilter is one quick way to ruin your engine - see Isuzurover's thread on air filtration. The one fitted to your vehicle will at least keep out large rocks.

Hi TeamFA,
Is it just the photo angle or is your bullbar mounted higher than usual? The headlights look like their beam would be partially obscured.
Looks like you are enjoying your 110 as it should be!
TeamFA
7th June 2011, 12:07 PM
It does look like it's mounted higher than usual, and partially obscuring the lights. I've driven it at night a few times, though, and not had any problems with visibility.
I believe it's the standard LR bullbar, though I'm happy to be corrected. Would it be possible that a previous owner mounted it higher?
Playing in the mud is fun! Before my partner got out and took photos, I went through one puddle that was really deep (at least for me!), the family were watching and expected me to get stuck!
Complete novice at driving off road, though - must find somebody to go and play with. Still not confident in doing things I don't know I can do yet, and don't want to come unstuck while travelling in a single vehicle...

The mounts looks modified. The horizontal 'bumper' part of the bullbar should be level or just a touch above the botton of your front sill. Thats what I have observed with mine and other vehicles anyway.
This could be one explanation, it could have be modified to increase the approch angle on the front of the vehicle?
In the end if it's not bothering you, leave it as is. Adds character.

I recall that all the very early Td5s with ARB bullbars had them mounted like that. They didn't look right to me. The adapters were necessary to mount the ARB bars because of the protruding grill panel on the Td5s until ARB got around to designing a new bullbar. I still have a pair of those adapters in my shed.

They are the silverstone simex copies they are great in the bush, go anywhere and they are cheaper , i did have a problem with my first set they were 35" 16 x 10.5 i wanted a tall by thin tyre, they had a issue with them cracking from new. I was assured when i bought them this had been solved in a new batch but they did crack so i got 11.5 as a replacement these have been fine.
I shed a tear everytime i run they on the road tho, as its a shame to wear them out on the black stuff but they have been ok so far.
I was living in seville, so my main haunt was wesburn only 10mins down the road but now im in boronia so a little further on the black top.
If you can find a decent second hand pair go for em, or call chapel corner tyres, they were the distributor for em.

G'day Benny_IIA, those black rubber fittings are the same standard fittings as supplied originally on the Isuzu Landy, they have the same volumetric efficiency as the 3inch tube they are attached to, so more than enough air!
Hi Peter, a bit further south on the Starke-Wakooka track, east of Nivens Hut, that pic was on the track into Cape Melville, some the creek crossings where up to my waist sitting in the Landy, but none of us were prepared to risk getting out for a pic, due to the hungry looking large lizards we spotted close to most of the water holes. Mind you I was keen to put the shotgun to good use, but for some reason, neither of my mates were:D. Someones gotta drive, and shoot:D:D.

I'm thinking about doing a similar snorkel without the middle join (mandrel bend).
I'd like to go up from Starke, I've only been as far as Round Hill. One day. Hasn't Brian got a trip in mind for next year?
1103.9TDI
15th July 2011, 08:19 PM
The middle join takes a lot of vibration and noise out of the equation, but it would look neater.
Yeah, Brian and I were discussing the pro's and con's, it would be a good one to do again after the wet next year, be great if you can come along, the more Isuzu's the better within reason. I won't do it again with one vehicle, just way too isolated. The Gulf would be prime too, I guess we'll have to see how the season pans out. If its anything like this one, you'll definitely need a good snorkle:D.

Yeah, he had 20k on it again, but as needs a few things done to it, I got him down a bit - basically the value of the work needing doing.
And yeah, that exhaust note is very nice! Makes talking to SWMBO a bit more difficult though ;)

haha yeah when i first when to look at it the guy who owns it was away. so his mate was trying to sell it for him. he wouldn't let me take it for a test run... even though i had traveled all the way from Geraldton to see it (also spent most of that day in hospital too... but that's another story) i had to sit in the passenger seat while he drove...
as for the exhaust. i thought it was awesome when i first saw that. but then i got thinking... i want to do ALLOT of traveling in this... that noise for 5+ hours straight would drive me insane! it was funny to watch people in the cars next to you quickly wind up their window at the lights. yummy exhaust fumes straight to the face! it's pretty much the exact right height for a sedan's window.
it's a nice rig though, with the lift (i think lift) bar work and 285's
hope you enjoy it =D

Just thought that I would post a few pictures of my new Landy.
It is a 1985 Ninety soft top with 3.9 EFI V8 running Wolf 3D engine management (complete with shift light!).
It was imported to Aus in 2000 when it had the V8 (out of an RRC) fitted, respray, chequer plate, new seats and the wolf 3D installed. Since then it has only done 10k
When I picked it up it was unregistered and hadnt been driven for 2yrs. A good oil change, new tyres (32 11.5 R15 Maxxis Bighorns), new batt, head unit and speakers, winchbumper and winch off my (sadly rolled and written off) 110. Also ordered a new canvas roof from the UK and now we are in action.
Here are a few pics:
Without the roof before the new bumper and tyres. With the roof as it is now.

Fortunately the water never got that high in the vehicle.
I recently fitted the revised door seals and this slowed down the water coming in a fair bit but it isn't much fun sitting there waiting watching it rise.
It was something I made everyone aware of at the time and relocation of the ECU is something I am looking at now.

Thanks Sue. Here is another pictures.
It looks fantastic Harris7.. I bumped into someone the other day who said that he had a silver Defender but I've not seen one before.. it looks great! :)

After 5 months of waiting, this finally greeted me in the showroom..

And straight to a test drive ...

Now 1500km and 3 weeks later, still over the moon. What a comparison to my 300tdi. This actually drives like a modern car!

Another silver one! I quite like them in that colour.. :)
although I am happy with my bronze/black one... so no complaints here!

The Blue was my fist choice, but after the Tsunami, this was not available. Bronze is for SVX only, so silver was the alternative. I think the silver is very elegant, and goes well with aluminium and the black bar and steps.

In my view your car's color is exceptional and really nice. I never saw Def with this color before.

I think that black was used for the SVX (2008 model.. someone please correct me if I am wrong).. the Bronze is for the limited edition 2011 model.. :)
But you are right when you say that the silver is elegant... :)

You won't see too many of them either Harris.. they are a limited edition.. not too sure how many in your country but only 40 (of the 90's) and 20 (of the 110's) were bought into Australia.. 6 for Belgium etc.. :)

Well,, we couldn't wait for 5 or so months before we could get one, so we decided seeing as we couldn't get the colour we wanted, we'd buy this 110 Crew Cab ute. Orkney Grey (Stornaway) in colour with the Ford engine, she's quite smooth to drive,, (I'm in loooooveee ;))

I'm mad about that Orkney Grey! It looks a touch lighter than Stornoway, which wouldn't be a bad thing at all! We had a nice dry 41C yesterday and even under the carport it was impossible to touch the body of the 90!

Hopefully I'll get to park next to one at some stage to compare (mine's obviously Stornoway :D)

Cheers,

Correct. SVX's only came in Black
Santorini Black - is what they called it. (Metallic Black)

Like the soft-top 90 in my avatar...:D

SVX 90 - only 200 built (140 x soft-top and 60 x 4 Seaters) compared to a total of 1600 SVX 110's sold worldwide. (credit to wikicars!)

Working on Monty yesterday with my Goddaughter. Puma bonnet = very noisy drum.
Not so much of a "Show us your Deefers" shot as a "cute baby picture" but she was loving it. Childcare need not be a chore....!

This is my new 2.2 Puma just after a trip to the coast in seach of mud... I found a little! :D I have recently cracked the 1000km mark and i have been loving every minute of it.

Future plans include a Mantec snorkel, a tube winch bar to house my current 12,000lb winch, a set of rock/tree sliders, the obligatory spotlights (have nite stalker now, looking at lightforce), a spacecase for the recovery gear and a new set of steel rims in a LR stud pattern to hold onto my spare set of 33'' Baja claws for more serious offroad adventures.

Looking forward too seeing you all out on the trails!

Here is my 300tdi play toy i got off ebay and have been building it up over the last 14 months or so. I got it to go playing in the bush with, too save the body panels on my Td5. It was bog stock when i bought it but had just had HTE axles and drive flanges put in the salisbury.
Has a whole lot more good gear in it now and more to come :)
