255/85R16 BFG MT's on flipped disco rims

Some unique Defender moments..

1st couple were a Gulf trip, middle one is Simex trouble, have a look at the passengers front, the car was slipping backwards here. 4th is when it still ran with the ECU etc completely submerged, and the last is the obligatory Simpson pic - an LROC trip from 2006.

Get one.

IThought Id never ever be able to handle a Defender, but know I have no looking back.

I bought mine without actually driving it (I didnt fit) All I had was a drive in the passenger seat, then I paid for it. Was lucky my new seat rails let me fit in. I love it. Its *very* comfortable to drive. For me personaly, as far as comfort goes, its above a top of the line Lexus... Its just works for me.

I used to own a 109 V8 1978 dual fuel. It was an excellent vehicle but the steering was a killer. Looking back I have made a mistake in selling it. I should have fitted power steering :(
When I sold my motorhome (used to live in Childers) I have to get a Land Rover in a hurry and back then, and there was not one single Defender in the $ 20000 range for sale in east Oz :(

That Pic was taken about 10 miles east of Moab Utah, an area called The Yellow Cat District. Story goes that during the 40's so much Uranium Mining and exploration was going on out there the Mountain Lions (yellow cats) where going into town during the day.

Standard Defender 130 with rear air locker & 400kg coils with poly air bags doing the Old Telegraph Road at Cape York in two wheel drive. CV exploded exiting a boggy creek bed. I have since found out it's not a good idea to give too much power with steering locked. Removed CV and half shaft as car wouldn't turn, sealed diff with silicone and half tennis ball. Rova Craft in Perth did the Roll Cage, It cost $3000.
It is not certified. The 130 handled incredibly well, we loaded as much heavy gear as possible down low ( as you do).
The vehicle amaze me.

what size rubber is that?
37x12.5x15 MTRs on 50mm+ wider offset rims,, i had run my mates 35x12.5 creepy crawlers and didnt think that going to 37s would be much problem as i ran them on the old standard suspension with some minor rubbing, but the 37s make the 35s look small, even puting them next to some 36in simex they simex looked a good couple of inches smaller!!

It worked!!!!!

Praise be to sniegy for his excellent tutorial! Cheers mate!

This is on the maiden voyage, camped at Lake Burrinjuck
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/06/615.jpg

And later on the banks of the Darling River, near Menindee

Fridge and sink.....

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/06/617.jpg

Finally the stove.....

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/06/618.jpg

All up, with two spares, 110 litres of water, 140 litres of fuel, extra batteries, a gas barbecue, shower, porta-potti, two gas bottles, air compressor, tools, spares and an obscene quanitity of booze it weighs in at just over 3 tons.

And still that mighty 300tdi pumps it along at 100KPH and uses only 11-12 litres/100kilometres. That's 24MPG in old fart units, bloody brilliant I reckon!

Cheers all,

Paul

Sly
7th June 2008, 06:13 PM
Thats a great unit Wilbur, what did you use for the panel sheeting/roof ?.Did you redo the rear springs or are you traveling ok on the standard set up.

Sleepy
7th June 2008, 06:31 PM
Nice truck Wilbur!

Wilbur
8th June 2008, 06:47 AM
Thanks for the kind comments.

The sheeting is "semi-marine grade" 10mm plywood on 25x25 RHS steel frame. The ply is a bit heavy at 6.5 kg/sq metre but is very strong and very easy to work, and it doesn't fatigue. The frame and cladding are only about 250kgs. It's all the extras that bring up the weight to 3 tons.

It seems fine on the standard springs. Being a 130, there are dual springs on the back as standard, and it is rated for 3,500 total weight so in theory there is still another 500kgs available.

However, I really would like it to be a lot lighter. Even with the winch, with this much weight it wouldn't be much fun getting stuck in sand or mud.

My original target was 2500 kgs, but it just sorta crept up!

For all that, the chassis is remarkable. It still steers and handles fine, brakes have no trouble, all in all the load under normal driving is hardly noticeable.

Cheers,

Paul

The first photo is at the Fitzgerald River National Park, close to Hopetoun WA.
And the second one is at Dryandra, where a possum came close to inspect the defender, thinking of buying one I think.

maybe he just wanted a check up.

Great shot JohnR where did you get the guard from and how do you rate it. Looking for a guard for the 110.

Thanks mate. The steering guard and the front dif guard came from Opposite Lock and I rate them well. They have already taken a few good hits:twisted: but I havn't found a rear dif guard yet??? Any ideas I think they are different on these models to previous years?

Ha, ha. Diagnosis: Obese, these possums get tucker every night of the year courtesy of the campsite. Not supposed to feed wildlife ..... :wasntme:

This is our 3rd Defender. (7th Land Rover). Stripped to the ground and rebuilt – it took us 3 months including a full respray. It had 10,000kms on the clock when we started . We gave it a test run to NE Arnhem Land in July / August. Performed faultlessly.

Our TD5 and our daughter's TD5 on an isolated beach - it took 90 minuted to cover the 12 kms to get to this beautiful spot.

On the way back home (unfortunately). Really enjoyed meeting AULRO members DM_TD5 and Stuuu - see you next year!!!

hey erich did you respray it yourself? looks really nice....it was white before wasn't it if i remember rightly!!

would really like to have the 90 resprayed....but would have to be something we did our selves, and having never done it before would probably come out really shocking, although probably would still be an improvement. :p

Hi, yes I sprayed it myself - I disassembled all the panels off the chassis except for the seat supports as I didn't want to remove the ECU, ABS etc. Then each panel was stripped bare of all glass, seals etc. It started off white, each panel was undercoated with a 2 pack hifill, rubbed back with 1000 and then 3 coats of base coat (silver) and 3 coats of clear coat. All steel sections - firewall, inside doors, were primed with POR15 first. All internals were later doused with 3M rust preventative cavity wax. I have a couple of panels to redo but overall it came out OK - very time consuming - the best part of 3 months. Erich.

Very nice bundalene, i want to respray mine a similar color, or something like hothouse green used on the commodores,, but having no experience in spray painting it has me a bit worried! have you painted much prior to doing this? the pics make it look like you have done a top job?

Hi, thanks. I have done a bit of spray painting but still have a lot to learn - self taught - and I never rush a job. There are a lot of tricks to know. I also use only good quality paint and materials.
