Oh well, my bonnet at least! On a day trip today with the Cairns Land Rover club. Very steep rocky power line track from Atherton to Herberton.
A great day out, good people and the Defender just ate it up.
Best wishes all.

Funny you mention that...
Shortly after taking that pic, I was listening to 'welcome home (sanitarium)' by Metallica (Great song, 10/10 guaranteed to get you headbangin' with the best of them).
Made me consider what is 'sanity' when it comes to this vehicle. Some people just drive a car. Others have something deeper. Some are beyond saving.
Lyrics below:
Welcome to where time stands still
No one leaves and no one will
Moon is full, never seems to change
Just labeled mentally deranged
Dream the same thing every night
I see our freedom in my sight
No locked doors, No windows barred
No things to make my brain seem scarred
Sleep my friend and you will see
That dream is my reality
They keep me locked up in this cage
Can't they see it's why my brain says Rage
Sanitarium, leave me be
Sanitarium, just leave me alone
Yeah... this car is a disease.
But at least it's a good one.

Yeah it is, but of all the diseases I've had it's the best.
Mines parked between two Toyotas tonight at the Prairie Hotel and it just looks like its part of the landscape. The Toyota drivers would laugh at the dust inside it, but I love it. I feel like I'm driving through the environment instead of just looking at it out of a window.
May as well just watch it on television.

Really great photos. The most exciting thing I did the last few days is bring home turf (peat) from the bog with the LR88 and a trailer. No photo's I'm afraid as the wife doesn't trust me with the camera..... after my last mishap with it. Can't say I blame her! There's photos somewhere on the site of the same operation from some years ago. Only thing different about this years operation is that the LR 88 has been rebuilt and the sun shone during the whole operation. Hard to believe I know, but that is what I wanted the camera for-to prove that the sun was shining.:D

I feel the same way about mine! I find it hard to describe to friends but it's more of an experience than just a vehicle; I feel like wherever I'm going, we have a sense of purpose.

Having seen some of the photos from Australia on the site, it seems like a wonderful country to travel around. I don't know why Australians leave home for holidays. The land is so vast and varied it seems the ideal place to go "Defendering" in. Would like to take a year or two and just drive it ...in a Land Rover of course. Enjoy, post photos and I'll continue drooling:D

It's quite beautiful up that way Steane, did you go out Nariel way, some great tracks out around there. The Thowgla Valley is absolutely stunning in spring too, and of course no trip up that way would be complete without travelling along the river back home to Albury.
Not being able to get up there for drives is one of the things I miss the most about not living in Albury anymore.

It is a magic part of the world. It's a boy's long weekend away (happens each year) and we stay at a place that overlooks the Murray flood plain. It's about a 5 minute drive out of Corryong due east(ish).
We generally head up around the Mt Pinnibar area and most years visit Lind Lodge and a couple of other favourite spots.
6 Mile Ridge Tk (I have another name for it...) is where I almost rolled Rolf on his first outing 5 years ago. He was a steaming pile of poop at the time and thanks to leaking injector seals didn't hold well in low range on steep descents. I found that out the hard way:(

What have you done to make 35s work?
Any drivetrain stuff? Rear trailing arms? Is it a daily driver?

People that think big tyres are stupid are well entitled to there opinion. Why they voice it to those that want them in a derogatory fashion I will never quite grasp that.
On another note now that I have seen you can get some nice flared guards (the spectre ones) I'm eventually probably (very likely) going to get it done in the future

You'll get no grief from me. To each his own,I say. Having a 110 makes my story different also. Mine is a daily driver, has to have seven seats and be able to carry a variety of loads. This means a lot of the mods I see people do on here have to be off my list, but I still like to look at and appreciate the results of other people's concoctions.

Almost identical to doing it on any Defender..
Offset rims
Gearing really does need changing - especially if you plan to tow
Shafts should be upgraded
May require flares depending what tyre you choose.

Tombie - not yet. The suspension set up is still very much a work in progress and still in its infancy. I am acutely aware that it requires extended bump stops with the 35s. Its not likely to see any action beyond the daily commute (which isn't far - 2011 model and not yet 60 000 kms) until next year. By then I hope to have it set yp properly - or at the very least, extended bump stops

Why would he need to extend bump stops for 35's?
Exactly [emoji6] It was a bit of a loaded question....
People keep saying "I fitted a lift to fit larger tyres" - it's wrong.. a lift changes static height and NOTHING else...
If the springs are that high in rate it can't flex up, or the wire diameter or number of coils is large enough that coil bind occurs before bump stops come into play then damage can occur to chassis.. if this is the case a Bump stop extension will be needed...
All else being even this makes the vehicle less capable than pre-lift.
A tyre should be able to move through its entire range without ANY contact - legal requirement as well as sensible...
If you have to lift to fit rubber you need to change a heck of a lot more than just coils!!!!!!
In the case of a Defender:
Legal offset, correct tyre size, minimal bump stop increase (at most) and steering stop adjustment should be all that's needed for 35s on a standard height defender..
This will handle better, wallow less and in most cases flex more than many..
It may even pass the engineering swerve (lane change) test!!

I indeed 'grew up' in the B+W self processed film world! Back then, 'ASA' 800 was amazing! Then stuck with my Nikon FM2 for ages, before I sold that and bought a Mamiya 6X7!! Beautiful camera
Digital... a bit 'too easy' but great, to get shots that 30 years ago would have been Lord Snowdon winners! But I am totally amazed about how a hand held image (after a few glasses!) could yield such an amazing resolution of stars!
It has opened up a new field of opportunity! Image the same shot at say 3 sec on a tripod with ISO 1600... ;)
Funny how Defender owners have similar 'DNA'!

Heavy duty Kings springs not doing their thing.
Airbags and other spring options are very high on my priority list. It's actually no where near as bad as it looks in the photo, but Fitting the Kings a few months ago was a mistake. Recommended by the shop, so I went with them.

140kg at the ball. I measure it with the proper ball scales, and the van is well within its weight allowance. I don't carry much inside at all.
It's the Kings Heavy duty springs not performing, and they are only 5 months old, 15000kms traveled.

Surprisingly not. Before we left Sheba Dams we were convinced that we would have to turn back but I think the deepest was 3/4 up my wheel, nothing too serious at all. I walked a couple that looked a bit sketchy and it was bloody cold!

No idea.
I'll get under tomorrow and look it up.
When MRA in Brisbane fitted the new suspension to my requirements (towing etc) they did put mid spec springs in the rear but they said they had to swap with HD as the rear sat low compared to the front.
I'll get my Cairns Defender specialist (also a respected member of the Land Rover club) to recommend options as well. I think air bags in the rear are going to be compulsory.
Thanks Tombie.

Are your springs lifted or standard height? Does it ride level without the van attached? It would be a bit odd if HD springs dropped much.

It's made by ACC16 in France. It was the only one I could find which is compatible with sun roof and no modification of the truck other than tapping out a thread for the bolts which secure the bar. Here's a link and PDF,

Judging by the tow hitch the centre mirror would hardly be used.
Certainly on mine the camper blocks rear vision but that's why there is side mirrors.

Funky ...but how do you see out the back window?
I don't. Like just about every caravanner and truckie on the road, I use the side mirrors. The wheel carrier has high and low positions and it's in the high position to allow more room for hitching/unhitching. With the internal mirror gone there is a handy aperture for the wiring of all the electrics in the console.

I've removed mine as well, very used to driving without one. I remember looking into it and I believe the official stance is that - as a commercial vehicle - the rear window and every window rear of the driver can be blocked out entirely; but the mirror must stay regardless. Typical loony regulation. If anyone ever questions me on it, I'll feign ignorance; but nobody has in 9 or so years.
Oh, I used to have to put the mirror back on for roadworthies when I lived in NSW.

I hitch my van no issues with a standard swing away wheel carrier configuration, but I do use a longer tow hitch. I can see where your set up would be usefull with an elevated hitch receiver.

It's off the shelf from Safari Equip. Here's the link
Defender Single Arm Multi Height Wheel Carrier - Wheelcarrier - Defender (http://www.safari-equip.co.uk/shop/index.php/defender/wheelcarrier/defender-single-arm-multi-height-wheel-carrier.html)
I haven't yet tried it on the lower setting. Probably is OK there for hitching/unhitching.
I've kept the hitch as close to the rear as possible to minimise the effect of the caravan hitch download on the payload. A longer tow hitch will increase the load on the rear suspension.

Not sure about the "paint code" - just looking at the photo and it looks similar in colour.
I haven't seen many others with the combination of the "Montalchino Red with a White Roof" - I have seen a few with red roofs or black packs.
I have seen one other Puma with the Montalcino Red with a White Roof - we exchanged waves.

I am assuming yours is a Montachino Red 110 - not sure where you verify that though.

Thanks Yolo - I love that photo as it is what I do every Saturday - take my dog (Bearded Collie) out to do Sheep Herding at Erskine park - I like to see the Defender in the padock chilling out with the sheep :-)
I'll take a photo of the dog with the sheep (and the Defender) this weekend!
Funny that you mention the white wheels - I was looking at black wheels...... I will get a black front bar next month (Rijidij Tube Bar with hoops) - and then will look at getting the headlight protectors in black. I think I am going for a black and red look - with a white roof.....
I didn't go to the Expo this year - sadly though - I was hoping to be able to attend but was busy - probably a good thing as I would have won again :wasntme:- and that would not have gone down well :D

In the puma the features that I miss from my previous defenders...
1. the front manual vents.
2. the dash
3. loads of "available" space in the engine bay.
Things I like about the puma.
1. Quieter on the highway
2. Better feeling on the road
3. More feeling of power (maybe the difference in the way they develop power)

The green lwb defender (my previous wagon ) was terrific and has been sold to another Landrover enthusiast in Perth.
The Defender community is thriving in the south west of WA.people have realized what they were missing out on before they disappeared.
Numbers of defenders have jumped considerably since just before they stopped manufacturing them early this year.

Yes, +2" and fronts suited to the weight of the Isuzu and a PTO winch. Dobinsons make a similar coil, and they may in fact be the Perentie spring specifications.

So got back from Cobaw today. Great, great place for wheeling. Many challenging tracks. We started on the hardest from what I'd heard in Alcorns, today's participants were a jeep on 35s double locked, and Fj cruiser rear locked 33s and another 90 stock other then 33s and me. Jeep went up first as he seemed the most capable. First rock step he diffed out and after many tries couldn't get through. I then gave it a crack and had I been on 35s I would have passed. The other two didn't try. On our way down the shorty showed it's down fall with the angles and with one dip I was holding my car up on the side of a wall. The jeep hooked me up to his jeep and lowered me down.
Next we went to stumpy track. Nothing too hard and just before we hit the main road there was a flex tunnel. Wheels were lifting front and rear. Fantastic test to see how each truck handled it. The rest of stumpy was blocked by at least 5 big fallen trees. We decided to get on the main road and head to soil pit track. This had everything. A great rocky climb. Then we got to some dip sections. My wheel went very high. My lockers got switched on and drove out. I love my lockers. I love them a lot. I got to test them out a lot today and the difference between traction control and being double locked is huge.
Cobaw is an awesome place and that was my first time there. Will definetly go back

That colour is almost identical to the one used by the Department of Supply in the 1950s and 60s for 'C' plate SWB Landrovers supplied to organisations such as the Bureau of Mineral Resources and Department of Civil Aviation. I drove a number of them in 1959-60 - they were in the process of changing from Rescue Orange to this lighter colour, possibly to be a bit cooler in the sun.
A real 'Retro" look, made the government vehicles easy to spot. The colour was actually selected for maximum visibility.

Camped at Toolangi Sunday night and hit the tracks Monday. Camped in the murrindindi reserve camp area. Flushing toilets and all. Very fancy.
The wheeling was tame. Our convoy consisted of 3 90's(me 33s double locked, one 33s stock and the other stock.) a jeep and an Fj. We tried to get to aeroplane track via another track but as we got to the top some of our group were not confident in getting past a steep section with either massive boulders one side or steep and very loose rock and dirt. We turned back down and headed toward Downie spur track which had a few bog holes. A kangaroo almost started chasing one of the members of our convoy which was funny. Then we headed to blowhard track and cockpit track. Nothing hard on the way down. We decided to climb it which was more interesting taking the harder lines.
Toolangi is a beautiful forest and need to go back to explore some more

Awesome shot! even though there is a toyota in the pic as well, :p I wish I could get awesome pics like this; maybe I should read my camera manual :D
And here is a pic of shorty - took it back in June/July school holidays on a trip to the Country of NSW, I believe we were in Kwiambal NP. Which is a nice spot; not so much in the middle of winter while it's drizzly, wet and cold though. I may or may not have been in a lot of trouble for selecting the destination, and I may or may not have been forced to head east to Ballina so she could warm up.

Second river crossing at Geehi (Kosciuszko area) heading away from Major Clews Hut. An easy track but some lovely views and great history of the area.

Hi Guys
I am very lucky to have this County 90 V8, 87 model.
100 % original and fantastic condition.
Can anybody tell me if there are any more of these in Australia?
Kerry
Ok, I've never said this about any defender, but if you're ever going to sell this, put me at the top of the list. Love it.

Thanks. Thought it looked familiar, but couldn't place it - explains why that water looks so inviting. Had planned to be down that way myself over the next few days but now stuck at home. I'll be holidaying vicariously through everyone else's photos this week. :(
Cheers,

They were certainly never sold in Australia. Any here would be private imports - there is obviously at least one, but I have never seen one, and I would guess there are less than ten.

Got so excited only to discover it wasn't my present but belonged to the next door neighbour. Oh well, maybe next year my hints will be taken more seriously
