Here's a few photos of my deefer on a recent trip to the Cape:

And here's the setup - who needs a roof top tent? Or any tent! This setup served us brilliantly living out of the defender for over a month. For reference, Clark Rubber make a foam mattress that fits a 110 CSW perfectly

No, it wouldn't fit with the rear seats in. The total clearance with seats in is only ~190cm from memory, that's not much for person + pillow. With the seats out it's ~220cm, plenty of room. That and fitting the fridge in meant that the seats had to come out… Luckily it's a 10min job ;)

Why would you want to purposely put something that ugly on something that looks as good as a Defender
Dopey
2nd November 2013, 04:03 AM
Yes an SVX grill will fit, however it is different at the sides of it than standard grills due to being cut out for the extended headlight surrounds.
If using standard Defender headlight surrounds you would need to fill in the gaps.
Here is a photo of my grill from a limited edition (basically the same as the SVX grill).

Haha i remember that, i was coming up the crossing at Canal creek you were going down, i would have stopped for a chat but we were in a hurry that morning headed down to fruitbat falls for a quick visit, then back to elliot to meet up with some people. You should have flagged me down, we were setup camp at Sam creek at that stage, spent a few nights there before heading north to punsand bay, i think we may have passed you somewhere else too but cant remember where.
Its funny, i ran into a few defender drivers, but the ones i spoke to(besides one forum user i met down towards brisbane) didnt seem that interested in chatting to another LR owner, one guy in a blue 130 at Wajul Wajul completely snobbed me, we pulled up next to him and i was checking out his car, he jumped in and took off hahah... maybe i looked like some scary wolf creek type.... i really should have taken a razor!!

You know what, I think you pulled into the caravan park we were staying at in Seisia? It would've been good to have a look over the 130.

Here is my 96 Ute.
I've had it for 3 years or so and it has been affectionately known as the 'other woman'.
Fitted on the tray is a good sized camping canopy (rooftop tents is not on in the pics).
Usual mods for the 300TDi of intercooler and hoses, new timing belt and radiator. It has rear airbags and new shocks.
One pic shows the digital EGT and Boost gauges above the more than adequate wireless which has a USB feed from the cubby box.
I removed the ARB bull bar as I prefer the look of them without, but its still sitting around ready to go back on if required.
It's done a few flinders trips with me and has proven to be bulletproof.

Have had the 110 for about 4 months now. It has inherited the name Zombie by my friends as they see it as a Zombie Apocalpse worthy vehicle and think it just looks angry. Not really the look I was going for but oh well.
Things are slowly coming together. Just waiting for the Mulgo side rails to arrive and steering guard, gullwing windows. Winch gets installed next week.
Currently have bonnet checker plate and I'll be honest purely for the looks. 38" led lightbar, Custom 6 point internal cage with cargo barrier. 50 mm Eva foam partition behind back seats, Rover craft tubular bar, Supawing Awning and Land Rover roofcage which apparently I was offered cheap but who knows. I hated the look of the roof cage at first but since camping with it, I wouldnt change it purely for its functionality.
Since I was initially looking to purchase a Wrangler 4 Door and ended up buying the 110, I didnt really have any real plans for it, but since owning it and seeing what other people have done and experiencing the car, I really want to build a good functional expedition defender and do some 2 week stints around Oz.

I think some black wheels are cheesy but it goes w/ the look on my 90 I think. It's also good in plasti that I can just peel it off if I don't like it in a few weeks which is also possible.
But yes, if everyone had the same cars then they wouldn't be unique...

defenders are {insert-colour-here} AND Black. Black cross member, bumpers, door handles, window seals, door mirrors, vents - etc etc. Black wheels suit a defender better than silver/chrome/bling alloys IMO.

Discovery 1s used to come out as an ES7 upspec version with charcoal wheels from the factory, and Classic Rangies had dark grey alloys too, so LR have been doing this for a long time. Not really a fad.
I've just sprayed my 110's rims charcoal grey. Looked a bit funny to me for the first week or two, but they have grown on me now and I quite like them.

Now I'm sure there will be a few of us that would like to meet you and of course, check out your set up.
How long are you in Melb and surrounds. I doubt it would be difficult to set up an event as such,, you know, a BBQ at a park or something, perhaps a few of the guys will offer a trip around etc.

I have just gotten back from a weekend away with the Vic Scout 4x4 Service Unit. We were running trips for the big Venturer camp over the weekend. Every 2 hours we had a new set of kids in our cars to take out and try and scare.
We repeated the same course each time over the day. That way we knew that all cars on the trip are able to complete the track without any problems and it had a good selection of terrain to show the scouts what proper 4wding is like.
Here are a few shots from the trip. The jacked up 90 stole the show. Though my 130 with standard tires and no lift was still able to complete everything with ease. I do think that a lift might be needed though. As due to the length i was rubbing my belly over a few of the washouts.
The 90 did drive off on its own course to a track we hadn't checked out and decided to get bogged. Also its passenger had their window down during the experience. A lot of mud ended up all over them and inside the car. Very entertaining for all the kids to watch and then see a recovery.

Hi All, new to the forum so posting some pics of my 08 Defender 110 which we've had for 6 months now. So far we've spent a couple of weeks on Fraser Is and several smaller duration trips to some of the local dams around Toowoomba. Previous veh was an 04 Prado and by comparison the Defender is very 'basic' :o. But having said that I have to say I love it - it's great to actually drive a vehicle again;). Hopefully the pics turn out.

The rig looks good mate. I like your van, what is it? I'd hazard a guess by the look of the hitch it might be of South African origin? Looks like a nice size.

Thanks Cracka. Yes, you're right, the van is a 2004 Jurgen Expedition off-road pop-top. This model was imported into Australia from South Africa. The current models I understand are made here. We love the compact set up as it still allows us to go on our annual trip to Fraser Island but in a little more comfort to the camper trailer we previously had.

Hey all,
Like to introduce my 2003 Defender 90 properly and thought now's as good a time as any.
I'm his second owner and picked him up in April 2013. Previous owner was from Melbourne and used him for a lot of remote area work helping farmers in the Victorian highlands. Over 10 years worth of modifications were made including a Warne 9000lb winch, ARB bulbar, rock sliders, 2.5" lift, Maxi-Drive rear axle and vacuum diff lock, ARB front air diff lock, heat exchange shower unit, 45L aux diesel tank under the driver side, 45L water tank under the passenger side, diesel chip, 800W inverter and Piranha dual battery system.
Since I came on the scene I've continued the modifications by replacing the 60 amp hour aux battery (tucked under the passenger seat) with a 105 amp hour sealed lead acid battery. Relocated it to behind the cubby box and secured with a strap. Also added a home built solar regulator with volt and amp meters so I can see how much power is being pumped in from my 80W panels. The Piranha unit is just an isolator with an input for solar. Once I get the money I plan on replacing it with a 40A Redarc battery charger / isolator unit which should prolong the battery life and give me better performance from the electrical system.
With the help of my Dad I've built a fridge slide and draw unit and fitted it into the boot with a couple of high tensile bolts through the sides. Hardwired the fridge cable in as I was having issues with the cigarette plug while I was driving through corrugations outside Lightning Ridge. Still need to fit a proper locking mechanism for the slide - at the moment I just shove a rain jacket in between the fridge and the door which works fine.
Replaced the stereo with a Sony head unit and upgraded the front speakers with 4" Alpine SPS speakers which has helped with the background noise :P Plan on making up some speaker boxes and installing some 6x9" Alpines in the back to flesh out the sound system.
Just replaced the clutch at 115k kms due to a combination of oil from the rocker cover gasket and diesel from a leaking fuel regulator wrecking the internals. Just bought a crank angle sensor and plan on fitting it during the week which should fix the occasional starting difficulties (got saturated with diesel / oil). Current project is working out what I'm going to do with my non-functioning A/C :P
I use him for transit to work during the week and then explore the various State Forests around Newcastle during the weekends. Favourite place at the moment is Barrington Tops State Forest with some killer camp sites and tracks. NSW Government is reopening many of the State Forests to hunting on 3rd February so I'll be using my 90 to help me get to some remote areas and bring back dinner :D
This is my first Land Rover and have been loving the experience of learning what makes the 90 tick. Should be a fun year :D
Cheers,
Sean

I want a rack for future adventures, but will need to do some serious carport mods. Looking at different door options. Maybe a sideways roller door? Not sure if the existing beam is too low anyways.
Getting a crab bar installed tomorrow, then tint on Friday.
Next mods after that will be a hay man reese, cargo barrier and arb deluxe bar.

Been a lurker for a while. I'm lucky enough to have collected 3 Defenders in the last decade or so - the 110 I keep in the UK, and I have two 90's here in Colorado.

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I ask for your valued attention? Please let me introduce you to
...the "English Patient"!!!
She is a rebuild from a heap of scrap, actually. My wife still rolls her eyes when she recollects the memories of me buying the "object" on a wet and cold November evening somewhere far from home. A mate and mine collected it a few nights later, as it was a non-runner (engine failure due to snapped cambelt as it turned out). Lots of corrosion and more...
But all this is history, as this truck is legally on the road again! Whoohoo! Albeit it is registered overseas, due to our stupid regulations and registration process not allowing for foreign ex-Mil vehicles to be registered here for some unexplained reason. But here she is, in all her beauty (well, she'll need new doors, I know).
Cheers

Bugger, went to unlock it at Katoomba today and it wouldn't unlock with the key fob.
Unlocked it using the key, alarm went off and couldn't shut it off until I disconnected the battery.
No start, no go, no happy....
Land Rover Assist tried to help, but ended up having to get it towed.

And before the key fob immobiliser issues, I was happily playing in the rain with suspension components, checking before and after measurements with different stuff.
In the picture, with standard suspension installed, with sway bars front and rear.
There is no weight on the right rear wheel (able to spin it by hand) while the right front still has a measured 50mm of compression until bumpstop and axle tube touch.
Got a fair bit of better suspension stuff to go on it when I get the chance.

That's interesting. I have been having key fob issues as well... sometimes it takes me four or five tries to unlock the car using the key fob. Especially if the car has been sitting locked up for a few hours or more. I press the unlock button and nothing happens.
And continuing on from that, I read in the owners manual that it is NOT recommended to lock the car from the outside with the key. I had started doing that, but there was a couple of instances when the alarm went off after I started the engine! I could only turn it off by turning off the engine and repeated pushing of the unlock button on the key fob.
I really don't need or want the alarm. Is there any way of disconnecting it without it interfering with the other electrical items like power door locks?

Short of replacing fob batteries, try holding the fob against your head and try again. I don't know why, but it hugely improves fob range.

G'day mate,
I tried holding the fob against my head, lots of people in Katoomba yesterday running away from the crazy fella holding a remote fob against his head while frantically hitting the buttons while the alarm was screaming......
Also tried it underneath the guard closer to the remote antenna (I haven't yet done the antenna extension that other people have posted about on here).
Tried replacing the battery in the remote, but no luck in fixing the issue.

Cheap fix...buy a Tdi, damn my doors are lucky to actually close, that'll own lock....none of this fan dangled elecrmatrickery!!
I have been told that some vehicles require you to use each key at least once every 4 months or that key gets 'locked' out. Don't know if this is the case with LR and it sounds like you guys are using the same key regularly, so I'm back to just buying a Tdi...

Holding the fob to your head (or other dense, boney structures) actually is an amplifier for the fob to send the signal. Your skull works very well as a radar dish to bounce the signals off of, and strengthen the signal. That being said, no idea what it does to the 'soft' bits inside the skull. I would never expect everyone to take my word for it, so please look it up......amazing what you can learn from a few searches! I asked the same question, and found a whole physiology clinical on the topic. I use that trick rather frequently.

Yep, got a few 90's, driving a 300tdi most days.
Hardly ever had any issues with the older 90's, And if you do have troubles, it's generally easier to find and fix too.
My newest Defender 90 (2013 limited edition) really is a disappointment to me after 11 months of owning it, I should have put my money into something different.
Yes, the new ones have ABS, TC, aircon that works, leather whatevers, and a fancy paint job, but they also have to much electrical crap that has things go wrong with them.
Also there is more rust on my new 90 than all my other ones put together.....

Nice one Sandgroper,,
Have you thought about attaching the solar panels to the roof of the RTT ? That would keep them permanently stored and out of the way.
Sandgroper
3rd March 2014, 10:08 AM
The problem with mounting them on top is that they then can't be angled to take full advantage of the sun, also, if I decided to camp under trees etc....they would not be as effective. They fold up nicely and fit inside the camper quite neatly and aren't difficult to get in or out so I'll probably stick with this for now.

Hey mate, what brand/model RTT is that?
It's one called madcamp mate, they have a website : MadCamp Offroad and Camping Accessories (http://www.madcamp.com) and are Perth based. I bought this one because it is supposedly better built using stronger canvas and better scissor lifts etc....than some of the cheaper ones. I first saw one of these at the Perth 4wdrive show and liked it right from the start. Shoot me a PM if you want to know anything about it mate.

I reckon I'll be able to get my clothing in there too. There's not a lot of room in these things when they're closed down but there's enough with a bit of careful packing that you can get a bit of gear in there. As I said, I've got two 200w solar panels, two sleeping bags, one big pillow and the ladder and it still folds down ok. Not too bad really.

After a big old wait - the best part of 12 months looking plus 6 months delivery - my defender arrived last week!
Each day at the end of work I've been bolting out the door just so I can take it out for a drive, who cares about the house chores and dinner
Haven't thought of a name for her yet, but I'm sure it will come to me soon and I'm already loving the wave, I'm sorry if I was concentrating too hard on the road if I accidentally ignored anyone waving this week.
I'll be on the look out

Hi mate,
Im generally parked at Market Town or on Hunter St when I am working.
The awning is great, I kind of get embarrased by the attention it gets when it's up. In semi windy conditions its a real pain to put up on your own, its definately a 2 man job when wind is around. No wind, it's easy and hassle free.

Few wee additions. LED inserts (H4 P&P) about NZD90 delivered - excellent. Corner protectors as these were getting ragged. Momo Nero wheel (although indicators don't turn off now). Also stainless bolts fitted - A2 Stainless, great service and inc torque bits.

Indicators work now, drilled a hole in the boss, filed straight edges on a screw and lined it up so it hits the indicator cancellor (the blue bit)...stoked.

Had a few bits put on my Puma lately but the newest bits are Landyglass. Panoramic full height sides and quarter panels along with new door glass in the back, same tint as side windows and 35% tint on the front ones. The glass is tinted in manufacture so no film to bubble or peel off. Rear screen the same tint as the sides and does away with the OEM high level brake light and uses a smaller LED one instead.

Interesting look for that rear glass. Not my cup of tea but a very clean look none the less.
I wonder what shipping / landed price would be to Australia? I bet double the buy price in the UK.. :(

Just standard surrounds for 2011 svx
Not an SVX model, they were made during 2008.
Yours is a limited edition version (90LE) nowhere near as highly specced as a SVX edition which only came out in Australia in the 110 wheelbase.
N.B; I am of the understanding that one of the members on this forum has privately imported a 90 SVX from England.
However the headlight surrounds and grill are of the same type as the earlier SVX models.
Regards,
Mike.

So, I recently saw the light and got rid of my V8 Disco II and bought myself a new 2013 (registered 2014) Defender 110. Been on AULRO since 2007-ish, so familiar with the format of the site (for those who don't know me!).
Here's some shots of the new motor. Well, one anyway, and a link to a few more from different angles. Loving it!

If anyone in WA sees me, please gimme a wave.....I'll more than likely be instigating anyhow!!
Although the W4Challenge (http://landroverW4challenge.com) decals on the doors are magnets, so they may or may not be there, depending on how I feel on the day and where I'm going.
Cheers guys, looking forward to trawling through the hundreds of Defender forum pages, and hopefully join in with some chats.

Trimmed about 50mm - instructions say 90mm but that was enough...kit comes with end caps that slip on flush...haven't bothered to glue them.

I hope you enjoy your defender as much as I enjoy mine. Unfortunately the car in the photo doesn't appear to be a MY14 Defender as I believe that model has "Defender" on the bonnet, not "Land Rover"
