....the car in the photo doesn't appear to be a MY14 Defender as I believe that model has "Defender" on the bonnet, not "Land Rover"
Yeah, you're right sorry. It's a late new 2013 model, but bought and first registered March 2014 by me.
How are you handling it?
Loving it! I used to drive the D2 V8 with a light foot anyway, and it had 235/85r16 tyres on it, so it didn't pull as well as it should anyway. So got me well trained for the diesel lump! But I'm surprised by the get-up-and-go in the 110.
Love the ride in the Defender, in fact EVRYTHING about it. It has always been one of my favourite vehivles on the road (if not THE fave), and have always wanted one.
Just a shame I work on a 26/9 FIFO roster and not home enough drive as often as I'd like. :(

Trimmed about 50mm - instructions say 90mm but that was enough...kit comes with end caps that slip on flush...haven't bothered to glue them.
When I did mine, Opposite Lock Nerang sent them away to a place in Cairns that cut them and re-plastic welded them so they still look factory.

A fairly boring update but one of the best so far! Swapped out the silencer under the truck for a TF stainless straight thru pipe. Loving the sound. Also added rear lamp protectors.

Looks good.
How did you go with the Terrafirma pipe with fitting?
With mine, it is pushing the rear muffler against the towbar bracket bolts.....
Will have to cut and re weld it so it doesn't make contact.

Mike.

The first mod I did was getting the LR towbar swapped to a TF one, gives heaps more room underneath and the exhaust is well clear of it. I had to use an angle grinder to cut the bolts off the silencer as they were so corroded. Used an exhaust joint filler to seal it up with new pipe. Took a bit of effort to be honest for a 5-bolt drop in replacement....but won't rip muffler off now and the sound of the burble is music to my ears.

The winch bar on the red defender (in the pics just above) is a bad design....
It doesn't protect the bottom corners of the guards for off road use, and it blanks out a considerable portion of the headlights.
Apart from that, I like the pics.

I wouldn't think that warranty applies with issues caused by that particular wheel/tyre combination?
Fair enough if it was running standard wheels and tyres.....
What size are they? Does it have a lift? Double cardon shaft? Etc?
Anyways, with the old series in the pics, it looks good!
Hope it doesn't get "restored" to much.
They look good when they have a patina like that,
I don't think that any other vehicles age as well as a series Landy does!

Tonic, what brand is this roof console of yours. Is it the Terrafirma one? It appears to be grey in the photo, is that the true colour like the trim around the windows? Or is it just the camera flash making it appear light.

Yeah, they handed over 2 keswick defenders yesterday the other one was all keswick. Give them a call regarding the delivery, the issue is one of supply from what we were told yesterday.
It was quite funny sitting in the dealership waiting for the handover and watching other customers waiting to pick up there Disco's etc all walking over to have a good look at it.

Yep, certainly looks like a nice and tough 90.
I think it may have been during this outing that the owner decided to go for the wider guard flares?
It is certainly a rude and muddy awakening when you go through a nice mud puddle that there is more to it than just wide wheels and tyres....
I wonder how much mud went inside before he got the window shut?
I think the owner is called Lyndon, not sure if he's on this forum.

Just got home from the Land Rover Owners Club of Tasmania Committee meeting tonight. But not without drama!
'Fred' decided to not start after I pulled up in Salamanca Place to go to the ATM. My fault finding skills now being honed to the N'th degree, diagnosed a faulty alternator. So I hoofed it up to the Shipwrights Arms Hotel to the meeting, at least I got there.
After the meeting I hitched a ride back to 'Fred' in a Hilux belonging to one of the other members, hitched up his 'Thumper' battery to mine and 'Fred' was ready for home. Made it home ok with the lights on low beam all the way, but they were getting dim by the time I rolled into the yard.
Thanks James for following me home after getting me started.

Have done a few mods including a remap from Davis Performace landys ( well worth the money )

Here's my Defender in Laura after a muddy run over the PDR down from a very wet Cape York. The worst road conditions I've ever experienced. Passed a few trailers with wheels ripped off, but missed the bogged semis up the road near Coen.

Hi Dervish it looks like you had some fun in the mud, I love it as long as I don't have to get out and walk in it. What tires a re you using?in the photo they look good diameter but not too wide.
I have a roof rack, mostly home made, and it's proved durable enough on my desert and mountain trips But I'm worried about all the horror stories i hear about the corrugated road to the cape wrecking the roof racks. What was your experience?
Re mud all over the side of the car, when I put on the wider tyres, it annoyed me to have mud dripping of the window frames and the gutters, getting into the fuel filler spot etc. So I made these small aluminium "mudgaurds" and put mudflaps on the front. The little mudgaurds screw to the mudflap brackets inside, I have them front and back. Now when I drive on muddy road or the beach etc, the windows & sides of the car stays clean. Plus your arm if the window is open :) Picture is below , a crowd in the UK is making them out of plastic i think for 100 quid. The photo attached is cut from a bigger photo and is not so good but you get the idea.

Hi Dervish, the steel wheels with the mud tyres on.
Are they from a defender 130? I think so,
Are they tubeless? I don't think so.
And I think they are a little bit wider than a normal defender 110 wheel ?
The reason is I like them and would like get a set, rather than disco wheels what do yo think? thanks . Currently my mud tyres are on a set of old range rover rims. thanks

11th June 2014, 03:23 PM
So much attention for my rather standard setup :) Simmo, I'm running Land Rover ANR4583 rims which are similar to the 130 rims except they have a safety bead. These are the true "Wolf" rim, rated to 2200kg each. I galvanised mine as I really hate rust. The tyres are BFG MTs; 235/85r16, tubeless. I really like these tyres (size and tread pattern) on the Defender, I'd say a perfect match.
This isn't my first trip to the Cape, and yes, it is gruelling wet or dry. If you have confidence in your handiwork though, I think your rack should be fine. I was travelling with a Hilux with a very shoddy roof basket and it held on with only one lot of retightening.
Photodude, the offset on the Wolfs is +20.6, close to what you have. The 235s should give you full travel without scraping with your wheels, depending on how wide they are (Wolfs are 6.5"). My truck is lifted 2", but this setup will work without a lift just as well.

I couldn't say; I've never run them. I think it'd be close if it did scrape. Probably nothing to worry about for such a rare occurrence as full articulation - if you get there you'll be at crawling pace.

Hi dervish, I agree I like 235/85, my ATs and MTs are that size they fit well under the guards and don't rub under any situation. I'm using tubeless rims, but they are the aftermarket ones. I'm not sure of the offset. The wolf rims are excellent, and look good, but I think they are pricey from what i heard on the forum. I think the closest thing to them would be a set of disco 1 rims, they seem to be a popular modification. I have the same as you, I have the 2" lift.

Was cheap to buy ($100 Ebay), I like gadgets, I like knowing as much about the engine as I can such as coolant temp normally, turbo and rail pressures, we get ice here so I think the intake temp is helpful, wanted to see 0-100km time and does that too, records trip distance, look up faults, clear faults, and a bit of fun. Easy install.

Will do actual distance as interfaces with GPS (slip distance?). Very easy to read during the day...I'm using a Samsung S4 changing to an S5 this week which will be imperceptibly better - I took the photo at night because I have a disorder (in addition to dial disorder) for gadgets and lights in the truck cab... in Play store (is on Apple too I think) buy the Torque Pro app ($6.50).

Hi folks, as an occasional lurker I would like to out-myself. I'm driving a 2012 110 SE in the strange bronze colour - as a self-confessed introvert this car/colour combo generates rather too many conversations. I have added a safari snorkel, Hannibal roofrack (shorter length to maintain some sunroof function), on-board air and electric brakes/Andersen plug.
The next "refinements" for a perfect car include Exbox, rear worklights and Rijidij front bar and wheel carrier and a winch. Then we'll look at a lift, some angrier wheels and a stunning lightbar. The back of the Defender remains full of seats (kids ...) so we're stuck towing a trailer rather than drawers, fridges and roof-tent.
Here's a picture of the truck in action on Straddie.

Wollondilly river near Mitttagong south of Sydney, just off caves road. The picture only shows about half the length of the crossing, maybe less. Total crossing length is about 50m.
I am pretty sure it is on private property though, we were there for a driver training day courtesy of the dealer.
It is the bottom of the wide section of the river in this map view, travelling east to west: https://www.google.com/maps/@-34.3704419,150.1028112,115m/data=!3m1!1e3

We've recently added a UHF, LED bar (amazing light throw), heavier duty suspension and drive shaft modifications, addition of an ARB awning and a crab bar added for a child seat restraint for our 4 month old. Only thing remaining is some modifications for the rear cabin for camping gear, fridges, storage drawers etc.

Apparently when the A frame and fire wall is busted, the whole thing gets pulled apart.

Mate, I hope you have much better luck with the new one and I hope insurance paid the out on the other so you don't have to dive too deeply into the wallet to get the new one as you want it.
thanks mate.. I must admit.. it stings a little. although the pay out process was efficient, I would pay more attention next time to the payout figure itself as getting the new truck is costing me a bit more. on the bright side, I have had the 130hcpu itch for a while.
not long to go. Melbourne mid next week, then a fun drive back to Canberra........via the coast maybe!

Hi there,
Its been quite a few years in the making but ive finally bought a defender. Its a 95 300tdi with 320000 kms. Drives great but needs a bit of work. I have no doubt it will owe me an arm and a leg or 2 when its finished but it will last me forever and ill be very happy.
Ive tried attaching a pic so I hope it works.

Playing around in the Simpson Desert. I decided to take a route a little to the left of the normal track. Not a good idea in the long wheel base. As i got a little bit beached. My front left was off the ground. Both my back tyres had dug in. And all of my belly had sand filling up around it.
The first photo shows how bad i was stuck but doesn't give justice to just how steep the hill was. The second shot is of one of the boys coming up to help dig me out. And the 3rd is looking along the car. Sand is everywhere. So much to move before i could be pulled backwards. Also look at the top left a sand flag from the car a few meters in front and on the other side of the drop down.
What i learnt was not to play when with mates in other makes of cars. They will pick on the Landy for anything. So i shouldn't give them an easy option

Michael, you can't put a price on a happiness! And much happiness you're Defender will bring :)
I had wanted one for the last 15 plus years when I first had a close up look over an early series cab chassis with a Holden 202 engine change over. I recently lashed out and bought an '09 Puma 110. Mine has lower kms than your new beauty but regardless I've still spent some money on customising it and getting a few slight issues resolved. All second hand cars will require money to be spent on them at some point.
Enjoy the experience.

Hey there Tikka,
Would you mind explaining the process and materials used for painting those wheels?
I looked at painting mine black but have heard mixed reviews and suggestions from people, including sandblasting them first and another was to use a hammer tone finish to help 'blend in and hide' future imperfections and nicks.

Hi...I gave each rim a wash, then liberal degreaser and wiping, then a light sand with 240grit, then 2 coats of etching primer, 2 coats of Terrafirma alloy paint, and 2 coats of Terrafirma lacquer. It will still chip with a good knock and I think that is unavoidable...it looks bloody good though so was worth the effort.

If done by someone who actually knows how to do them properly, wheel weights on alloys SHOULD be the self adhesive variety that stick on the inside, NOT the clip on ones which should only be used on steel rims.
Unfortunately, most tyre place workers are just lazy.
Though they should also do it at your request....:wasntme:

Where did you get your zu wheels?
Landybitz hooked me up. Has an ebay store and also a member here i see. I researched pretty hard on rims and had some dealer cash to spend due to wrong wheels delivered with the vehicle. These are the lightest and strongest rims you can get for the defender. They clean easy and there are heaps of them on defenders including comp cars in the UK so they should do everything i need and more.
-11mm offset on the wider 265 tyre has the inside edge of the tyre about 7mm further outboard than the standard so they wont rub on the insides and even help turning circle with some adjustment on the stops. Outer stance is a full 37mm wider each side but the still run inside the guards so they dont spray the truck sides.
Each rim weights 10.4kg and can take 1400kg. Bit of stuff on this forum on ZU wheels, alloys v steelies etc. So they can go on a 130 no probs.

PM me if you want any more details. Im a defender / landy newbie but reading the shyte of of this website and others to get up to speed.

My 265/75R16's are on 16x8 rims with "0" offset. The chunky sidewalls of the M/T's are very close to inline with the outer rim. I get mud chucked up the sides, but that's part of the fun of getting off road, and is nothing a good wash can't fix.
If anything, it helps to get you in the good habit of cleaning the truck early after a day of fun out on the tracks.
Enjoy it :D

Thanks for the feedback gents.
I will be adding home made rock sliders / tree skids full length including the rear quarter panels once i get back home. That should take care of 'most' of the mud slinging. We fold them up out of plate capped on the ends and they fit snug to the wheel flares both ends. Im also looking to see if its worth fitting a proper drain and tap and have them as small water tanks for the dogs or boot wash/kiddy foot wash for sandy trips.
Will send photos of what we do when i can. But im sure you will be seeing photos of my first mud outing proving you all right, with or without the 'skirts'

Hey Paul,
James looks awesome with the fatties in the mud :D
I took a couple of our friends up Mt Coree a few weeks back and the clouds closed in before we reached the summit. The view disappeared before they got to enjoy it, and it stayed that way :(
I just said we'll do it again sometime soon.
Speaking of the rear wheel carrier, I've got the DIY rear floor installed now over the top of the spare wheel. Just have to finish it off (at the moment it's just raw ply).
Will post some pics when complete.
Cheers,
Nige

In what way do you reckon the originals drove better?

its probably mostly in the mind lol but with the 33's they definitely feel heavier. And with the treads being massive the drag seems way more too. I'll get a better feel for them over time. :o I like them a lot really. I just think its a bit more lively on the standards. or atleast ones that arent 12.5 lol
