I got the damage report from Wyatt's the other day and the gearbox is "Toast" as well as the transfer case cable
    That was the Bad news.
The Good news is that they have a good used gearbox available to affect the repairs to the D2a

    The work that is being done is ;

Fit a new front tail shaft.
Fit a new "Doughnut" to the rear tailshaft.
    Supply and replace the gearbox.
Fit a new transfer case cable.

All up the cost quoted was about $4,000, Which seems quite reasonable for the work that is being done especially when you factor in the High quality workmanship you get when you drop your land rover of at Wyatt's

There is also about a fist sized hole in the floor under the drivers seat because the drive shaft smashed into it when it decided to commit "harakiri" that I will have to patch up otherwise the wading ability of the D2a will be severely compromised .

I briefly contemplated getting a defender or series land rover to replace the injured D2a But as I already have a very reliable/capable albeit uncomfortable 4WD ute with the 79 Series I decided to once again bite the bullet and get the D2a back on the road/track.
Oh the Joys of 4WD ownership

Sorry to hear that , maybe they should sharpen their pencil a bit considering the shaft uni's give plenty of warning before getting to the point of letting go , unless a couple of services were missed

The part on the front drive shaft that gave way didn't have a grease nipple So it wasn't a servicing issue because there was NO way that it could have been serviced.
Anyway I do all my own services except for the auto service So there is absolutely NO way that Wyatt's can be at fault for this SNAFU.
The front drive shaft failures on the D1 and the D2 is a quite common occurrence simply because of the way it was designed by JLR who in their wisdom decided that there was no need to make the driveshaft greaseable.
The new shaft that I am getting fitted WILL be greaseable because it is designed correctly and NOT by JLR

Have you moved your air con rubber pipes? They drip on to the uni and dry them out prematurely. Another great landrover design What happened to your Discovery 2 today?

I won't have to now as I will simply pump some new grease into the Uni's on a regular basis

By servicing , I mean it should be picked up on a service , they start off by the cups becoming shiny , then progress to a chirping at low speed , then vibration.

A service carried out by a decent mechanic is a lot more involved than someone checking / changing oils and filters. No offence intended.

Maybe get whyatts to do an inspection every 2nd service if you want to do your own oils and filters
