    SLS for the win, almost

I've loaded up the car for the Adelaide Hills camping trip. I noticed that the rear is a low what with all the weight. Luckily I have SLS. Well the air bags. I quick pump and the car looks level again.

One day, I will install the compressor.
One day I will install the SLS loom.
One day I will install the ride height sensors.
One day I will Nanocom the SLS on.
One day, but not today, the rest of Jan is not looking too good either. But
    One day.

    Blown Turbo

Well, on the way to Pirie yesterday morning loaded with tools, was having a bit of fun fanging it on the old pirie-broughten gravel road when I noticed engine not feeling right, then white smoke followed by black billowing clouds, pulled up and engine was idling ok but a terrible screeching and metalic clanking under the bonnet.

Had a squiz and the turbo was the wailing culprit, no fluids or fuel leaks so turned it off ( I had popped the bonnet for a very quick squiz as so much smoke was under the car I wanted to check for fire to pull tools out b4 it went up)

So rang RAA and they kindly trayed me into town and dropped me and vehicle off at the address I was supposed to do the work (I was only 5k south).

After a few more calls and an inconvenient ( or convenient for me ?) breakdown by a very pricey audi suv that had to go back to adelaide for monday workshop, I got trailered home that same arvo while the audi got prime spot on the truck.

So this morning I ordered this Turbocharger Chra for Land Rover Discovery 1999-2004 MK II [1998-2004] MF000040 | eBay

I had planned on going to u-pull-it and grabbing a used turbo but it would be a 90k round trip from my place and back and of course taking my chances with its condition.

So went looking online and ebay won.

Way way down the track I am planning on vnt upgrade so don't want to spend too much just get it running asap.

Has anyone ever re cored with a cheapy and if so what was/is your experience ?

I would highly highly advise against a cheap one as they fail and can cause extreme amount of damage, if you were to buy a hybrid core from turbo core uk they are $500 delivered and I have installed about 18 of them now and never had a issues can handle more boost than standard and spool a little early

as for vnt I’d stay away from s208 I had the wastegate snapped on it and left me stranded and nothing but issues getting it setup correctly

For once I do have a little money for a better core and have been looking at those u mentioned as I knew my turbo was a bit sloppy, but I still have a block with bad bores and a slight water loss issue to deal with so this cheapie core should get me through a few months until i can pull the motor for a light going over.

My D2 is a bit rough and had some neglectful previous owners so with the price of D3s coming down as they age I may look in that direction next year and just nurse the D2 along for now.

What is your setup recommendation for a Td5 Auto that is used for towing (ie needs low EGTs)?
    Cheers

My 208's been going well WGM managing it at 25PSI, no trick box's, just 3.5bar MAP + MAF extend and keeping WGM. If you keep the WGM you need to tweak a few settings as it makes boost too quickly and will cause fuel cut which make the drive a bit meh, I noticed it even more after installing a lower stall T/C.

    Need to tweak,
    tb_engine_speed_enbl
    tb_engine_speed_disbl

and lower the management for lower RPM values.

I actually have it on a stock driver demand fuel map at the moment, but just increased the smoke/torque limiters and turbo overspeed adjustments using the tb_spd_const and feel it drives really good. Best fuel economy and low EGT's. Not as fun as some extra fuel but to get that TD5 roar.

yeah I had all the maps you can have for that and it ok wasn’t nothing special just died at the top end, went to a garret fixed geometry and can run double the boost and half the cost

I am hoping mine will die so I can have an excuse for another turbo to play with at least when that happens you have hopefully figured out what the best turbo is, and I can just buy once and set and forget but I do enjoy the low-down power delivery of the VGT.

Mine is stock fuel map and I have pushed the smoke/torque limits way up also, so they are basically ineffective. stock turbo and MAP so can't do much more anyway, deleted the MAF in the tune as I am eu2 and mine is fubar and I have no egr setup, using waste gate module as designed and changed settings in fuel map to suit, plenty of info on discoTd5 on how to do everything, and all good.

I have upped the boost limiter to 21psi and tightened the wastegate adjuster a bit and it gets there nicely, no overboost cut outs etc.

I use tunerpro and the xdf files from discotd5 and there is more than enough info on that website to do your own tunes.

And will keep insisting that the first performance mod is the lower stall V8 converter. No need for a tune to push it either.

MSB so use a chip programmer instead of nanocom.

Just waiting for the replacement core now so I can get the car on the road and report back.

And plenty of oil feeding the turbo so my guess is the shaft snapped from too much play.

VNT's don't have a wastegate, the actuator alters a nozzle ring, the S208 is VSR balanced, flow tested and set at Turbo technics so nothing to set up really, only in the mapping.

Did you buy it 2nd hand?

I've fitted a few over the years, the only time I had one give any trouble, Ryan at T.T. sent a new one with fitting kit straight away, so no complaints here.

I have also been running them in both my own Auto and Manual D2's for years without any dramas.

Double the boost?, mine are around 26 PSI.... 52 PSI is a whole lot of wasted heat, not to mention the HP losses in just driving the turbine.
